One thing i have realized in lagos is that, they are quick to ban things, but fail to do proper implementation, the economy is not ok and they want to ban people from making end means, i tire for this our nigerian government, they are there chopping money and stealing money, but yet they dont want to spread the wealth, sometimes i wonder why we just sit down and watch all theses thieves steal oue nigerian money, year in year out, this country needs a revolution, for those nairalanders whose parents/relatives/friends are in government stealing money, one day be one day, |

Well even though this is a welcome devpt, I also i hope d SG has also plans to plug the hole left by the kid in terms of the family's source of income else it will never be implemented fully. |

Nice one by Lagos state. Besides, this was not just done overnight. I am aware that Primary Education is free and the needed textbooks were handed over to schools. Just about a month ago, pubilc schools in Lagos state were given text books and last week, the commissioner for Education and some top officials in that department went around unannouced to see if the books were actually given to the students and used by them also. I think Lagos is really doing well. BRF, thumbs up!!! |

Poverty and the need to make ends meet and the twin courses of hawking by children. The Lagos state govt should also consider how to alleviate poverty in the state and should not just stop at banning hawking at those hours. www.wetindeyforum.com |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by harryobodo(m): 3:35pm On Nov 24, 2008 |
Good initiative but poor execution and timing are the twin problems affecting this nation of which the Lagos government is playing a big part.Government at all levels should realise that they have failed the coming generations in every aspect of governance.Lagos state government should provide an enabling environment that encourages better utilisation of skills and talents as obtainable in other parts of the world.Simply put, government should copy all the good things in developed countries, instead of copying partly to her advantage. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by JustGood(m): 3:40pm On Nov 24, 2008 |
This is great. Those who cant afford to go to school should loiter about on the streets and become nuisances and junkies instead. Should the govt not provide means for these set of people before making such a law? |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Kobojunkie: 4:08pm On Nov 24, 2008 |
angelina08: Did you bother asking the kid why he was not in school at that time? Or is it that you just want your conscience spared of having to see such a kid during the hours between 8pm and 2 pm each work day? Let me re-iterate, a ban is good but there are things that should come before a ban, to better help people adjust to changes. An example for those who are too fixated on how good this man is to them to see things objectively, the ban on generators that was proposed earlier this year. How is that ban working out so far? |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by dlox01(m): 11:52am On Nov 25, 2008 |
Kobojunkie:kobo,u seem not to understand this rule is goin to start a chain reaction, and it will be a reaction that will build lagos state eventually.now u see, some of these children ur seeing are not going to school because thier parents (who are chilling under one shade)are sending them to hawk goods.some of them are attending free schools but their parents look at it as, shey na dat one go bring moni ni?,now,if that is stoped for more the 9hrs in a day,u will see that in the morning u will see older people n parents who sent thier kids out hawking those goods themselves to keep up.now the child eventually would go to school learn one or two things(education is the backbone of any economy) n come home n work as the case maybe, but at least he/she would have education, now 3-5 yrs later that child would have ssce or something,he will have an alternative in life n not continious hawking 4ever,now if he stays a hawker without an education of some sort what do u think this child would tell his own child?of course na to hawk, coz he hasnt seen another side of life, thatz what is causing problems, people dont want to try,its passing form generation to generation.now in the earlier period, some kids would go to school, some wouldnt n them n thier parents would pack n leave lag or find another means of getting through, some would scream out that there aint schools for thier kids n then the govt would be forced to build more schools for these kids.it happens, take alook at tanker drivers that park on the road n cause problems for u n i,they actually gave them a large land for them to move to but nah they wouldnt, they like what they are doing!!you claim ur in yankee abi?do people just park on the road for no reason?do u think the schools in yankee are enuff for the every child that wants to go to school?bear in mind in yankee the budget compared to lagos state.well, its all a matter of time but things wouldnt be any diffrent if the change dosnt start now.this rule would affect the kids positivly and bring out those parents that cant control thier dicks to hawk.I SUPPORT THIS MOVE TO THE MAX |

This is a good move by the government no doubt, but the problem is that they never follow through. In two months, the kids would be back on the street. Can they keep them off for ever? |

Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Kobojunkie: 6:36pm On Nov 25, 2008 |
Ayee Idris: The kids will always be on the street, only now they can only be on the street before 8 am in the morning and after 3pm in the afternoon. What difference does that really make? Follow through or not, I do not see how this SOLVES anything. I am yet to actually read anyone explain in here how it HELPS the 1) Situation of the kids concerned 2) Lagos State Is this move for cosmetic reasons? So we can hide the children during school hours? I don' get it. |

You know, We bought half a dozen of Oranges yesterday for N100 from a Kid, he couldnt have been more than 10. We had to, Even though we have orange trees in our house and we can actually make a living from them. I do not like the situation, but, wheres the Alternative? Where? Ban or no Ban, school hour or not, these Children will be on the streets. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by RedHotChic(f): 3:03am On Nov 27, 2008 |
You know, Come to think of it, is it not better than in Brooklyn NY where 7 yr olds peddle drugs?. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Kobojunkie: 3:13am On Nov 27, 2008 |
@Gamine, even worse, many of these kids, out of hopelessness might be pushed into crime or fall victim to some idiot posing as a helper in their situation, as a result of a ban that restricts them without really helping them. I was watching a series on child sex trade, and how africa is fast becoming a major area for pedophiles. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Gamine(f): 3:14am On Nov 27, 2008 |
Oh, So what are we talking about here, Some of these kids do honest work, Its on the same streets you see 20+ years people with complete hands and legs, sitting idle and listening to Gongo Aso. Something has to be done to the whole system. BAN BAN BAN, i wonder if Julius Agwu has released a song on this |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by realcele: 2:02pm On Nov 27, 2008 |
Will the teachers not be on strike, government need to analyse root cause of everything. Good but there need to make provision for these kids to be and stay in school. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by JJYOU: 2:26pm On Nov 27, 2008 |
nigeria has too many lazy adults busy wasting their lives while feeding on their kids sweat and struggles. hawking exposes kids especially girls to small scale using the body for sales |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Kobojunkie: 3:27pm On Nov 27, 2008 |
JJYOU: are you sure hawking is to blame for that? |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by sherrylo: 10:05pm On Nov 27, 2008 |
Yes,fathers and mothers should do the hawking themselves instead of endangering their kid's lives. Some parents can even send a five year old child to go hawking! |

Is there anything wrong with teenage street hawking? It is a good lesson in industry and hardwork. Abeg this is a bad law. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Kobojunkie: 7:12pm On Nov 28, 2008 |
JJYOU: I am not sure I agree. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Uche2nna(m): 7:15pm On Nov 28, 2008 |
littlekim: If U are supposed to be in school and U are out hawking, then there is a whole lot wrong with it. Also, U got to be careful when sending any kid to hawk. Some females have been put in the family way in the name of hawking. Trust lascivious market men!!! There are plenty of other ways to get ur kids lessons in industry and hardwork. |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by JJYOU: 7:51pm On Nov 28, 2008 |
Kobojunkie:you are not required to agree with me but can i refer you to uche2nna's note below Uche2nna: trust morally bankrupt nigerian men to take advantage of vulnerable young people. i was shocked to see 3 young girls hawking in ibadan last year definately below 15. ALL 3 pregnant. |

yemmyse:yea yea. not same day. saw 2 at iwo road junction and the other at a petrol station still selling ground nuts about. it broke my heart some idiot can sleep with a child let alone family still allow a pregnant child go selling things about. we need help in that country |
Re: Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by Kobojunkie: 9:16pm On Nov 28, 2008 |
JJYOU: Well, here is what I don't see you telling us. Were these three girls exposed to the men while hawking or were they reduced to hawking as a result of their situation ie. being pregnant and having no other way to support self due to one reason or another. Could be they were in school when they got pregnant but had to drop out and fend for self by hawking or something. Ordinarily stepping out of the house in Nigeria exposes young children to such morally corrupt men as the ones you speak of. I remember s a kid, there was this dude who got some of gals, who would go buy water from his yard, pregnant. For all we know, the three girls may have been impregnated by family members. Sure any kind of exposure could lead to such, so as you mention hawking, can we be sure to mention that ordinarily sending your kids to play exposes them to the same and so maybe we should start banning those for that particular reason? lol Not that I am against a ban on child hawking, I am against policies that may potentially lead to more bad than good for those involved. I still think this ban is cosmetic in origin as I do not see how it helps anyone. |
