2 Months At Home , Fed Poly Oko Students Write Apology Letter To Rector by Leadn(m): 1:10pm On Nov 18, 2014 |
The Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra state schooling activities have been on a lock down for over 2 months now, citing a decision by the schools authority to descipline students for insulting the rector, Prof. Godwin Onu. The polytechnic which sprang into normal activities after ASUP’s prolonged strike July of this year, went ahead to conclude the previous academic session, rush over 2nd semester exams and begin a new academic session. Normal activities were thought to have began in earnest, until the SUG elections which saw all candidates for SUG president dis-qualified and a female (who won the vice-president of the student union government) was unanimously announced winner of the election, started a new episode of the sorrows of students. The birth of CBT examinations in Oko Following the imposition of a female as the SUG president, the Rector of the Polytechnic Professor Godwin Onu, decided to implement the computer based system of taking examinations, which have originally been refused by the students of the institution, citing time management, hanging computers as reasons for refusing the use of computers for taking examinations. However, this time all pleas fell on deaf ears of Rector of the institution, who insisted examinations must be held using computers. Angry students who felt the rector was being a dictator decided to voice their displeasure, disconnecting his speech with chants of “we no go gree”, “no cbt” and that was how everything started. According to our source, the rector of the polytechnic angrily left the gathering and vowed to deal with the students. A few days later, the school management posted on the notice boards within the school that the ND 2 and HND 2 of the polytechnic were going to embark on 3weeks suspension. The suspension was duely carried out and ended on 12th of November, which was supposed to be the new date of exams for the school. Unfortunately, on resumption, the Rector of the polytechnic decided to “deal” with a select departments, asking them to go and write an apology letter, a letter of undertaking, and ask key people in the school to sign including the school’s anti-cult, the chief security officer of the school, their respective HOD’s, their respective Deans, and the bursar of the institution, after which they invite their parents to come to the school for “briefing”. Other students of the school are asked to pay their fees before sitting for their examinations. Students of the polytechnic have been in their various hostels and lodges for well over 2 months without engaging in any schooling activity and are bitterly complaining of the situation of the school, which is keeping prospective graduates from leaving the school environment on schedule. When we tried to contact the school for comment, we were told the Rector of the school travelled to India and only he has the power to discuss the issue at hand. http://gistscrib.com/2-months-at-home-federal-polytechnic-oko-students-write-apology-letter-to-rector-no-exams-till-further-notice/ |
