Aliyu Mohammed went on to say that the President had ordered the arrest of the chief of staff to Rivers State Governor Peter Odili to warn the latter away from seeking the vice presidential nomination himself.[/b]

Don't you think the reason here might simply be that people would feel more compelled, morally, to defend a late president who is not around to defend himself, than a living and serving president who, apart from being around to defend himself, also has a well-oiled PR machinery (and much more!) to defend him?
