Oyo PDP Crisis: Party Leaders, Aspirants Battle Patience Jonathan by DONLEKAN: 12:31am On Oct 28, 2014
Some Peoples Democratic Party leaders in Oyo State have kicked against a request by the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, for a former governor of the state, Rashidi Ladoja, to be “accommodated” in the PDP.

Mrs. Jonathan was said to have made the request during a meeting she had with the state PDP leaders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja nine days ago.

The PUNCH learnt on Sunday night that some of the leaders in attendance were another former governor of the state, Adebayo Alao-Akala; the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Jumoke Akinjide; a former Senate Leader, Sen. Teslim Folarin, and Chief Yekini Adeojo.

Ladoja, a former member of the PDP and now the National Leader of the Accord Party, is nursing a governorship ambition. He was also present at the villa meeting.

A PDP source, who attended the meeting disclosed to The PUNCH on Monday that most of those in attendance were stunned when the President’s wife suggested that Ladoja should be supported to realise his ambition.

He added that they did not only kick against her proposal , they also rejected her suggestion to share party offices in the state with Ladjola.

The source said, “The President’s wife asked that we should accommodate someone who is not a member of the party. How do we do this?

“She was tactically telling us to support his governorship ambition because she was saying she knew that Ladoja has the capacity to win election and defeat the All Progressives Congress in the state.

“But we disagreed and told her so. That was what happened, but she promised to convey another meeting soon where the issue would be further discussed.

“But I can tell you that we are not pleased with her activities in our party. We don’t understand where she derives the power to interfere in running of the PDP. In fact, most of us may not attend any other meeting summoned by her because she is not our leader.

She should keep off because if we field a wrong person, we may not defeat the APC in our state during the governorship election.”

Alao-Akala said it was true that the meeting with the First Lady was held, but he said he was not asked to step down for Ladoja.

He told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday night that the First Lady merely asked them to “accommodate” Ladoja in the PDP.

The former governor also confirmed that majority of those in attendance disagreed with Mrs Jonathan on the grounds that Ladoja had yet to dump the AP for the PDP.

Alao-Akala said, “Yes, it is true that the First Lady met us. But she didn’t ask me to step down. She said we should accommodate Ladoja in our party and we said it would be difficult to do so because he is not a member of the PDP. That was what happened.”

A Media Assistant to the President’s wife, Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, told The PUNCH in Abuja that he was not aware of the meeting.

Ladoja’s media aide, Lanre Latinwo, had said in a statement that his boss was not on his way to joining any party.

“Accord party in Oyo State remains one united entity and will continue to grow in leaps and bounds due to the sincerity of leaders of the party and the genuine love of the people.

“We urge members of the party and the general public to disregard the insinuation in all its entirety asserting that the Accord Party at the moment is not involved in any alliance talk.”

A member of the NWC who, also spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We appreciate her concern for the party, but she’s over doing it.

“We will appreciate it if she can stay off our party affairs. Her actions are making some members to feel that she’s controling her husband and all that.”

Mrs. Jonathan is known to be rooting for a former Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike and ex-Diamond Bank Managing Director, Alex Otti, for the PDP tickets in Rivers and Abia states respectively.

Some of the PDP leaders in the two states, who did not want their names in print, warned that if her activities were not checked, the PDP might not win the states.

Mrs. Jonathan described Wike as a listening and respectful politician who obeyed her when she asked him to drop his senatorial aspiration in 2011.

“You listened to me and dropped your senatorial aspiration. I pray God to protect you, lead you. Please go on with your aspiration, ” Mrs Jonathan had said when she visited the former minister in Abuja five days ago.

“I have handed you (Wike) over to our father, Dr. Peter Odili, and the people of Rivers State. You are going to Rivers State for the betterment of all of us and to wipe our tears,” she added.

After her speech, she symbolically handed Wike over to Odili, who was part of her entourage.

