Recently, the blogosphere was awashed with the news that President Ali Bongo of Gabon has an Igbo origin.He was adjudged to be among the numerous Biafran children adopted by former President,Omar Bongo,during the civil war.
The opposition party in Gabon is demanding for a DNA test in order to ascertain his "Gabon-ness".Their argument is that the constitution rejects people whose parents are foreigners from contesting elective post.However,the president has rejected demands for him to undergo a DNA test.The situation is stoking tension in Gabon.
On the other hand,Chinua Achebe pointedly remarked in his book,There was a Country,that hundreds of Biafran children were transported into Gabon during the Civil war.-

now I believe my grand father. Ali bongo was returned from Gabon after been treated of kwashioko after the civil war to a place called afoegbu in ehime mbano local govt area of imo state. due to the harsh behavior of his step mother. His weakling father rejected him. And their was a standing order that any child that didn't see his or her parent should be returned back to gabon. on get back to Gabon he was adopted by the said president then. And the rest was history. mind u it was a biafran soldier with the gabonesse unit the came back an told the villagers the fate of the child. since everybody knew how the wicked step mother persuaded the husband to reject him.

Not saying that this story is true, but 'Ali' is an Igbo name, in western and Eastern parts of Igboland, Land is 'Ali', instead of Ani/Ana/Ala used in central parts of Igboland. In Ikwerre and Ogba, Land is 'Ali' too.

There was this popular Igbo musician from Aboh Ukwuani that was named Ali Chukwuma.

Like i said before, i am not saying that Bongo is an Igbo man, just clearing the 'Ali' ish.

LIBREVILLE - In Gabon, clashes broke out between police and the opposition questioning the legitimacy of President Ali Bongo. This comes after French writer Pierre Péan's controversial book accusing Bongo of falsifying his birth certificate. French writer and journalist, Pierre Péan, recently
released his controversial book called "New African Affairs".
In the book, the author claims President Ali Bongo has Nigerian origins and was brought from Biafra during the Nigerian civil war in the 1960’s. The book claims that he was adopted by the late president Omar Bongo.
This has caused tension in Gabon.
According to the country’s constitution, no persons born to foreign parents can become president.
The book also accuses the Gabonese leader of presenting a false birth certificate to qualify for the 2009 presidential elections.
The opposition has demanded that he produce his birth certificate, or take a DNA test to prove that he is the son of Omar Bongo.
"We did not say anything serious except the truth. We didn't say anything except the birth certificate that he produced was false,” said Jean Ping, former Chairman of the AU Commission. It was a forgery and a falsehood. They marched to a courthouse in Libreville, but
clashes soon broke out with police. It seems like Ali Bongo is not Gabonese goal

bombarded by tear gas. The Gabonese government has described the allegations as rumours and is threatening to file a lawsuit against the journalist.

The Ali in his name is a muslim name,and not the Igbo one, his father converted to Islam at some point before he died.

But the 'Ondimba' part of their family name is quite close to the Igbo name 'Odimba'. Any one who understands Bateke here?
