Poetry by Lena Winfrey Seder

Sr. Lena is a convert to Islam who currently resides in the Sudan.

Desert Rose

I began my journey the day I was born.
My name told my destiny.
Yet, it remained hidden for me to discover.
I traveled a long time to get to this moment.
So many cactuses I stumbled over in the dark.
No star lighted my path-- I was not yet awake.
Naivety guided me into sandstorms that made wounds in my soul.
Ignorance blinded me as the cactus' thorns scratched me.
However, these wounds propelled me forward and kept me on
a certain path.
One day, when I looked ahead, I saw an oasis.
A mirage, I thought, so I slowly walked towards it-- expecting
to be fooled again.
When I reached the mirage, I found a rose.
I touched it and found it was no dream.
Entranced by this rose, I placed it in the vase of my heart.
As it took root, it became a part of me.
My blindness lifted, for I could see the true Light.
Faith rested in my heart.
My desert rose led me to this destiny.
When I stray-- its paper thorns remind me to come back to
the straight path.
Each day it continues growing, it strengthens my heart and
my soul.
I water it with my prayers, my charity, my fasting.
This rose is here to stay--
It guides me to an eternal Garden.
My thoughts, my goals, my actions are preparing my place in
that Garden.
That is where I will rest my roots--
As long as this rose remains in my heart.

Society's Disease

Racism, the great crime of humanity.
Why does one's race always claim superiority?
We are all the same; there is no inferiority.
When we look at each other we see a resembling face.
We all have a body and a soul of grace.
As individuals, we do have differences.
Some of us may take risks and chances.
Others of us may be shy and give few glances.
We should find common ground and make peace.
The hatred and killing should desist and cease.
We are all the children of Adam and in life have a lease.
We should lend a helping hand to each other.
We should remember that Eve is our common mother.
We should love our human sisters and brothers.

Peace At Last

Walking through the woods on a snowy day,
Seeing the crystal blanket was so deep,
I made a wrong turn and lost my own way.
Sliding over the hill Allah made so steep,
Finding the perfect place where I could rest,
I sat down beneath a tree that looked best.
As I sat watching the snow calmly fall,
I then laid me down to give up my all.
Curling up to go to sleep on the ground,
Hearing the voice of my friend calling me,
No longer would I utter one more sound.
Death takes my hand and pulls me from the tree.
Escaping a thornful life for my gain,
I'll reach a home of peace that has no pain.

Advice on Friends!

A real friend wishes his companions well,
He's not one who allows them to get close to hell,
Always be careful of the friends you choose,
So, in the end, Janah you will not lose,
If you find your companion is not stopping your wrong,
then, be weary, his friendship is not strong.
If you see the pattern made,
that when you are under your friend's shade,
Your Iman begins to fade,
Leave the worthless creation,
make friends with Allah, Surely that is a high station!.
A dervish who had knowledge of our present situation,
Once told his students the following dictation,
"The meeting of people will never enrich you,
save with the gibberish of useless gossip.
So diminish your meeting with people,
except for knowledge or to improve your condition" ~Empiree

Assalam alaykum brothers and sisters,

Having read some good poetry recently, i decided to recreate this topic, even though i should have done so earlier....

I believe most people do have something to write, but are not willing to write or share, perhaps, they are shy (like me sometimes), perhaps they are just plain lazy (like me again!) angry grin

So lets learn about the deen, inspire and motivate spirituality, and most importantly, lets do da'wah in the most amazing way....

Poetic Da’wah and other Da’wahtic writings

In the name of Allah the creator, May His Peace and Blessings be upon the noble prophet Muhammad (SAW), his household, and his companions and upon us all ameen.

Allah says in the glorious Qur’an: “who is better in speech than one who calls to Allah, does righteous deeds and says indeed I am among the Muslims” (Quran 41 vs. 33)

“you are the best nation raised up for mankind, you enjoin what is good and forbid what is bad and you believe in Allah” (Quran 3 vs. 110)
“Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong; they are the ones to attain felicity.” (Qur’an 3 vs. 104)

Narrated Abu Hurayrah ra

“Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: He who called (people to righteousness, there would be reward (assured) for him like the rewards of those who adhered to it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And he who called (people) to error, he shall have to carry (the burden) of its sin, like those who committed it, without their sins being diminished in any respect.” (Sahih Muslim)

This thread, as the title implies, is basically about da’wah. Initially, I wanted it to be only about poetry, but I observed that most people do not find poetry fascinating.

Therefore, the idea is to share poetry, as well as any form of writing, written by you or anyone else, which connotes da’wah, something that will rekindle our faith as well as invite people to this beautiful way of life.

NB.
Da’wah is an Arabic word which simply means call or invitation, in Islam; it means to invite people to Islam or inviting to good and righteous deeds. It is one of the responsibilities of a Muslim. The prophet (SAW) was reported to have said; “convey from me, even it be only a single verse” (Sahih al Bukhari)

I shall begin with poetry, which I had earlier posted on this section ma sha Allah and will subsequently add more in sha Allah.

