There are fourteen districts in Kerala. Kerala is blessed by Mother Nature. There are hill stations, backwater systems, rivers, beaches and wildlife sanctuaries. This state is nestled between the Western Ghats and Arabian Sea. A major part is still covered by dense and evergreen forests. This forms an ideal habitat for the wild animals and birds.

Kerala has always been a favorite tourist destination. It is now a center for ecotourism too. There are a number of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks here that are home to a number of wild animals. Somee of the important ones are the Silent valley National Park, Wayanad National Park and Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is located in Thekkady in Idukki district. Idukki district is a landlocked district in the southern part of the state. More than 50% of this district is covered by dense forests. Idukki district is the main power generating district. More than 66% of the state’s power is supplied by the hydel power projects in Idukki district.

This is nestled in the Periyar forests where the River Pamba originates. The wildlife sanctuary was declared as a Tiger reserve in 1978. The spice plantations are close by. This adds beauty to the place. The wildlife sanctuary is spread over an area of 777 sq kms. Out of this, 360 sq kms of area is dense forest that is the favorite haven for the elephants. This is the best place to view the elephants. The dense forests, greenery, diverse wildlife and scenic beauty attract people from all over the world. Another interesting aspect of this sanctuary is the Periyar lake. This artificial lake is formed by the Mullaiperiyar dam built across the Periyar River.  This lake is spread across 26sq kms. The tourism and forest department has arranged for boat cruises on the river. This is an amazing and a safe way of watching the wildlife. The visit to the wildlife sanctuary is not complete without seeing the herd of elephants playing in the Periyar Lake.
