Goitre is an Iodine Deficiency Disorder, common in Nigeria, but not a serious public health issue. Other disorders of iodine deficiency include;
Miscarriage, cretinism, stillbirths, congenital anomalies, increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, endemic cretinism, neonatal goitre, endemic mental retardation, hypothyroidism, retarded physical development, hyperthyroidism, increased susceptibility to nuclear radiation, et cetera.
All these deficiency issues of iodine can be curbed if our women are able to take enough iodine in their diet during and after pregnancy, give their infants exclusive breastfeeding; eating iodised salt, iodine fortified milk and bread, sea foods, certain vegetables.
Its good to prevent goitre than treating it. And this is done by eating well. However, some people may still be iodine deficient due to their cooking method.

Visit a medical doctor who specializes in metabolic disorders. Let it be made known here that goitre in simple terms, is a physiological response by the body to obtain iodine which is in insufficient levels in the blood, leading to the increased vascularization ot the tissues in the anterior neck neck region, where the thyroid glands lie. This 'hyper-vascularised' tissue, will not likely go down, except by surgery.
The surgery to excise the mass of cells cloged at the neck, is an option, if the goitre is embarassing. This has social and health advantages, when we want to refer to the stigmatization. Meanwhile, it can result in the growth of cancerous cells, and obstrution of breathing.
Again, back to its prevention. Do you know that in Nigeria, no one should be iodine deficient, except if there are other inflicting factors? The reason is this, there are iodised salts all over the place.
So, cook with iodised salts, in satchet- this will reduce the evaporation of iodine.
