heatmeup:Yes you can. It depends. One of my former lecturers had his BSc industrial chemistry. Today, he is a PhD holder in chemical engineering. If you decide to study in a foreign institution which I advise, you will not need to do a PGD. You will only take some make-up courses. |

jaybee3:OK , thanks...A Levels is done before admission tho . In Nigeria it takes about 6 years for bsc plus ASUU strike and then you have your nysc . so in the uk , a 26 years Nigerian graduate with masters may be competing with 22 years old with masters. |

Feex:I know someone who went straight from Chemistry to Chemical Engineering and currently doing his PhD (not sure if it is still in Chem Eng). In the UK you can only proceed to your masters if you meet the minimum requirement for MSc after your course work otherwise you get a PGD or Certificate. Those registered for PGD can choose to proceed to a masters (which is just the Thesis) if they do well. |

Rushing into doing your master to me isn't the best option, I schooled in Uk and didn't do my masters, instead I ran some professional course in Project management. Return back to Nigeria last year for my Nysc but to my surprised people where like why didn't I do my master instead of the professional courses I did, till now I'm still being question..I thinkit has to do with individual perspective about it. 1 Like |

People be talking as if the work is just standing there waiting for you..... As long as there's still time and the job ain't forthcoming, why not move ahead with your masters. Am 23 and currently doing my youth service which by God's grace I'll be done in July. I have already concluded plans for masters which begins that same july. Aint saying professional course is a bad idea, just do whatever that is available to you at the period... My opinion 4 Likes |

Acegoals: This is how it should be by default, but this isn't how the average Nigerian graduate sees it. The average Nigerian graduate is after that Msc 'cause he believes that is the only way he can have his CV upgraded and his chances of bagging in a job enhanced. |
Re: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by Nobody: 4:39pm On Nov 07, 2014 |
Personally I think both are good, it depends on the individual's interest. MSc I think will benefit those who are aspiring to take up Lecturing jobs. after my first degree, I had the opportunity to either go for Msc or professional masters, I know I'm not very good @reading tenaciously or researching day and night, I opted for the other option. I'm currently running a professional master degree, and with my little experience with the course I'm running, I can say going for a professional course will give u an edge in the career u wanna pursue, but MSc will give u an edge if you wanna go into education |

If you are in the civil service it's required that gets a professional qualifications before being promoted to level 14. Then didn't say Masters Degree, professional qualification is rated far higher that a Masters degree.Masters degree is mainly Academic,While professional qualification is the combination of Academic and practical |

Re: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by ocheejemb: 5:00pm On Nov 07, 2014 |
Strictly speaking, a professional course is exactly that, a course for professionals. It should not be done by fresh graduates but by professionals in a field seeking to certify their expertise in that field. A Master's degree on the other hand is just furthering a first degree so theres no real requirement to have work experience, although that almost always helps. |
Re: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by dabossman(m): 5:17pm On Nov 07, 2014 |
It depends on the field and what you want to do with it. For me I went for a professional course because I was going into a different sector from the one I majored in as an undergrad. Some folks suggested a PGD, then Master's but I went for the professional course because the industry I work in is more of what you can deliver than paper qualifications. I was already working and gaining on-the-job experience, so the professional course only helped to hone my skill set. People need to decide what works for them at each given time. Some tend to just follow the crowd without analyzing their own career path and goals. Now I'm think of doing my Master's after several years of working, simply because I'm considering the academia as a career path when I'm much older. |

depending on ones plan. When u r plannin to remain in academic,u will find it interesting going for ur masters immediately but in d case dat u r optin for company work,i will prefer professional course but i will like u to have some experiences in ur field of study before goin for any course.masters immediately is like one is plannin to be a lecturer but for professional programmes, one is bending towards experience but my advice is one should know wot n wot his/her field really required before goin for any course.best of God. |

Great question For entry level, you do not need a masters. but for upper management / middle layer management positions, you will need a masters. The general consensus is, do not rush for a masters, work for a while before venturing into a Masters |

Hmmm... If you are working in an industrial line, professional courses are better. If in educational line, go for you master asap. But be ready to work harder while undergoing professional courses ooooo cos it involves a greater denial of self enjoyment and paparazzi.... Different lecturers: different professionals who will set questions: different markers etc. Professional courses no be beans ooo... |

Hi Poster, Whatever you do depends on your career trajectory. IF YOU WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL, YOU NEED TO PASS PROFESSIONAL EXAMS. Obtaining an LL.M (masters in Law) or PHD doesnt make you a LAWYER Obtaining an MSc (masters in Accounting) or PHD doesnt make you an ACCOUNTANT Obtaining an MSc (masters in Banking) or PHD doesnt make you a BANKER Obtaining Masters or working in those capacities can confer title on you. e.g. working in a firm as Accountant doesnt make you an Accountant. You are simply working as an Accountant and you would not be allowed to occupy the office of Chief Accountant or Chief Financial Officer (especially in a big organisation or regulated industry). A key prerequisite for leadership role in a bank requires that you hold Chartered Inst. of Bankers' (CIBN) Charter. Same goes for Chief Accountant role in Listed companies (even non-listed companies that you would like to work is so organised to want an ICAN/ACCA holder to head Finance and Accounting). Furthermore, I dont know anyone that wants a Lawyer that has PHD from Oxford and cannot practice in any country. Simply put, any well thinking African (seeking employment in Nigeria) should finish with First Degree and seek Professional qualification and if opportuned, grab 2 years experience before seeking Masters. This is very simple. On the second note, in this current market place....a professional exam would help you get a job quicker than Masters degree in this country especially when u have passive Masters degree [s](as offered by 110 out of 118 universities in the UK)[/s]. A typical Nigerian private firm that is result-oriented wants someone who has got indepth understanding of a subject matter not a Master of ALL with no sound technical skill apart from Powerpoint presentation and outlook. At the end of the day, every organisation needs a balance of people with Masters and people with Professional certificate. One of the Global corporations that I have worked has a blend of both Worlds at the Executive Management level....those that would wear Oxford suits, with cambridge presentation skills and have NO technical knowledge but will secure a client and those with Lagos island "italian" suits, fair presentation skills and will DO the job for the client. If I were you, I would seek professional qualification after first degree, seek quality experience in a firm where i can get technical knowledge and get certified.....And finally, opt for a master degree when i am ripe to transit into Management cadre. |
