NIGERIANS have been asked to beware of the kind of vegetable oil they will buy during the coming Sallah and Xmas. This is because a dangerous brand of vegetable oil is currently sea-bound and may arrive in Nigeria any moment.

This was disclosed by the Secretary General, National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE), Mr. I.G. Yusuf, who urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to be on the alert over the dangerous vegetable oil.

Speaking at a press conference at the union secretariat in Lagos, the secretary general said the vegetable oil was extracted from animals and was already on the high sea heading for Nigeria.

According to the union scribe, “our finding has shown that the animal oil is not fit for human consumption. Its consumption can cause cancer.There is no justification for importing this oil into the country when there is no shortage of the product in our market.

“The government is not only killing the local industries, but also toying with the health of Nigerians. It needs to get its priority right and protect its citizens from unnecessary exposure to deadly product like animal oil and as well ensure job security for Nigerians working in vegetable oil companies,” he said.

Also confirming the development, President of the association, Mr. Lateef Oyelekan, stated that the vegetable oil was actually meant for industrial use and not for human consumption.

He, therefore, urged the government to quickly ensure that such type of vegetable oil did not enter the market.