I look forward to everyone’s contributions

wow!!!

Salam, this is a poem I wrote almost a year ago.

*My Beloved*

The first time we met I was young and innocent, I
fell in love with you naturally, like it was meant to
be.

I loved you and you loved me, there was no compulsion in our union, it was simple and beautiful, just like you.

Till date I don’t regret meeting you at my prime, I was younger and you were older but you didn’t take advantage of me, you held my hand all through and protected me from the evil eyes.

When I got angry with anyone you calmed me down, you taught me how to smile at all times, you lightened our home, I don’t really have the adequate vocabulary to describe you.

If only people can really know you, if only they take
their time to study you my beloved, then they will realise how special you really are.

Please permit me to tell them your name, so they can come searching for you, though I would have loved to keep you to myself, but you have taught me to never be greedy and to share goodness with my fellow humans.

My beautiful “islam”.

** Saint and Sinner**

I am not a saint
I am not a sinner

But I know I sinned
Long ago when I couldn’t see.

Trust me it didn’t feel good,
It only brought misery.

It’s a mystery isn’t it?
What you ran after all this time,
Used your wealth, time & energy
Only turned out to be just a……
Miserable ending…..
a mystery.

Ok……
“So the devil never comes to you”, you say
He won’t come to you with two horns on his head
Or looking red,
Or looking like what you had imagined.
Or like what came out of hell.

He comes to you in the form of your biggest desire,
He comes in a borrowed beautiful form,
A deceptive form,
A form you can’t ignore,
A form that would let you drop your guard.

Some of us won’t recognize his ugliness,
That ugliness within,
Cos the mind would see only what it desires,
And neglect what looks like fire.

I am not a saint
I am not a sinner
But I try to be righteous Muslim.

THE PERFECT HIJABITE.

Prudent in speech she is.
Modest in appearance she is.
Always amidst her contemporaries she is.
Like the sun amidst the stars is.

Her speech is wisdom from a tink tank.
Her gaze is pondering from an arc.
Her silence is contemplation never left blank.

Obnoxious she may be to others.
But only because of her innate order.
Which is appreciated by others.

How endless is ever her blessings?
Leading her to the everlasting mercy.
That is much to be desire if knowing.

What a message does her chastity send to the opposite gender?
Reflecting back to her same disbelieving gender.

Deprivation of liberty they say precise.
But so as to suppress they conscience they criticize.

Care not to what they say she is.
Because she knows what her aim is.
A garden which flowS beneath it a blessed stream. It is.
What a beautiful personality?
That can never be bought by nudity.
How proud she has done to her family?
And to the Islamic society.
Really a gift she is to her destiny (husband).
Indeed it is never a vanity.

DEATH

Death!
The inevitable fate of every living soul
Our stay here is temporary, someday we'll have to go
It's something beyond our power, something we can't control
And the time of it's coming? Only Allah knows

You can't see it approaching,so don't even consider running
But each moment you stay alive is a step closer to your demise
And you and the angel of death can't come to a compromise
He'll rip your soul out your body before your very own eyes

Into this earth you came alone, and out of it you'll go alone
To death,we're all prone
And to Allah we belong

From him we came, and unto him we shall return
And every soul will be rewarded with what it has rightfully earned

The prophet(s.a.w) said you'll die the way you live
And you'll be resurrected in the state in which you died

So take a look at your life,is this how you wanna die?
Reflect back on all the haram places your legs have been
All the haram movie scenes your wide open eyes have seen

The handshakes and the hugs with the opposite gender
How you're so accustommed to music, and the verses of the Qur'an you can barely remember

You've disobeyed Allah severally with no shame
Your evil desires are untamed
And your excuses for doing that are just so lame

Won't you mend your ways or do you wanna die in sin?
Is this how you wanna meet your lord?
Won't you strive for eternal reward?

Are you preparing for death,or just struggling to accumulate wealth?
It doesn't matter if you're in perfect health
You'll be gone soon as you breathe your final breath

So prepare while you're still alive
In Allah's way you should strive
Because in the end we'll all die,no matter how long we have survived

And then comes the life in the grave, the 1st of the hereafter's abode
Angels will descend down from above to question the dead soul

Soon as you're buried,Nakir and Munkar will enter your grave
And pose 3 questions, then await your response
'Who is your lord?' And 'what is your deen?',and lastly they'll ask you 'who is your prophet?'

The believer will respond and the unbeliever will be silent
And for he who has disbelieved in the grave is a great torment
For he failed to repent till death came and he was wrapped in the white garment
So his punishment will carry on right till the day of judgement

When he'll be called upon,to stand before his lord
And account for all the evil deeds he had done
Surely he had wronged himself to his own detriment
And in the blazing fires of hell he'll be one of the residents

Your Iman is dieing muslims,it needs quick reviving
It's like you've let the devil take the wheel so now he is driving
He's taking you for a ride, and you're sitting comfortably in the passengers side
Destruction awaits, won't you escape while you can
It's your choice to make, repent now or die unfaithfull,so where do you stand?

