Umana Umana Vows to crush Akpanudoedehe in APC Primaries. ... Labels Former Senator A Tout. Ahead of his planned defection to the All PProgressives Congress (APC), an Akwa Ibom State gubernatorial aspirant, Mr Umana Okon Umana has vowed to take total control of his new party from the leader of the party in the state, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, to actualize his governorship ambition. At a strategy meeting on Sunday night in his palatial Ewet Housing mansion with some political associates to perfect his defection, Mr Umana is said to have informed them that with his donation of five hundred million naira (N500 million) to the Leader of his new party in Lagos, he has been assured the total control of the structure of the party in the state. According to our source who was present at the strategy meeting, Mr Umana is said to have told his audience that he had offered Senator Akpanudoedehe another five hundred million naira (N500 million) to drop his political ambition, but that the former Senator had insisted on a whopping one billion naira (N1 billion), a position Mr Umana described as “greedy” and vowed to run him out of the party. The source who pleaded anonymity quoted Mr Umana as saying; “We had many options but the most appealing was to defect to the APC. This is because the party has promised to hand over their propaganda machinery to me. A South-South Governor on the platform of the party has also promised to assist in some logistics. “But the most formidable obstacle was how to handle my brother Senator Akpanudoedehe who has been the arrowhead of opposition in the state. At a meeting with our Leader in Lagos, I was asked to offer him N500 million as settlement but surprisingly the former Senator demanded a whopping N1 billion. “Nevertheless, after my donation of N500 million to the Leader of the party, I have been assured that I will crush him in the forth- coming primaries and have a total control of the structure of the party. As for the main election the South-South Governors have promised to liaise with the Army and Police for necessary action to enable us win” Umana is quoted to have said. Confirming the development, Mr Iboro Otongaran, Media Adviser to Mr Umana said it was the intention of his boss to take charge in his new party but denied the donation of N500 million to the Leader of the party. “First and foremost, election in Nigeria is a capital intensive project. And running against the candidate of a ruling party means you must be financially capable. It is not just about gathering a few thugs in Uyo and claiming you are the Leader of the party in the state. With due respect, the man you are talking about does not have the financial muscle to successfully prosecute a gubernatorial election, Udoedehe is a mere tout. “I am not sure of the amount you have mentioned, but I know Mr Umana has made some donations towards strengthening the party across the nation to give the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a run for her money,” Mr Otongaran said. However supporters of Senator Akpanudoedehe have vowed to resist the hijack of the party structure by Mr Umana through money politics. A Youth Leader, Comrade Emem Frank said in the event that Mr Umana “crushed” Senator Akpanudoedehe as promised, their camp would be favourably disposed towards working for the candidate of any other party apart from the APC. He said that Umana should rather go for the Uyo Senate seat in APC and join forces with Udoedehe rather than fighting him. Bassey Ubokudom Etinan, Akwa Ibom State |
