This has been trending online since yesterday: Most beautiful girl in Unilag rewarded with a brand new car while the most brilliant debater gets a laptop.
This has steered a very important argument as to which is more profitable: Beauty or Brains. Also I would add Connections or Merit (especially in Naija). We should not be too surprised. The profit-minded organizers were definitely gonna get more publicity and additionally more income from a beauty pageant than a rigorous debate session with probably only nerds and geeks in attendance. So the reason for huge difference in prizes. Some months back, there was also similar comparison between Cowbell mathematics competition and our various reality shows.

Nowadays our children are catching up quickly and most don't wanna follow their parents' stringent life schedules with even fewer perks than a music star or actress. Celebrities have the money, fame, connections etc. This is why some kids probably don't study hard to pass their SSCE or other related exams. They just hope and wish for quick stardom.

This situation is really pathetic and in a corruption-ridden nation such as Nigeria, it will definitely stunt growth or development in the years to come. Especially when no one will wanna work in industries or offices but sing, act or be J.J Okocha. If only we can place more emphasis on work than laurels, then citizens would desire and work with the aim of making their country better and not requisite of "what's in it for me." When government pay proper attention to all sectors of the society and also use our resources to develop the nation (power and roads most importantly) and not enrich their pockets and families only, when politics is a call to serve and not an initiation into dubious wealth. Only then can such incidents as this not draw so much furore.

This is a wake up call to society. Just like the Peak milk advert, it begins with you, especially the present and upcoming generations, we the future husbands, wives, fathers and mothers. Don't lament only, make sure your kids are adequately trained now or then to appreciate values over transient glory.

I think brains coz some ladies are just too perfect until you hear them talk.
