I woke on a Wednesday morning earlier in the month of May 2016 to news feeds of the missing EgyptAir airline aircraft. What exactly is going on in the airspace these days? I asked myself, as there have been other cases of missing aircrafts in recent times. I said a prayer for the souls on board as well as their families and loved ones, and then I set out to start my day.
When I got to the office, I decided to follow up on updates regarding the missing aircraft and there were reports confirming that it had indeed crashed. As at the time these reports were published, the cause of the crash was still unknown.
As I imagined the pain the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims were probably feeling at the time, my mind traveled back in time to the plane crash which happened here in Nigeria just a few years ago. I lost a good friend to the crash and so it was particularly emotional to imagine that other people were now going through the traumatic experience of losing a loved one so unexpectedly.
In my quest to discover what caused the EgyptAir plane crash, I resorted to watch some unedited videos online and that was when it happened!
I stumbled on a Globacom Advert encouraging subscribers to register their Globacom Sim Cards.
For the benefit of those who are yet to see this advert, let me give a brief synopsis.
The main character in the advert is aboard a small aircraft with three other passengers and a pilot, their destination wasn't revealed to us. At some point during the flight, the aircraft loses an engine, the pilot reassures them that they would arrive at their destination safely. They continue the journey and shortly after, they lose the second engine and so the aircraft crashes into some sort of jungle. Thankfully, all the individuals onboard survive and the pilot absconds to an unknown destination leaving his passengers stranded.
All the survivors reach for their mobile phones in a bid to call for help. Unfortunately, they are unable to connect as their service providers have no network coverage in the area save for one of them...the lead character in the advert. He discovers he has network coverage on his phone but unfortunately he is informed by an automated voice, that he cannot make calls because his sim has not been registered.
As soon as the other passengers discover this, they start walking towards him in a scary zombie like fashion indicating they are about to harm him and while tries to get away from them, he falls into a ditch filled with water. At this point it becomes evident to us that it had all been a nightmare as he is instantly startled out of his sleep in the next scene. Needless to say, he picks up his phone obviously in a bid to go and get his Globacom sim card registered.
Now while this is a very important message for the network service providers to pass on, as it is a security measure which should be taken serious; my question is was this really the best story line to use to drive the point home?
Should the commercial breaks while watching a programme or the advert that comes up while you are trying to watch a Youtube video make you relive painful memories?
There are thousands of people out there who have either lost a loved one to a plane crash, or survived one themselves. There are even more people who have been on such turbulent flights that for a few minutes they were unsure of how the story would end. I believe these
category of people would rather have the sim card registration message communicated to them in a less painful manner.
I am also forced to consider the role APCON played in vetting this particular advert and why the content was not considered offensive. Perhaps if this was the only way to drive home the message of the importance of sim registration, a warning should have been written across the scene just before the commercial begins warning viewers of the nature of the content.
I honestly wonder if the objective of the commercial was to make the audience laugh (as there was an attempt to infuse some sort of humour), or incite fear (based on the grave consequences the lead character in the advert faced by not registering his sim). Whatever the intention was, its translation is lost in the controversial story line which was used to communicate the message.
The message is important but the approach was insensitive, crude and unimaginative.
The world has evolved to the point where the audience determines what kind of content is acceptable and what kind of content they want to be exposed to.
Therefore, all content generators (including advertisers) are tasked with the responsibility of considering all possible reactions to the content they put out there.
Was this advert even tested before it was put out there to ascertain the reactions of people towards it? Some people may consider the advert inoffensive and creative. However, considering the sensitive nature of the subject matter in the advert Globalcom should have stayed clear of it and found a more innovative way to sell the sim registration service.
I am of the opinion that this advert should stop receiving airplay as it gravely insensitive. I can only imagine how frightened one would be if one were to watch this advert while waiting to board a flight!
Dear Globalcom, please find a less traumatic way of convincing Nigerians to register their sims!
