I tot this was a job forum, instead you guys are having swacks at each other, i believe every one is entitled to his own opinion. if dutty whatever, thinks everyone else but himself is a dumb ass. he should prove it but setting a realistic target for himself like getting the cream de la cream job for himself in say 1 year, then he would no that grades only get as far as an aptitude test. NOT THE JOB ITSELF.

duttyarb, Will you learn and stop being naughty. Many posters, experienced guys for that matter, have advised you to stop living in fantasy. There is more to life than you are presently seeing. In our daily reflections, we should look at life from both the physical and the spiritual. Life they say is what we make of it. There are people who did not attend the University yet the are living very fine through their efforts and ingenuity. There are also those who are even willing to grab third class if the opportunity is there for them. Therefore for someone who went to to the ivory tower to study, I think, is a remarkable achievement. From my personal experience grades only counts if you want to remain in someone's employ throughout your life. As far as I am concerned, in anything we found ourselves doing, put in your best, remain focused and determined and leave the rest to God. There are people who got distinctions but could not live to enjoy same. When there is life, there is hope

I think the idea of setting up nairaland job section is to help people get job, whether 1st class, 2.1, 2.2 or any other grade. please if any body does not have information that will help people, let such person stop contributing on this forum instead of posting information that will discourage others who are seriously searching for jobs.
dattybarb thinks that getting a job is the end of it all, it is not, in the labour market what makes one successful is not just the paper qualification but ur ability to be creative and bring out the best in you, matters a lot.

Realy, I cannot see d puporse of dis topic, but I can tell you that I got 2.2 form UI in Petroleum Engineering, I got a job and doing very well with myself. After my NYSC I search 4 job 4 good 11 months. but 2day I realy thank Almighty God. I have many friends that got 2.1 yet I assist them to get a job. dey are all ok. Just make sure that watever you get u can defend it at all time.

I hate to disappoint you, as an HR Consultant, i have come across a lot of 1st class and 2.1 candidates who cannot string together an intelligent sentence at interviews and 3rd class candidates who are articulate and very bright. i have seen a lot of 1st class still writing 'i beg to apply' and 3rd class holding managers supervising and heading a team of 2.1 holding subordinates. there are also people i am managing who finished with 2.1 but are very poor performers on the job.

Its only in Nigeria that i see employees depend wholly on what a piece of paper says. I worked in the UK for a while, and employers there are more concerned about experience and potential abilities than a piece of paper that says 1st class or 2.1.

i will advice you to get rid of that smug attitude, especially at interviews, it wont get you too far.
i do congratulate you on finishing with a 1st or 2.1, do not rest on your oars, the sky is just the beginning, and to those still in school PLEASE do not finish with a third, you wont be doing yourself any favours. all the best to everyone on this page.

This is the best post in all, I feel the person who stated this topic should be advising and not braging about what grade he/she finished with. There is more to life than university grades, there are those with 1st class without VISION.therefore have no headway. Thats not to say you should not do well or finish with good grades. The fact that you finished with a third class does not make you a failure in Life.
Some people buy the so called 1st class and can't prove them selves in the real world. Have you not seen a graduate with 1st class in computer science/engineering yet can not operate a computer or know the components of a PC yet a small boy in OTIGBA (computer Villa) wey no go school!! can assemble a PC from scratch.
Its all about God helping you.

Thats the issue here cos most of us graduate think work work work, when there are other little things we could lay our hands on to make a decent leaving.

I am sure your post has received enough responses from Nairalanders, but am sure more bashing will still come for your 'uncoordinated' advise.

From my own point of view, many things are at play when you are in school, if you are the type that pass through the school and the school didn't pass through you, you will find some things hard in life when you face the real world and i guess you belong to this category and these are the type of students that use the what i call TRIANGLE life cycle while on campus,Hostel to Class,Class to library,Library to Hostel round the whole semester.

And the funny thing about them is that they still remain Childish because you see them hiding their assignments from coursemates,they never participate in anything. There is even this particular lady in my class that do hide the textbook she used for her assignment so that others wont use the same book by keeping the textbook in another subject/course shelf until when we have submitted that particular assignment. See how childish she was

And there are types that will use their body to get the 2.1, but ask them to do something, Come see wahala.But at the end of the semester,you see them scoring B's, Even to contribute meaningfully during lectures or tutorials, nbanu, they are empty.

Some people end up with a 3rd class due to lots of reasons, it is not necessarily that they are empty brainwise but a lot of things are at play,emotional stuff,bad company,and the main problem is Finance. To even get a 2.1 in some schools na war!

And lastly Dutty, Which school did you attend?

Grades to me dont realy matter.

the condition and situation in which we all study in school is not the same.
someone that finds it difficult to get fees and virtually lives from hand to mouth might not been in the best frame of mind to read

Check people that really made mark in life never had GOOd grades, bill gate, wlos shoyinka , femei falana, albert einstein, gani fawehimi, all these people never came out with good grade one had to drop out of school.

Grades are just mere incriptions on paper, that is true, but only true to the extent that employees look for and prefer people with Upper(That is the fact) You can try applying to KPMG or Accenture and you will see what i am saying. In as much as you cannot change it after you have graduated, there is need to hammer on the pursuit of excellence especially for the folks still in school. They have to "Hammer 2:1" Believe me it saves from all these Labour market thing though not 100% but at least you stand a chance against all "these people" who have thier children alredy sorted out!

As for me i have nenefited form it and : i preach it, May God help us all

All of una dey make a point. However, a word is enough for the wise. I go tell una my experience.
I graduated and served like 10 years ago with a 2.2. I didn't have any kind of connections. First 6 months was hell, even so-called connections wey I get dey tell me say with 2.2, it was like I didn't go to school. However, to cut tory, I started with a small job and worked my way up. Now I work a top job in telecoms, but it wasn't easy. Na grace of Baba loke.
My wife graduated with 2.1 with no connection. She got a job during NYSC for bank, she no spend 3 months before she nack oil company work, where she dey till today.
My point? Na only God sabi wetin go happen, but the truth is, statistically, better grade + better course dey help. Some of una study social studies edu dey yarn say una get 2.1 (lol)
For those homies wey still dey school, if you no dey the 1st or 2.1 bracket, well, that's life, but if you fit make am try oh. It does help because this country no dey really cut nobody any slack. Gba be!
, and as a parting shot, no be say I dey yab anybody, but I personallly believe say na lazy coots dey always refer to Gates, Soyinka, Gani, etc, etc. You better work hard oh. How many people get the intellect of Gates, or Soyinka's writing skill, or even Gani's diehard attitude? Make una dey console unaself there, instead of trying to do your best. Na wa.

Where you got your First Class or 2.1 will determine the worth.

A First Class from LASU is not the same class as a First Class from Columbia University.

I think what you come out from skool matters nowadays, its really worth the effort, if u can study hard and make your 2.1 of first class kudos! but if that doesn't come cheap, your skills come in place, what you have to offer, what can you contribute, how smart are you and so on. getting out of school, u have to prove your mettle out there! mightt not be what you carry afterall
