At What Age Should Your Parents Stop Commanding You To Cut Your Hair? by Keluong(m): 1:00am On Oct 28, 2014 |
I really want to know. I am 20 and will soon be 21. I am keeping afro of 4months which i usually shape and trim My dad is always complaining about my hair but I will pretend as if I will cut it. But I don't want to cut it and will eventually not cut it. Sometimes I feel that at least, don't I have a right of my own to choose the hairstyle I want? He just said that whether l like it or not, I am cutting it this weekend. I am getting annoyed, but I don't want to do what I will regret. I think I am old enough to decide that I want to keep my hair, so what is the age I can say that I don't want to cut my hair and it won't look bad? Edit. 4 yrs after, little boy has grown beards and keeps it cool. Now on a trademark fade with a good shave. Moved out of home last year for life in the West. Now a part breadwinner to my siblings. Life tho. Moves quite fast... Dad remained stubborn, still drove me to the salon the final day I was leaving the house. Thanks to my parents for the lessons, but still shouldn't force me to cut my hair. I liked it. |

Keluong: When next he complains, politely tell him that is the hairstyle you want to carry. You could say something like "Daddy, since I started keeping my hair, it has been more conducive for me. More so, I go about with my comb so be rest assured it will be tidy at all times." You don't have to argue and I can assure you, the way you present it is what will matter. However, if he is still insistent, get your mum talk to him or just collect your pocket money for weeks and go sit in school. 1 Like |

Obey your father if he gives you money for the haircut. If not, kindly tell him you like afro and it makes you comfortable (and try keeping it lower, for now). 1 Like |

If you were my momma's boy, there's no age limit ooo. She even complains of the beard her married younger bother keeps let alone her son lol Endure till you leave the house. Believe me,they feel you'd look more decent on a low cut than on afro. Parents sha....we stil love them all the same 2 Likes |

GboyegaD:I ve thought of this long since, but in my family, nobody disscusses matters with my dad, unless he asks you. Worse is now when you want to oppose his instructions. I don't know if its similar to someoneelse's home. Infact, i think. saying it politely will make them more authoritative. My mum is against the hair, but she doesn't command me again and I am at going to be home till January. |

Keluong: Going by the pedigree of your family then I truly can't advise however, there's a way you can be assertive without been rude. I still suggest you find a way to subtly and firmly state your interest. An example is when you know he is in a light mood walk around where he is talking about how handsome your hair makes you and I believe He will let you be. Another option is to ask him what he feels about you making decisions and the challenge with this approach is his response either tells if you can keep the hair or you have to cut it. Above all, avoid confrontations and don't be rude. |

Hey everyone, I finally reduced the hair just for the sake of peace. Infact I wouldn't have reduced the hair of not that my dad forced and followed me to the saloon. I finally reduced it to a mini afro. I noticed he was always grumbling about it there. infact, he was trying to tell the barber to take it lower than I wanted, till the talk in the saloon was getting too much because I also telling the barber what I wanted. He then ordered that I cut my hair every two weeks so as to go to the saloon again. Exactly after 2 weeks, he gave me money and said that I must go and cut it. I did not want to, but seeing that the previous haircut was not looking good to me again, I decided to go for the "fade" hairstyle on a lowcut. My parents said it looks like agbero hairstyle. I like the haircut and everyone is also saying its looking nice, even my boss at work except my parents. They ve now ordered that I cut it on Friday. This is very annoying to me cos they are making it feel that I don't have a choice of my own again. Yesterday, my boss who is a close friend of my dad, had the same hairstlye. My cousins also keep it. I want to tell my dad that, but I don't know how the African mentality of respect will see it. |

As long as you stay under their roof and are dependent on them, you abide by their rules. Go and cut your hair just the way they want it. When you become independent, you can grow dada |

Keluong:I concur with her.. You are not matured. If you are, this won't be an issue.. You are a graduate and you have a job, you need to convince your father that you are grown up.. He still believes you are a kid that needs being told what to do.. Just tell him what you want to do and stand your ground.. He will initially be angry but will learn to respect you more |

I used to have this issue with my mom when I turned 16. I refused to let her tell me to cut my hair. She handed the matter over to my father, and that was it. I would tie a scarf to bed so when I awoke, the hair would be flattened. But as time went by, I discovered that keeping an afro is stressful and capital-intensive. Even plaiting it is far more distubing. Besides, not everyone would appreciate your appearance, definitely not working organizations with a respectable front to protect. After all, you'll most probably cut your hair in the near future, why raise dust now? |

DesChyko: I ve cut it. check my bolded post. Tho I cut it to fade lowcut style and everyone is saying its nice including my boss who recently made the same hairstlye. But my parents still insist that I should cut it while comparing my hair to only "agberos" they see carrying it. By the way, saying I will still cut it later. Is it not the same as you keeping skincut since most old people are on skin? |