Speaking on the endorsement in Abuja on Monday, another PDP governorship aspirant, Mr. Tamunosisi Jaja, said though as a native of the state, Mrs. Jonathan had the right to endorse anyone. But he added that such aspirant needed the blessing of God.

He said, “I wouldn’t want to react to that endorsement by Dame Jonathan, who incidentally, by the Grace of God, is the First Lady and is an indigene of Rivers State.

“By virtue of the fact that she’s from Rivers State, she has every right to express her support for anybody.

“But of utmost importance to any seeker of public office is the fact that the most important endorsement is the endorsement of the Almighty God.

“As a Christian, my Bible tells me power comes from God and when God says yes, no one can say no.

“I think that what we are praying for is the Grace of God and even whoever she has endorsed needs the Grace of God, that’s the most important thing.”

A PDP chieftain in the state, who pleaded not to be named for fear of victimisation, said the endorsement of Wike by Mrs Jonathan was a personal thing.

“She has only expressed her personal desire. But I am worried, just like my colleagues who are not speaking out that she should not get directly involved in our party affairs. Her activities are not good for our party. They may have a boomerang effect on our performance in the governorship race.

“I know that our national leadership are also worried by her meddlesomeness.”

In Abia, Mrs Jonathan is said to be rooting for the former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank, Dr. Alex Otti, while the governor of the state Chief Theodore Orji prefers Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

“Her support was what made the man (Oti) to resign from his lucrative job, “ a source close to the President’s wife claimed.

He however feared that a clash between Orji and Mrs Jonathan over who would fly the PDP governorship flag in the state could give an edge to opposition parties in the state like the APC and the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Otti, who was at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja on Monday where he bought his nomination form, has said he would create a Ministry for Aba Affairs to transform the popular Aba market.

Ladoja remains the candidate to beat in Oyo State. If Mama Peace actually made the statement that was alluded to her, then as a matter of fact; she knows more about the goings on in the state more than the charlatans parading their selves as PDP leaders in the state. She has just told them the home truth!

Hehe...no room for PDP in Oyo state...they should keep on fighting themselves and not bring their wahala back to Oyo state again. Oyo has been very peaceful and progressive since the exit of the PDP. We want them no more angry

the statements u people make sometimes places a hard choice to swallow because one dnt knw if we shld place u on a fool's list, a demented one, or make person pick 'all of the above'...

When akala dey pdp, he go come allow ladoja? Ladoja himself is not seeking to be in pdp..so, what did she knw abt Oyo state?
Ladoja is the next govr of oyo state under any party except pdp because akala will floor him in the primaries with experience.

If 'patient jonathan' get brain, she go knw say Akala will defeat ladoja at the primaries and ajumobi will win the second term because oyo state won't vote akala again..

Please what political office is imPatience Jonathan occupying or is she the the country's Oracle? She installed the current Chief of Army Staff. She wanted to install the current PDP National Chairman after Bamanga Tukur divided the party along imPatience Jonathan interests. She wants to install the next Bayelsa governor after fighting the current governor at the market place. She wants to install Rivers next governor after Amaechi fought her to stand still. She wants to install Abia's next governor. Now she wants to install Oyo's next governor. Please lets ask her who will be Nigeria's next president.

A man (Jona-daft) who cannot control his illiterate grammarian wife definitely cannot govern a country.

Someone will soon blame PEJ's recklessness that has been left unchecked by the husband GEJ on the opposition.

They must blame the opposition for everything instead of asking GEJ to finally grow some balls.

Basic comprehension skills is what you lack. Even a blind man in Oyo state knows Ladoja has this cult follower-ship in Oyo State. Another fact is this man enjoys the support of the biggest voting bloc in Oyo State, which is Ibadan. He was the cog in the wheels of PDP in the 2011 guber elections, this time around; he is in it to win it. A wise PDP leader would rather have Ladoja rule as a PDP governor than for him to win the election on Accord Party's platform. Please note, Akala is very irrelevant in the scheme of things in Oyo State PDP - he won't even get the PDP ticket, he can't even get the senatorial ticket anymore; the best Akala can get is an ambassadorial slot if he is very lucky cos from GEJ's body language, he is not ready to work with charlatans in his second term.

