Alhaji shined in the 2nd leg especially. He was also a member of the 2013 U-20 Flying Eagles @ the AYC. Who says we no get players abeg.... #smiles All these young starlets are beginning to grow and mature. And more super talents are still coming through. The First Super Golden Generation of Nigerian football covered the period of 1990-2000 "primarily" (the last decade of the 20th century). Now, another Super Golden Generation beckons the more. According to Owngoalnigeria.com, Siasia has extended invitation to Obinna Nwobodo for the U-23 Dream Team's Olympic preparations. Also, I just spotted another Nigerian "Right back" over the weekend. His name is "Tyrone Ebuehi", a 20-yr old who stars for Ado Den Haag in the Dutch Eredivisie. Ado den Haag once had Kenneth Omeruo on loan with them. And Omeruo left big positive marks at the club. Nigeria on the rise....... #smiles 3 Likes |

SIASIA DROP TWO FROM U-23 CAMP HAND CALL UP TO ENUGU RANGERS LAD The technical crew of the U-23 National Team, Dream Team, has dropped both Chukwuebuka Iroha and Oluwaseun Olulayo for not measuring up to the standard expected of them in camp since resumption of training programme. The crew said it was disappointed with the level of fitness displayed by the duo who were part of the team that triumphed at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal in December 2015, and warned that no player is guaranteed automatic shirt to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In a related development, Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Samson Siasia has directed that three players, namely Segun Oduduwa, Usman Mohammed and Stanley Dimgba should no longer report to the Super Eagles camp, as punishment for reporting late to the Dream Team camp without permission. Siasia stated that the affected players are no longer part of his plans for the Egypt game, so should concentrate on the friendly against Brazil with the Dream Team. In a bid to beef up the Dream Team, the technical crew has extended an invitation to Rangers of Enugu player Obinna Nwobodo, who is expected to report to camp immediately with the other Rangers players on Monday. http://owngoalnigeria.com/2016/03/07/siasia-drop-two-from-u-23-camp-hand-call-up-to-enugu-rangers-lad/ 2 Likes |

WENGER CONFIRMS IWOBI IS IN SQUAD TO FACE HULL CITY IN FA CUP REPLAY Super Eagles teen forward Alex Iwobi will be in Arsenal’s squad for tomorrow’s FA Cup replay match against Hull City. The first leg ended 0-0 with Iwobi starring for the gunners but the 19 year old has found games hard to come by following the return of top first team players from injury. However after missing out on the last two match day squads Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed he is in contention for a spot in tomorrow’s game. While reacting to the enforced absence of midfielder Francis Coquelin who was sent off against Tottenham Hotspurs in their English Premier League clash over the weekend, Wenger revealed it has opened the chance for Iwobi to come into the squad. “We have lost Coquelin due to his bad tackle, we need to see how they recover and Alex Iwobi will now be added to the squad for tomorrow’s trip” Wenger confirmed at his pre match conference. Iwobi has featured more in the FA Cup than in the League or the UEFA champions League but is still waiting for his first goal in competitive game for the senior team of Arsenal. http://owngoalnigeria.com/2016/03/07/wenger-confirms-iwobi-is-in-squad-to-face-hull-city-in-fa-cup-replay/ 2 Likes |

Man City Fans Prefer Iheanacho To Bony By Johnny Edward: Despite Manchester City 4-0 thumping of Aston Villa at the Ethiad stadium to make up ground at the top, Blues fans have voiced their disgust over the choice of Wilfred Bony ahead of Kelechi Iheanacho. Bony copped some flak from City fans online after failing to impress, missing a couple of sitters and struggling to get hold of the ball in the 62 minutes he played before being replaced by Raheem Sterling. A City fan, Sparkinbluefire, wrote on Twitter : “There was one man who had failure written all over him ‘WB’. Why he started in place of Iheanacho raises some serious concerns over team selection even when City are not exactly cruising in the league.” Another fan IanLovegrove added: “Playing two up front is a plus but Bony ahead of Kelechi is ridiculous. Same old lack of imagination from Manuel Pellegrini, as always!” Emmett also thinks the Ivorian doesn’t deserve a place in the team ahead of the Nigerian youngster. He wrote: “Bony does nothing to deserve his spot in this team over Iheanacho. As we’ve all seen, Kelechi is miles better for us that Bony.” Iheanacho has scored nine goals in 25 appearances in his debut season for Manchester City. www.completesportsnigeria.com/man-city-fans-prefer-iheanacho-bony/ |

