Watch this and tell me what a woman can accomplish in Nigeria :http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-134234:  ON NOVEMBER/ 3/ 2008, A young lady (Uzoma Okere) driving home from work didn't move her vehicle out of the way of a millitary convoy on time, resulting severe beatings by armed Nigerian Navy men. The convoy consisted of the animal,Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade's personal Navy saloon car and his pilot truck, consisting of 6 armed thughs and baby gorillas as bodyguards.

Miss/Mrs, if you are out there, the God i serve will visit each an everyone that laid a finger on you, especially that animal  Harry Arogundade, this is injustice and inhumanity. Gorrillas and disgusting animals should be in cages not on street.

PS,am very angry!! angry angry cry cry smiley smiley

Re: Is Nigeria Condusive And Good For Women? by iice(f): 5:36pm On Nov 09, 2008
It's a patriarchal society, what do you expect?

As for the convoy thing, isn't it 'well' known to stay out of the military's way?

Yes it's sad, bad and they can be cads but you do what you must and can to avoid things like this if it is within your power.

What has being beaten by Naval men got to do with women achievment in Naija??

Men also get the same treatment and evenworsein Naija. Infact, I can bet that if it was a guy involved, he would most likely have been shot. That woman got it bad, but I've seen and experienced worse.

Re: Is Nigeria Condusive And Good For Women? by tpia: 11:11pm On Nov 13, 2008
Is it now that the OP is asking if Nigeria is conducive and good for women?

I wonder where he or she has been all their life, when women have been the burden bearers in the country? You've never seen a Nigerian woman carry load on her head, lead three or four young children by the hand, and carry another little one on her back, while going to the farm or market? You've never seen a woman struggle and help her husband make it, only to be dumped for a younger competitor as soon as the man gets rich?

And you've never heard the song "Sweet Mother?"

Sweet mother, i no go forget you, for the suffer wey you suffer am for me oh
If i no chop, my mother no go chop
If i no sleep, the mother no go sleep

she no dey tire ah,

in fact, what's the meaning of this daft thread?

@poster
like someone commented already is a patriachal society SAME AS LITERALLY ALL AFRICAN COUNTRIES,INCLUDING SOME ASIAN COUNTRIES however branding the uzoma okere incident a result of sexism is an unreasonable assertion and a slap in the face of the many killed and maimed by high handness and brutality of nigerian police,navy ,army e.t.c

how r bout the guy murdered on the foot ball field by the police?
or the guy murdered in cold blood right in his car?
the group of ibo boys killed?

are they female??

conservative societies aren't conducive for women.
Re: Is Nigeria Condusive And Good For Women? by lucabrasi(m): 1:31pm On Nov 14, 2008
@tpia
if the focus is on the woman then he/she has chosen a poor test case to illustrate his/her point as brutality from the nigerian forces is a unisex thing not specifit to females just because of one incident affecting women against hundreds if not thousands unreported against men,children e.t.c
@poster
ill have though domestic violence,treatment of widows,treatment of women in divorce e.t.c would have been a more appropriate example to use in your topic to get things better understood and on point

Is that meant in the same way as the British society is a matriachal society in which men have no rights where women are concerned?

Re: Is Nigeria Condusive And Good For Women? by iice(f): 2:22pm On Nov 14, 2008
I didn't mean it in that way tongue
Naija society caters more to the men. The world revolves around the man. In the home, with our parents, at work, how men approach women. Not saying that women don't have their rights, just not equal to that of men.
The british have a more fair balanced society with regards to individuals

You will need to ask more men about that in UK, and dont forget to visit the site of fathers for justice while you're at it.
You need to poll British men to know if they feel the society is faily balanced.
Being fairer to women than most other countries is different in meaning from a fair balance
Re: Is Nigeria Condusive And Good For Women? by lucabrasi(m): 2:40pm On Nov 14, 2008
EXACTLY!!men are having it no fairer in uk/us than men are in nigeria, so why the emphasis on nigeria there are various cases of domestic violence in the uk against the man but nobody highlights it,rather the man suffers the double burden of being labelled a coward and suffering in silence so it hardly gets reported and when it does the case seldom goes anywhere

same as women using children as a tool to get back at a partner or ex husband even though their issues has nothing to do with the child/children but isnt highlighted because the politicians are scared f the backlash from women's groups and protecting their precious votes from that particular demographic rather than telling the truth and striking the right balance.
as unfair as the situation is in nigeria women are generally seen as the second in the chain of hierachy in contrast to the united kingdom,us e.t.c where women come first,children come second,the dog comes third then the man makes up the rear

It depends tho,

IMO, in terms of family related stuffz. . . . men often take up d rear. Talk of top positions e.g politicians etc majority are men because the glass-ceiling effect still exsists.

I am in no way surprised by this. We're talking about a country that takes pride in holding women back. What do you expect? We're talking about a society that will bend over backwards for men while walking on the backs of their women. This doesn't shock at all.

This is nonsense. Not only is it lazy to generalize, the facts on the ground do not bear you out.

Generalizing is lazy. Most naija men would chuckle bitterly if someone told them society was "bending over backwards" for them. And there are tons of women at the top in every sphere of Nigerian life. Is there a glass ceiling? Sure. But there are also Naija women that are home-wrecking gold-diggers. I could lazily generalize that to all Nigerian women too.

"walking on the backs of their women" is nonsense, and you know it. If we were talking about Saudi, "pride in holding women back" might even start to make sense.

Lmao, fine call it what you like. Call it "lazy", call it "nonsense", if those words suite you then good for you. Nigerian culture tends to cater more to men than women. Let's not act as though there isn't a huge double standard within our culture and many other parts of African culture. As for the "home-wrecking gold-diggers", last time I checked, it takes two to tango. I'm sure those men involved with these supposed "home-wrecking gold-diggers" knew what they were doing when they decided to step outside of their marriages. I was watching a Youtube video recently about a West African girl who was talking about an argument she had with an old friend of hers. This friend of her's said to her "Behind every married man there is a woman and behind her is his wife", the guy who made the comment argued and used it as a means of justification a man's infidelity and said that women should just deal with it and accept things for what they are and that that was just how African society was, mind you, there were guys who agreed with this guys and encouraged what he was saying. Now if a woman were to take on the same idiotic notions of that fool, then the interpretation and reaction of such a comment would be would totally different. I'm am in no way saying that the life of a Nigerian man is easy. I know it its not. The life of any Black man is never easy. I have a father and I take note of how hard he works to attain everything his has accomplished in life but I'm not gonna sit her and act as though there aren't issues here. Just because we [Nigerian women] may not be as restricted as women in Saudi Arabia doesn't mean that we aren't restricted at all. As for you asking if there were a ceiling, yes there is a ceiling. You may not see it but it is certainly there.

I didn't ask if there was a glass ceiling, I KNOW there is a glass ceiling. Its not like its a bed of roses for women, but with all these generalizations, you'd think all men are having a ball, cheating all the way and all women are just passive, submissive at the receiving end of the abuse. If you'd posted the above initially, there would be nothing to argue about.

I never stated that it was a bed of roses for men. Like I said before, the life of any Black man is never easy, and yes I know not all women are passive and submissive but for the most part Nigerian/African culture encourages women to be submissive and passive whether its through present day Judeo–Christian beliefs or preexisting beliefs cultural/indigenous religious beliefs. Look, I'm not tryin' to knock the Black man down but it just not an easy life as a woman. Yes, some men stupidly cater to some idiotic demands of some woman but for the most its just not easy.
