Nigeria is a secular state, meaning you should not bring your religion to school period! you can't wear a hijab to school, same way you cant wear a rosary or chaplet.
If we are not to bring religion into schools then I believe morning devotions and fellowships should also be banned. As nigerians we all have our differences both ethnic and religion the problem is our inability to objectively tolerate these diffferences and just focus on being nigerian. Its easier to discredit a fellow nigerian based on his religion or ethnicity more than his or her personal attitude. Covering of the hair isnt an option in islam, its mandatory. So once that is altered, a whole lot can spring out of it.

Why the Hijab ban is flawed

1. Muslims pay tax and have the right to attend public institutions. The Public institutions should therefore not be set up in such a way to preclude Muslims from attending. People made the rules, and people can change them.

2. Christians really have no obligation to wear white garments beyond the church and neither do the traditional worshipers have any religious clothes. So allowing Hijabs will NOT translate to chaos. I know many christian boys who wear rosaries all the time and no one has ever challenged that.

3. We should also stop the lie that there is no religion in public schools. The fact that students pray on assembly everyday and that religious studies are still taught negates this.

4. Nigeria is secular on paper only. Its the reason why religious leaders still have so much influence in our politics a la Oristejafor and Northern Emirs;the reason why we pray in every government function and even sponsor people on religious pilgrimages with taxpayers money. Countries that are truly secular don't do these.

5. By banning Hijab in public schools its easy to see how the ban may soon include all public places in the name of secularism; government offices including the House of Reps and Senate are also public spaces which should be devoid of all religious symbols.

6. Must it to get to that before we see how a Hijab ban erodes the fundamental human rights of Muslims?

7. By criminalizing Hijab in schools, what lesson are we passing across to young ones about tolerance and mutual respect?

8. Yet Hijab harms no one. Those who oppose it do so only because they don't like it.

Noooo, we are in a SECULAR country. NOT A RELIGIOUS one. Your safety and right to practice your religion is guaranteed and nothing else.

Dress code for a government school must be impartial to ALL students, if Muslims are allowed Hijabs by Jove my kids should go in their pajamas cos my religion gives them the right to.

Once again I say, Nigeria is a SECULAR state, meant to accommodate all her religions and treat them equally (nevermind the truncation of the constitution by Sharia law in the north)
I neva said Nigeria is a Religious country, mind u

Remember we r talkin abt Decency here, not jst any dress code. Hijab does not in anyway go against other people's religion.
And as per ur Pajamas, if ur religion "orders" u to use pajamas everywhere u go, as long as it does not take away ur decency ( lyk showing ur cleavages) and does not in anyway affect others academically and religious-wise, den no one says u shouldn't use it. But Remember, lyk I said earlier, Hijab is not taking anytin away 4rm other religion (in this country), so why not let it be.

And concerning "truncation" of constitution by Sharia in d North, I must say I do not undastand wat u mean by dat.
But if asking u not to consume alcohols in public places is "truncation" of d constitution, I may be forced to ask: where is our morals?

I have been following your ranting for 2 pages now, i feel I must reply you once.
1) the Saturday and Sunday holidays were not made because of Christians. Saturday is a weekend, while Sunday is the start of a new week. it is usually work free in most parts of the world, it has nothing to do with religion

2) Nigeria is a secular state, it does not endorse any particular religion. so you cannot bring your religion to a school were other religious worshipers congregate!. if the Muslims must wear hijab to school, them the seraphin av cherubs should be allowed to come without shoes, the ifa worshipers would come with red cloth and cowries around there neck. what kind of school would we have?

3) you keep going on and on about a national Christmas tree, as if we do not have a national mosque built with tax payers money too. or Nigeria does not belong to OIC against the will of Christians. so when you talk about exclusionism, you do not have a point.

4) lagos state governor is a Muslim, but one who is not an extremist. the rational part if his brain is still intact.

5) talking about exclusionism, why don't you allow people to comment of your Islamic threads on nairaland except they swear allegiance to your Allah? or do the Christians also prevent you from commenting on their threads? you Muslims just don't know how to coexist with other rational humans

From ur first point, u may nt knw bt Sat amd Sun as weekend as everything to do wit religion. We are being colonised by British which is a xtain nation comin wit their missionaries to spread xtianity, also many element of the constitution has some under tone of xtianity in it.
In countries like UAE, Qatar and saudi arabia, their weekend is Friday and Sat, wat will u say abt that?

Is wearing hijab the solution to the problem? Every school have there own policy if u can't comply then u go somewhere else. Afterall education is sinful to u, if u don't want to go allow others to not by force.

And all the noise abt Nigeria being a secular nation is jus on paper. Nigeria is a religious countries that religion play a role in their daily life.
If Nigeria is truly a secular nation, government would nt be sponsoring both religion pilgrimage, prayers would nt be offered before meeting, government would hav nothing to do wit religion. Does the president even govern or rule Nigeria wit secularity mindset?
U guys only bring d issue of secularism when it favour u.
