The only time our professor is wrong. We've been reading and writing a lot on Nairaland I don't know where he got the idea that there's a decline in reading and writing. With the introduction of cheap smart phones and cheaper data bundles.. one would think It's an encouragement for we Africans to explore the internet the more; having been previously rated as the most backward continent based on internet use by the West. If professor thinks otherwise then he must really be high on 1860 books. my 3coins! 42 Likes 3 Shares |

Its said that if you are trying to hide anything from Nigerians, put it in a book ; they wouldnt bother checking/reading it... But seriously, the adverse effects aside, the internet has helped in a plethora of ways which cannot be overlooked Shoutout to the earlier generations who made it through school without search engines How they did it,i haven't the faintest of ideas 24 Likes 1 Share |

AceOfDiamonds: It's often said that modernization makes you smarter. Before the invention of paper around 1200 A.D or B.C (will google it!), how were humans coping?Check your history books or wiki!. Then it was termed "Technology". But now, its just ordinary paper. Or the invention of the printing press around 1300- 1600 AD, how were things? I think it was Aristotle that said that books were going to make us dumber because we will be carrying less information in our brains! How has that worked out? Yeah Right. Anyway, Coordinate classes online. The Prof. speaks of the inevitable.. The Internet and gadgets are advancements which've affected how we live, do business, acquire information, and connect with others. A few things that once were considered social mainstays are now either obsolete or well on their way: Movie Rental Stores Maps ( just punch in your destination into your GPS & you're good to go) Public pay phones VCRs Phone books, dictionaries, encyclopedias Newspaper- With most communication now conducted online, magazines and newspapers crumbling, and e- readers increasing in popularity, paper is now on serious life support. 1 Like 2 Shares |

In my 200 level, my engineering communication lecturer was accusing me of having a northern accent and not been able to pronounce some words properly. he told me that English language has made it possible for scientific principles to be expressed properly. The question I ask him then was why Japan with 127million people has produce several nobel prize winners in science and technology and can be boast of several world class infrastructure, engineering capability and third largest economy by speaking a japanese kanji language 9 Likes 3 Shares |