Amuneke: Nigeria can repeat 1996 heroics When the Olympic Men's Football Tournament kicks off later this year in Rio de Janeiro, Nigeria's football mad supporters will be anxious for their side to emulate the memorable success of the original Nigerian 'Dream Team'. It was 20 years ago this summer that a renowned Nigerian team stunned Argentina 3-2 in the 1996 final in front of almost 90,000 people near Atlanta to become the first African football nation to win Olympic gold. The winning goal was scored by Emmanuel Amuneke, who came on in the 72nd minute. It was a life-changing moment for the striker, who at the time was contracted to Sporting Lisbon. “Before going to the Olympics, there was an agreement with Barcelona, but I was struggling with injury, so there were doubts about my ability,” Amuneke recalled in an interview with FIFA.com. "But after the Olympics, Barcelona picked up their interest again, and I eventually moved there. The impact I made in Atlanta allowed people to see that this guy is a good player and you can count on him." Making golden memories Although they had made waves at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which was also in the USA, little was expected of the west Africans, who were drawn into a tough group in the 16-team tournament, with favourites Brazil among their opponents. Victories against Japan and Hungary were enough to send the team into the knockout rounds despite a 1-0 defeat to A Selecao. In the quarter-final, the Nigerians impressively defeated Mexico 2-0 with goals from Jay-Jay Okocha and Celestine Babayaro to set up a rematch with mighty Brazil in the last four. It was a game that will live long in the memory. With 12 minutes remaining, Brazil were leading 3-1 and inching closer to a first gold medal that today is still missing from their impressive haul of football titles. Victor Ikpeba pulled one back in the 78th minute before Nwankwo Kanu scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser. Four minutes into extra time the lanky striker made it three goals in a quarter-hour with a golden goal. “Going into the tournament we had the self-belief that if we applied ourselves well we could do something great for ourselves and the country," said Amuneke. "Don’t forget we had some players who featured for the senior national team at the 1994 World Cup. But beating Brazil boosted our confidence because it was a dramatic match. We were almost out, but we fought and pulled it off.” Amuneke, who had already earned his place in Nigerian footballing folklore by scoring both goals in the Super Eagles' 2-1 victory against Zambia in the 1994 CAF Africa Cup of Nations final, was benched for the gold medal match despite having started in all games leading up to the final. However, he was to make a huge impact, entering the contest in the latter stages and scoring another dramatic last-minute winner. “Two days before the final, our coach, Jo Bonfrere, told me that some people were complaining that I was not playing at my best for the team. But in the match, he told me to stay warmed up and, as fate would have it, I scored the winning goal. So I was happy that when I came on, I contributed my own part to the team.” Expectations and differences Despite a career limited by injuries, Amuneke has remained a leader in Nigerian football and currently coaches the country's U-17 side. He is confident that the Dream Team VI can do well in Rio. “We have to be realistic about our chances too. It is not going to be an easy task, but the coach (Samson Siasia) is experienced. He was in charge when Nigeria won the silver medal in 2008 and also led the team to second at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2005.” He does see some key differences between the Class of 96 and the current team. “We had a very experienced team in 1996 with a lot of talented players most of whom had also played at the FIFA World Cup in 1994. I’m not saying that the players we have now are not talented, but I think winning tournaments these days is not only about talent. It is about how the players can adapt to the changes and demands of the games along the way.” Amuneke, who says that his gold medal was stolen from his house in Lagos a few years ago, remains confident though, saying: “There is nothing to say Nigeria cannot repeat the feat of 1996. It was a beautiful thing that we laid the foundation and others have followed our path, and I think our current team can repeat that success.” http://www.cafonline.com/en-US/NewsCenter/News/NewsDetails?id=Dfn3GIesx0UGKC6F1wQYiw%3d%3d 1 Like

UGWU UZOCHUKWU SCORES HATTRICK IN ISRAEL Little known Nigerian forward Ugwu Uzochukwu grabbed the headline in Israel by scoring a treble for Hapoel Afula to help them beat Maccabi Kiryat Gan 5-2. The 19 year old took the match ball home after after scoring in the 52nd,58th and 70th minute of the seven goals thriller that saw his team move up to 7th in the Leumit League in Israel which is the second division. So far Uzochukwu has four goals from 9 league games a tally that has raise his stock in the country although a move away from Hapoel Afula according to reports gathered by owngoalnigeria.com looks unlikely at least for the next two seasons. Last season he was at top division team Ironi kiryat Shmona but failed to score a single goal in the 11 games he played for the team a record which makes his present feat more impressive. http://owngoalnigeria.com/2016/03/07/ugwu-uzochukwu-scores-hattrick-in-israel/ 1 Like |

Matthew's game seems to have gone down a bit to me. the tenacity with which he played at the u17 & at the u20 is kind of no more. To me, i will prefer a combination of etebor, azubuike and nwobodo to him. The former guys will give u power, pace and defensive & attacking option while the latter will give you creativity and vision. Usman will be better off as a back up substitute for his power and vision. My grouse with Matthew is his big man pace and one/two touch football. Is too lay back. zoboizee: Hmmm u got me really thinking here. However, reason y I would not agree Ifeanyi Mathew's game has gone down is: the U17 and U20 u mention are not as competitive as the NPFL and CHAN he has jst taken part in. Mathew is jst 18yrs old. And for him to play the way he does at the NPFL and the way he did at the CHAN shows he has so much quality for a teenager. Has Iheanacho replicated the dominance he displayed at U17 at the EPL? No, bt that does nt mean his game level has gone down. 2 Likes |

Icon4s:Well, i expected his game to have more bite by now forget dat age thingz i beg. Needs to move into space with the ball, dribble easily or fake direction. But he his just doing one/two touch football. He has played with Sardauna babes fc of kano(national league) which also produced Musa Mohammed & Alhassan Ibrahim for the U17 at the time. He also played for El-kanemi warrior of Maiduguri & presently Kano Pillars fc. So its not about age o! Its only in Nigeria a player will be 18/19/20 but would v played for close to 4 premier league side. And on iheanacho, even Manu said he is not the quickest of player in possession. His thing is just finishing, and visionary pass. He his still so " left footed", with poor ball control. |

zoboizee: Age is a big deal my brother. That is y a 23 yrs old is nt elligible to play with U17s & U20s. Generally footballers get better as they progress from teenage into d 20s. They become more efficient, build more stamina, become more tactically matured and become more exposed and experienced. All these attributes put together makes a player better with age. While most African players peak before 25-26, most European players peak as they tend towards 30. The Ifeanyi Mathew that I saw at the CHAN was an improvement from d one I saw at d U20. He is getting better in my opinion. I cannot say for sure that he will make it to Rio bt i am of d opinion dat he plays d next U20. He would also still b elligible for d 2020 Olympics. 1 Like |
