Abuja - Four unemployed youth have asked a
Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to compel
the Federal Government to pay them N10million general damages for failing to
provide them with jobs.
They include Patience Omezie, Kasim Suleiman,
Okojie Arabamen and Godwin Morka.
The plaintiffs, in a suit filed on their behalf by
Chief Jubril Okutekpa (SAN), told the court that
they were among Nigerian youths who were
exposed to serious harm in the botched
recruitment conducted by the Nigerian
Immigration Service, NIS.
A total of 19 applicants, including a pregnant
woman, reportedly lost their lives at various
centres across the federation where the
exercise took place.
Consequently, the plaintiffs, aside from
praying for damages against the Federal
Government, also urged the court to sack the
Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, under
whose supervision the NIS tragedy occurred.
Besides, they are praying the court to declare
that "Abba Moro is not a fit and proper person
to hold public office in Nigeria having regard
to his callous statement that Nigerians, who
died and those injured during the exercise,
were careless."
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr.
Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), the NIS and its
comptroller, Mr. David Parradang, were also
joined as defendants in the suit.
The plaintiffs also want the court to declare
that the defendants acted negligently and in
total disregard to the sanctity of lives of over
520,000 Nigerians, who were invited for
interview and or screening.
They also declared that the N1,000 collected
from the applicants was unlawful and contrary
to the public service rules and regulations as it
amounted to a breach of constitutional and
statutory duties of the defendants.
They equally want the court to direct the
defendants to account the for fee and repay
the applicants, as such payment was illegal,
unconstitutional and contrary to public policy
and good conscience.
Meanwhile, Justice Abdul Kafarati, yesterday,
okayed the suit for hearing on December 1.

Nobody wants to fight, yet these people knowing the bureaucracy and red tape that abounds are yet willing to fight. And we are content to fold our arms, make laid back comments and still say 'no progress'

Yes, I agree with them. The Minister and the others should be held accountable.

Where is the money that was obtained from applicants?

Fela sang 'suffering and smiling' and all you posters above me who made snide comments are a direct representation of what he sang. Keep suffering o.

You see people willing to stand for justice, for fairness, for equality and you are just too eager to act as crabs and bring them down.

I want to assume you're not blind, dumb or deaf. Because 3rd class and even pass graduates get jobs in oil companies and those with a 1st class still roam the streets looking for just any job. And you are talking abt qualifications.

Gosh! But people are dumb...

Exactly the reason why you must have been termed not smart enough by some of your friends.I only stated a simple logical arguement which the FG will use to win the case and nothing more.

Taking the Govt to court for immigration damages is ok but suing him because he didn't provide jobs for them?? undecided undecided... Did Jonathan promise to provide jobs for them on completion of higher institution? ?

They took a courageous move but I implore them to go out and hustle instead of waiting for a case that may take years to settle, which finally may not even be in their favour. ...

I wish them Luck anyway and will really like to know how this case ends smiley smiley

What you stated above is not in any sense logical. You think you sounded smart or logical with that above comment? So you are saying the FG will win the case by just telling the court that there are Nigerians with better qualifications than the litigants right? By your logic, if somebody embezzles public fund, he only need to tell the court that somebody has embezzled huger sum before, hence he should be set free. Man all you have said so far is deeply flawed both in logic and common sense!

Listen to your self babe...you are using a crime to compare to this,is that not wrong?why dont you make a comparison with something more related and see if the reasoning is still flawed.e.g Ten men looking to rent a single available apartment and then the home owner lets it out to one of the men then another decides to take the home owner to court, will it be wrong if the home owner tells the court that plaintiff was not qualified enough to get the apartment?

Will it also be wrong for one of the persons rejected by house owner to take the landlord to court if he feels he has not kept his own side of the agreement. The primary duties of the Government everywhere is create an enabling environment for people to find means of livelihood. That is why in some advanced countries the government provides a relief in the form of monthly stipend when they fail to create jobs for people to do. So based on this, the prayers of the aggrieved party are not out of place and it is only the court that can declare their case unjudicial. So let us not preempt the case, it is already in court

It does not make it wrong but there is no case since no agreement has being signed. All am just trying to let you understand is that the fastest solution to this kinda issues is not a court case but rather a mass protest by the youths of thisgreat nation, that only will make them listen. If the judge rules in their favour and the government pays them off or gets them jobs what then happens to the millions of jobless youths still roaming the streets?

Bullshit, these guys aint talking about their competencies buh asking for their right. They are brave people. Learn to be brave rather than cower away and think you are more competent than them. So since there are thousand jobless peeps, some shouldn't stand out to face this cruel act by some govt officials.
