Excitement is gradually building up in the city of Lagos, Nigeria’s
commercial nerve-center, as it prepares to host top stakeholders in the
African football community at the 2014 Glo-CAF Awards. Since the Confederation of African Football announced in October this year
that Lagos, Nigeria, will host the prestigious Gala nite of the 2014 Glo- Caf
Awards, sponsors and organizers of the event, Globacom said that plans are
afoot to stage a memorable Glo-Caf Awards for the third time in Lagos since
the inception of the awards. Globacom, in a press statement in Lagos on Wednesday, said that “the Glo-
CAF Awards 2014 will parade the greatest African football legends, including
the new African Footballer of the Year and winners in 12 other categories.”
The categories include African Player of The Year (Based in Africa), National
Team of The Year, Club of The Year, and Coach of The Year. Other categories are Women’s National Team of The Year, Women’s
Footballer of The Year, Most Promising Talent, Referee of The Year, Legend of
The year, Fair Play Award, Platinum Award – Single nominee, and Africa
Finest XI.
Yaya Toure of Cote d’ivoire and a mid-fielder with Manchester City Football
Club, England is the current African champion. The event is expected to congregate top football celebrities across Africa, as
well as top government officials from Nigeria, Ghana and other parts of
Africa, the statement said. As usual, the Awards and possible winners have been the subject of
discussions in the media and among football fans and youth across Africa.
The list of twenty-five top contenders for the 2014 African Footballer of the
Year and twenty nominees for Africa Footballer of the Year (Africa-based)
was released by Confederation of African Football last week.
Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, was the host of the inaugural edition of Glo-Caf Awards in 2005 followed by Accra, Ghana in 2006; Lome, Togo hosted the
2007 edition while the event was held in Lagos, Nigeria, for the first time in
2008 before it moved back to Accra in 2009. Cairo, the capital of Egypt
hosted the 2010 edition.
The event was held back-to-back in Accra, Ghana between 2011 and 2012
while Lagos hosted the 2013 Edition.

Ex-internationals and former Super Eagles
Captains, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha and Kanu
Nwankwo will be among the generation of
old Super Eagles’ players who will attend the
2014 Glo-CAF Awards gala night coming up
on 8th January in Lagos, Nigeria.
In a statement from the organisers of the
awards, Globacom, Okocha and two former
African Footballers of the year, Nwankwo
Kanu and Victor Nosa Ikpeba, are expected
to grace the awards aptly labeled the Oscars
of African football.
It is believed that their presence at the event
would spur younger football players to
greater height.
Okocha distinguished himself playing with
Einthract Frankfurt FC of Germany,
Fenerbache of Turkey, Paris St Germain of
France and Bolton Wanderers of England. He
is noted for his flamboyant skills and
dribbles on the pitch. A two-time winner of

honoured with the Legends Award along
with Ex-Moroccan International Mustapha
Hadji at the 2011 Glo-CAF Awards.

Vincent Enyeama has
been voted as the Goal
Nigeria Player of the Year
2014 , winning the award
courtesy of
overwhelming votes from readers of the
website.
The Lille and Super Eagles goalkeeper led the
field that included illustrious compatriots
Ahmed Musa, Obafemi Martins, Mfon Udoh
and Ikechukwu Uche with an overwhelming
55 percent of votes cast between December
1-5, 2014.
A joyful Enyeama, 32, accepted the award at
his club in France on Monday morning.
“I’m happy, really happy,” he enthused. “I
want to thank my teammates at Lille, the
Nigeria national team, my coaches, my wife,
my fans, everybody who voted for me, who
scream for me during matches to encourage
me. And the journalists, without
which nothing will be possible.”
Enyeama is only the second player to win the
Goal Nigeria Player of the Year award
following John Obi Mikel’s dominance in the
past two years.
“I think it’s really hard for a goalkeeper to be
recognized. I want to say to all the other
goalkeepers that they have to work hard. If
they work hard, with God, everything is
possible,” he said.
Coming off a season in France where he kept
clean sheets in 21 matches (with 11
consecutive shut outs), the Super Eagles
number one has got big dreams.
“I want to win every match. Everyday, I give
my best to be better than yesterday,” he said.
“My target [is] to be the best goalkeeper in the
world. This is my dream, and I’m working
hard for this.
“In Nigeria, we have worked on basics and
specific things. Our coach [Stephen] Keshi is
very important.
“At Lille, Jean Pierre Mottet is very helpful too.
They really helped to shape me, to shape my
style, to make me who I am, a good
goalkeeper.
“I’m not yet at my best level, I have many
things to work out,” he said.
The World Cup was very momentous for
Enyeama who led the Super Eagles to the
Round of 16 for the first time since 1998.
Even though he finds it hard to choose his
most memorable save, he remembers with
glee the late save which ensured the African
champions kept all three points against
Bosnia-Herzegovina in hot Cuiaba and crucially
kept them in place for a second round ticket.
“The most memorable save, it’s very difficult to
say because there were so many matches, so
many saves in my career.
Sometimes double saves, triple saves in a
match… I can’t really choose one. But if I had
to choose one moment, I think it was the last
minute save against Bosnia,” he said. goal.com