Did I Not Say To You

Did I not say to you, “Go not there, for I am your friend; in this
mirage of annihilation I am the fountain of life? ”

Even though in anger you depart a hundred thousand years
from me, in the end you will come to me, for I am your goal.

Did I not say to you, “Be not content with worldly forms, for I
am the fashioner of the tabernacle of your contentment? ”

Did I not say to you, “I am the sea and you are a single fish;
go not to dry land, for I am your crystal sea? ”

Did I not say to you, “ Go not like birds to the snare; come, for
I am the power of flight and your wings and feet? ”

Did I not say to you, “ They will waylay you and make you
cold, for I am the fire and warmth and heat of your desire? ”

Did I not say to you, “ They will implant in you ugly qualities
so that you will forget that I am the source of purity to you? ”

Did I not say to you, “Do not say from what direction the ser-
vant’s affairs come into order? ” I am the Creator without
directions.

If you are the lamp of the heart, know where the road is to the
house; and if you are godlike of attribute, know that I am your
Master.

Description Of Love

A true lover is proved such by his pain of heart;

No sickness is there like sickness of heart.

The lover's ailment is different from all ailments;

Love is the astrolabe of God's mysteries.

A lover may hanker after this love or that love,

But at the last he is drawn to the KING of love.

However much we describe and explain love,

When we fall in love we are ashamed of our words.

Explanation by the tongue makes most things clear,

But love unexplained is clearer.

When pen hasted to write,

On reaching the subject of love it split in twain.

When the discourse touched on the matter of love,

Pen was broken and paper torn.

In explaining it Reason sticks fast, as an ass in mire;

Naught but Love itself can explain love and lovers!

None but the sun can display the sun,

If you would see it displayed, turn not away from it.

Shadows, indeed, may indicate the sun's presence,

But only the sun displays the light of life.

Shadows induce slumber, like evening talks,

But when the sun arises the 'moon is split asunder.'

In the world there is naught so wondrous as the sun,

But the Sun of the soul sets not and has no yesterday.

Though the material sun is unique and single,

We can conceive similar suns like to it.

But the Sun of the soul, beyond this firmament,

No like thereof is seen in concrete or abstract.

Where is there room in conception for His essence,

So that similitudes of HIM should be conceivable?

Andalusian Sufi master Ibn 'Arabi:

Wonder,

A Garden amongst the flames!

My heart is capable of taking on any form

A meadow for gazelles

For the idols sacred ground

A cloister for monks

The pilgrim's Ka'aba

The tablets of the Torah

The scrolls of the Qur'an!

My religion is love

And wherever its caravan turns along the way

That is my creed, my belief, my faith!

Science and Faith

Once Science said to Faith:

"My eye can see all that is in this world;
The Entire world is within my net.
I am only concerned with material things,
What have I to do with spiritual matters?
I can strike a thousand melodies,
And openly proclaim all the secrets that I learn."

Faith said:

"With your magic even the waves in the sea are set ablaze,
You can pollute the atmosphere with foul, poisonous gases.
When you associated with me, you were light,
When you broke off from me, your light became fire.
You were of Divine origin,
But you have been caught in the clutches of Shaytan.
Come, make this wasteland a garden once again.
Borrow from me a little of my ecstasy,
And in the world set up a paradise.
From the day of creation we have been associates,
We are the low and high tunes of the same melody."

My Greatest Need is You

Rabi'ah al Adawiyya

Your hope in my heart is the rarest treasure
Your Name on my tongue is the sweetest word
My choicest hours
Are the hours I spend with You --
O Allah, I can't live in this world
Without remembering You--
How can I endure the next world
Without seeing Your face?
I am a stranger in Your country
And lonely among Your worshipers:
This is the substance of my complaint.

The World Has Become Weird Again by sino

The world has become weird again!

Katrina and Sandy wreaked havoc,
They used to be names of beautiful ladies
Until the era of pollution and global warming

The world has become weird again!

Sons impregnating their mothers,
Fathers impregnating their daughters,
If you ask me, that is just plain sick!

The world has become weird again!

Boys are now girls,
Girls are now boys,
It’s fashion, it’s just for fun, they say…

The world has become weird again!

Men love each other,
So do women, intimately cohabiting
They are gay! They want to have a baby!!!

The world has become weird again!

The fortune-tellers nor the stargazers, dare speak of that which they see,
The sights and sounds of the universe,
On man’s palm in HD

The world has become weird again!

The coral reefs, neither the sandy beaches nor the waterfalls interest no more,
Weightlessness, spaceship, space travel,
Man’s new found sport.

Is the world becoming weird again?
Or is it the human race?

For man seeks the world beyond,
And man looks forward to the worlds end
Man deems himself self-sufficient
Seeking immortality, forever living…

Only time will tell….
