The Nigeria Police spent a whopping N102m to purchase dogs, replace retired/dead canines and procure dog equipment in 2007.

Out of this amount, according to documents obtained by our correspondent, N13.9m was “allocated to the section (dogs section) throughout the federation for the maintenance of existing police service dogs, the replacement of dogs and the purchase of dog equipment from January to December, 2007.”

Saturday Punch discovered that the police claimed the money was also spent on dog equipment such as leaches, chains, kennel collars, combs, brushes, tracking lines, hand protectors, training suits and training harness. The documents also showed that the police spent N16.640m on the “maintenance and feeding of horses.”

It was not clear how many dogs the money was actually spent on as part of the documents put the number at 122 while another portion put it at 71. In a summary, which is also contained in the documents, the police put the number of its dogs at 71, out of which 17 were said to be ‘unserviceable.’

The documents said, “The sum of N85m was allocated for the purchase of dogs, replacement of retired/dead dogs and for the purpose of dog equipment such as leaches, chains, kernel collars, combs, brushes, tracking lines, hand protectors, training suits, tracking harness, etc in the year under review. Due to the inadequate funding of the section during the past year, the section could only account for 122 dogs in the year under review.”

The distribution of the dogs to the 36 states was outlined as Enugu State (four), Imo (three), Kaduna (18), Katsina (19), Kwara (five), Lagos (four), Ondo (seven), Plateau (seven) and Sokoto (six). As regards horses, it was stated that there were 24 in Adamawa, 22 in Bauchi, 90 in Borno, 10 in Gombe, 38 in Kaduna, 19 in Kano and 16 in Katsina. Other states with horses are Kebbi (11), Kwara (four), Lagos (five), Nasarawa (11), Plateau (11), Sokoto (12) and Taraba (two).

Attempts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Agberebi Akpoebi, for comments were unsuccessful.

Nigerian dogs are known to have a distinct preference for champagne, caviar, truffles and women of questionable virtue, so anyone complaining about the financing of their lavish canine lifestyle is merely a disgruntled enemy of progress who should be thrown to the dogs for disciplinary action and re-education.

this is too funny, LOL. Especially the part where these dogs were divided up and shared among the country as if they were sharing oil money or this was sharing one goat among a whole village naija style. "Mama boniface, this na your share". Maybe people can start fighting about the sharing of these dogs that seem to be more equipped than the police themselves. How come so and so's state got only 4 dogs? Where is the federal character in all of this? 19 in Kano? If these dogs are for fighting drug abuse do they have the ability to sniff out dangerous possibly sniffable gutters? LOL.

all that amount for dogs when the police handlers are on less than 10,000 with zero life insurance or welfare benefits and we ask why policemen collect bribes