No primaries will take place in Oyo PDP, the PDP now knows they have to present the best of the lot, not the most connected to the powers that be.

Who shall tame Dame?
Who is to be blamed?
Dame is fanning flames;
Flames of shame!

Who shall tame Dame?
Her name has no fame
Everyone now knows her game;
'Cause her reputation is lame.

So who should tame Dame?
The man who gave her his name
Who married Dame
Must tame Dame.

thanks for this comment. Actually many people don't know the history of pej, she is the politician that made gej what he is today. She understands the politics of each state and to be candid ,there is no way pdp will win the oyo governoorship if ladoja contests under accord and ajimobi under apc, this is simply because the votes will be scattered and apc will be able to use incumbency powers to its advantage . The best candidate to defeat the apc is ladoja , whether ladoja will decamp to the pdp remains to be seen ,it is better for pdp to accept ladoja and win . The meeting was just a formality to identify key members who opposed the idea ,I am sure many of those that attended were aware and had agreed . Settlement will be made and I am sure by the time gej steps in , all opposition voices to the idea will be silenced . Akala can never win the governorship race in ibadan ,ppl haven't forgotten how thugs and holigans had a field day killing and destroying properties during his time,I know nobody in ibadan wants to go back to those days. It is better for pdp to lose akala and accept ladoja.

How many first ladies behaved the way your honey is poke nosing everywhere? Please, collect your pants back from her and wear them. Till then, Patience Jonathan for president come 2015.

Exactly! That woman has foresight. As a matter of fact, the powers that be know this. They do not want to gamble with the southwest as it is fast emerging as the beautiful bride in the coming elections.

just like I said the meeting was just a mere formality, the decision has been made. The south west is very crucial to 2019 elections and with 2 states out of apc hands ,pdp will want to reclaim as many states as possible in the south west. With the look of things it is most likely that apc will still drop one or 2 more states in the south west and this will drastically reduce their political impoortance and most likely signal the end oof that party. I have always said it that the greatest mistake ac n made was in creating the so called mega party, the parties brought in have so far proved to be total liability without any serious political advantage. I am sure tinubu and his advisers have seen this now and will be thinking and planning hard how to save and salvage what is left of their empire never gave accord party a chance or regarded them as a serious threat but when I saw the candidates contesting I knew oyo state indigenes will not vote for any of them. the winning idea can come from anyone as long as the party wins .pdp isn't like apc ,where tinubu will be dicatating who becomes a local government chairman in ekiti state from his beer parlor in ikeja. For ur information pej is a pdp party member and what happened was a party affair .

Stop being myopic, how will PEJ know more of Oyo politics than the average Ibadan man. She wants Ladoja because of personal reasons which might be know to her only.
Ladoja is popular but why didn't he win the last election in Oyo state. Ladoja is best as a kingmaker not a king himself.

Lol @ kingmaker. I will bring you pictures of his swearing in on May 29, 2015. I am so confident about this.

Accord party was two months old in Oyo state when Ladoja contested in 2011. That he got such huge number of votes is a testament of his popularity. So with the better structures the party has on ground, it's welcome Agodi in 2015. I never thought it could happen at first but when I was presented with different permutations; I gave up. I always put my mouth where my money is, if you wanna have a bet, I'm up for it. I'm that confident about this smiley

Akala came to prominence because of the Amala politics played by Late Adedibu, left to that Akala is no match for the current APC structure. Ogbomosho votes will be divided into three and that is Akala's strongest base.
PEJ was actually right by asking those greedy politicians to accommodate Ladoja. In the event that Ladoja wins, Accord party will naturally become PDP once Ladoja is lobbied back.
