There is no doubt that Africa has come a long way in the use of the social media in recent times. With the coming of new technologies, Africans have found adapting to these changes very quickly and perhaps that accounts for why there are so many Africans on social media platforms. The use of a site like Facebook for instance is on the high side, recent statics shows that there are thirteen million (13m) Facebook users from Egypt, South Africa has about nine million, four hundred thousand (9.4m) while Nigeria has five million, three hundred thousand (5.3m) users.

With these astounding figures, it is unarguable that the social media is a veritable tool for social and economic development in any given country. Asides the growth of the use of technology by African countries, the entertainment industry has witnessed tremendous growth. African entertainers now have international recognition and many of them have gotten international award nominations with some of them going on to win. Musicians like D Banj, Wizkid, Fuse ODG, R2bees, 2 Face, Davido and actors such as Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Desmond Elliot, Van Vicker, Majid Michael Nadia Buhari, Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde to mention but a few have been able to achieve international super star status.

Looking at the growth of all these entertainers, it is safe to say that they all have a strong social media presence which has been able to help them connect with their fans from across the globe. Wizkid for instance holds the highest number of twitter followers; Genevieve Nnaji is the female celebrity with the highest number of twitter followers in Nigeria while Omotola Jalade Ekeinde was the first celebrity to hit a million likes on Facebooks. Looking at these, one would wonder why these celebrities who everyone knows usually have busy schedules would waste their time on social media platforms. The answer to this is very simple; the power of the social media cannot be underestimated.

Careers have been made or marred on the social media, fans can ..........
