Re: Do Nigerian Navy Have Battleship? by Nobody: 7:13pm On Oct 10, 2014 |
overhypedsteve: Strictly speaking, no country actually uses battleships any longer, as they've been decommissioned since the 1970s. They are a WW2 relic. Battleships were susceptible to easy attack by mines and fast craft, and have been replaced by smaller, faster, more versatile vessels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship |

naptu2: Battle Ship Usually one of the most important ship in the fleet of most navies (at least before WW2). they are usually heavy armored which makes them a little bit slower than a cruiser. They carry heavy and long range gun batteries and they are needed to maintain command of the sea for most nations. Countries with sophisticated military do not depend on it too much like before because there are aircraft carriers. but a battle ship might still escort a carrier (most times with a submarine and a destroyer to have a secure perimeter.) Air craft Carrier They are large ships that carry aircraft and troops which enables powerful countries to project power and allow rapid deployments to any front line. they Carry aircraft, rescue helicopters, and troops. Because of their massive size, they are usually sitting ducks for enemy aircraft. to combat this , the usually have advance radars to detect enemy movement before they get close and most times, they are usually escorted by battle ships , destroyers and Submarines. Their aircraft can be deployed quickly too to combat any threats. the aircraft on a carrier are different from their counterparts on the ground a little bit. some of them can have folded wings which give more room for additional aircraft. There are 4 major variants of a carrier. the CATOBAR (preferred by NATO) STOBAR (preferred by Russia) (thou the new UK carrier is STOBAR i think!) and there is STOVL (vertical take off and landing Used by the British and the US marines mostly) the 4th is for helicopters. The model always depends on the type of aircraft it is designed to carry the CATOBAR is preferred by the US because most of their planes have to accelerate a lot before they can fly so the catapult gives the plane a very hard push using compressed air. The STOBAR is used by the Russians because most of their planes have fixed wings and the STOVL is used by the British because they use it to deploy harrier jet that takes off vertically and when the US marines started using harriers too, they kind of prefer the STOVL carrier and they insisted of getting a F35 that can take off vertically like a harrier. (the marines F35 is the F-35B) Amphibious Assault Ship They are the types of ship that carries troops using Landing crafts usually for a beach operations. they have a flight deck too but most times can only deploy helicopters or STOVL types of jets (harriers and the US marine F35? maybe) Amphibious Landing Ship interchangeable with Amphibious Assault Ship or Amphibious warfare Ship almost the same thing Landing Ship Tank They carry heavier cargo and unlike Amphibious Assault Ship, they reach the shore before deploying. useful for transporting APCs that are not amphibious, some tanks, artillery or other heavy arms. Cruiser smaller than a battleship and are usually use for scouting and they carry short range missiles too. Their job exactly is very confusing and i cant really say much about this one. They can carry out independent missions but most destroyers do their jobs now and only few countries even have a cruiser.(i might be wrong) Destroyer They are usually used for escorts and are good for short range sea combat and it can be a used effectively against a torpedo boat. they do not carry long range gun batteries like battle ships Frigate They can look like a destroyer or a cruiser. can be pretty confusing and they do escort work (usually escorting merchant ships). other than that, i am not really sure. Corvette a nice car just another ship (don't know the purpose) Patrol Boat small ships usually carry is a machine/rail guns. they are fast and usually used for sea patrols on shallow waters (coast guards). for anti smuggling operations etc! |

Good, some have answered my questions, so back to my first question, why should the Nigerian Navy have a battleship in this day and age? This isn't 1894, neither is it 1914, we are in 2014! |
Re: Do Nigerian Navy Have Battleship? by GuyFawkes: 1:28am On Oct 11, 2014 |
NNS Aradu was acquired under Shagari's tenure and its the Nigerian Navy's flagship albeit an outdated one. All those pics are full of frigates,WW2 destroyers and tugboats, maybe we can boast of something modern when the chinese deliver the stealth ships they are building for the NN. Battleships are outdated and don't fit into modern warfare but modern and sophisticated destroyers are still the real deal. The era of the battleship ended when the Japanese sunk the HMS prince of wales and HMS repulse in december 1941, it also ended the british navys dominion on the seas. |
Re: Do Nigerian Navy Have Battleship? by naptu2: 2:03am On Oct 11, 2014 |
The big issue has been maintenance (particularly during the military era) and the two examples that best illustrate this fact are NNS Aradu and NNS Ambe. Ships can serve for a long time. The US used World War 2 era battleships up into the 1990s. The key thing is that you maintain them properly. NNS Aradu is a Meko 360 class frigate (probably the first one ever built). This means that its parts are perfectly interchangeable, therefore it should not have to be alongshore for a long time, but it was not maintained properly and so it spent almost 12 years alongshore. It has run aground several times because of bad seamanship. Thankfully it has been better treated since 1999 than it was during the military era. I do not think that we would have been successful in Liberia without NNS Ambe and her twin sister NNS Ofiom (they were used to transport troops, armoured cars, tanks, etc from Ecomog countries to Liberia and Sierra Leone and their ro-ro capabilities ensured that we could land the equipment despite hostile fire from shore). Yet we have treated both ships badly. NNS Ofiom is practically dead. The roro ramp of NNS Ambe has been welded shut. What use is a Landing Ship Tank without its ramp? It has suffered fires and a naval training exercise had to be abandoned in 2004 because the Ambe did not arrive shore when it was supposed to (it broke down). NNS Obuma suffered similar fate when it was still alive and that's what made the government decide to replace it with NNS Aradu. I reckon that it could have served us for 10 to 15 more years. These ships are not really that old, but they have not been maintained properly (credit to Admiral Adekeye for what he did with NNS Andoni, NNS Aradu and what he planned to do with NNS Obuma) |

NgeneUkwenu: Ewww ngene what is ur problem..if ur really a female as stated ur a disgrace..from a political attack dog to an outdated naval expert. Op almost all posted vessels are working.NNs ARADU is undergoing major maintenance in belarus via cyprus.NNS obuma seems to have been decommisioned alongside NNS OHIE We have new ships in NNs Centenary An unnamed turkish vessel still be refitted as a missle ship. An unammed chinese ship undergoing same procedure. Patrol crafts mostly Littorals bought earlier this year.yet to be inducted. And more if u a gud.researcher and close to the navy u will appreciate nigeria especially as this BH crisis seemed to have opened their eyes |
