Who told you that? In this 21st century its only parents that still live in stone age that cn do that. It was then when parents believed that the woman will have inheritance in her husband's house, but now both genders are treated almost equally or equally. |

Girls shouldn't smell inheritance because most times the inheritance is their fathers (male) and should go to the MALE not feMALE. I support it, it is good. 1 Like |

Well, female children of customary law marriage are usually denied a share in der late fathers property. But dis only happens wen he dies intestate(witout writing will) but wia he dies testate(wrote will)and gvs his daughter a share den she wil benefit. Dou dey are entitled to der late fathers economic trees planted in the family land,if reserved for family use. ONYANKPA V BALA AKOGWU. Wia d father dies intestate,d brothers cn favour d sister by catering for her needs. but dis is not so in yoruba land. But d court in MOJEKWU V EJIKEME has tried to change dis discrimination against d females as it contravenes a section in d contituiton.(Sorry cnt rmba d exact section and am not wia I cn check it) |

it depends, as for me, i dont see any reason sharing the landed properties i have in my village among my Sons and Daughters. All my lands and house located in my village would be shared among my Sons only, because once my daughers are married they have know business in the village... Now for my properties in CITY eg Asaba, Lagos PH, definitly my Daughter are entitle to those properties because those areas are civilized, those are the places where people do business.... So my Daughters would have there shares of my properties in the city and do what ever business they want with it. Just imagine i give my Daughter 2 acres of land in my village, i mean were this land is located, its in a thick forest. tell me, what time would she have to go to her fathers village? not to mention she going to inspect if the two acres is still there. But when such lands is given to the male children, since that place is there root, they would always go to the village for one ceremony or for xmas. But you all know everybody stays in the city, so all my Daughters must have there portion of any of my properties in the city. This is the little i know of for now..... 3 Likes |

The girl child won't inherit her father's properties but she will most definitely inherit most or all of her mother's properties which are sometimes one of her father's possessions which he gave to her mother. When she gets married to a man, her husband would give her some of his possession (mostly land and livestock ) and build a hot for her. The girl child's inherits her husband's possession and not her father's because she will drop her father's name for her husband's. this I believe was a way to encourage young men to strive to be successful before getting married and not rely on the wealth of your father in-law.. Now in some igbo tradition (mostly the abiriba ) the son doesn't even inherit anything from his father, his only inheritance is his mother's properties. and this I learned was because a certain boy who was pursued by some people (probably to kill) instead of him running into his father's hot, he ran into his mother's hot nd was saved, so people were like... since he choose his mother's hot instead of his father's, his inheritance will only come from his mother's possession. *someone from abiriba should give us more details concerning this story * |

This scnerio is prevalent in the South East But I've seen a lot of ladies both married and unmarried in the South West that inherited their parents properties. I think it's a culture thing that should be looked into |

Yoruba females have always had equal rights. We've had female Yoruba rulers before European invasions.......Yoruba queens without king. Being a female in Yorubaland is not a hardship........having overprotective male family members is the problem 1 Like |

Because their parents sell them off by collecting bride price.. And their duty is to give birth to make children who will inherit their husbands property and give birth to female children who will get married and give birth to male children's that will inherit their husbands property. |

Cos they believe that women will marry and leave. Tgey do not want them to take family property to another man who may sell it or claim it as its believed that a man owns the woman and all she owns. So they believe by denying women they are saving family wealth and heritage from being transfered to another family(husbands). Even widows are denied properties by deceased husbands family esp if they choose to remary outside the family. |
