According to the dictionary, self-control is the ability to control one’s desires, impulses and willpower.

Self-control very vital and necessary in every action we take, and yet we ignore it in almost every opportunity we get to exercise it. Whenever we interact with others, we loose it almost every time. Everyday interactions are contracts we wish is brokered, and self-control is needed to ensure its success.
Some everyday contracts includes, negotiation and bargaining, making new friends, asking for favours, trying to sell to customers, giving instructions to our workers and relaying messages to co-workers, advising our children, communicating with spouses and so many more. Don’t forget, contract involves an action agreed to be carried out between two or more people. An offer is made, an acceptance occurs, and an agreed action is carried out by the necessary party/parties. Yet, while this sounds very simple enough, many of our contracts don’t get through to the expected or agreed stage. Many are breached through abandonment due to many factors including abandonment, disagreement, wrong delivery, and so on; yet, so many didn’t see the major reason for our lack of success as lack of self-control.

How?

Because we couldn’t endure anymore. Many of us had talked back at the wrong person who in turn pulled out of a major dealing. We have refused to go on with a deal because differ in races, languages, point of view, and the likes. We have talked back at people who fired us, fired our most efficient worker because we are angry at their persisted behavior. Many of us had agreed on a deal in a rush only to regret it. We believed if we had held on a little longer, we would have gotten a better deal. And it is more annoying knowing it is true; we should have held on. Many of us did businesses without taking the time and pain for research. We completely abandon feasibility studies and just went on right ahead because we believed it will work because it worked for David.
To make us successful, and stay successful, self-control is very vital. Let us see how it helps to be strong in it.

1. IT HELPS TO OVERCOME OBSESSION AND KILLER-ATTITUDES; IT ALSO HELPS TO ADOPT, AND SUSTAIN THE ONES YOU NEEDED FOR THE YOUR SUCCESS.
Some attitudes are negative to the survival of our business. Some can’t do without some attitudes like; anger, sex, frowning and talking back when being advised, being vindictive, envy, fear, and many others mentioned in one of my articles titled “little forces that ensures your success won’t last”(please try and go through it here).
Obsessions includes, watching TV, getting drunk, sex, eating too much, playing games, trust, lack of trust, and so on.

These actions are not necessarily bad, but they are when they become dangerous to your success and you can’t just help not indulging in them. This is where self-control helps because all of these could be avoided completely, minimized or controlled only with self-control. Then you can avoid exactly those behaviours that are not vital, or adopt those that are vital to your success.

Self-control simply means self-discipline, and possessing this is why you can drop the bad ones and sustain the good ones you decided to pick up for you survival. Most people wanted to try and loose weight, but they won’t stop eating everything, they can’t fast or keep up a healthy eating habit.

2. KEEPS YOU IN TOTAL CONTROL
Here, we are not asking anyone to be a control freak in control of others, but to be in control of every situation you found yourself. You are, like they use to say, ‘on top of the matter’. You smile when expected to go angry, be calm when you are expected to go into full rage, and many more. You just won’t loose it at any time or anywhere because you are the one controlling your reactions and not your attitude controlling how you react. The media will have to find it very difficult, trying to pin a statement on you, the ones you didn’t make when you got angry, or the ones your sacked worker couldn’t say you said. You don’t fall victim of unnecessary scandal or rush in taking decisions when brokering a deal.

Your decision-making ability will be graced with much efficacy in its delivery. You become a total thinker, wise and responsible. Your word becomes a signature people could rely on, and you are bound only for higher things. You become examples for the ones who loose it, or do it the wrong way.

3. IT STRENGTHENS YOUR ABILITY TO ENDURE
Endurance and success goes a long way, but endurance is never possible without self-control. Many people will abandon their businesses and sell them during hard times only to regret seeing them flourish even where they have envisaged they will only fail. Some wanted to start making millions the next month their business started. I hope it works that way, but it probably wouldn’t. Our new business, or even the old one needs care to survive the hard times; it needs our time, passion, attention, and confidence.

There are many wise men that specialize in buying expired domain names, liquidated companies, and such of the likes only to turn them around for the best. Those men who succeeded are rich in self-control while the others that sold off only to regret later lack self-control.

Endurance makes you endure annoying individuals who poked you just to get provoked. They know that your negative reaction becomes a gain to them and disappointing them by exercising self-control is the best way to win over them. You will also get tagged as being matured, responsible and a role model. People see you as a positive influence and you know nothing but success since people are your friend.

4. IT HELPS TO SUSTAIN YOUR SUCCESS
Your success needs to be sustained through good management, and this will never be possible without restraint from certain material desires and lusts. Many guys turned Casanova the moment they could hold on to some bills. They throw parties they’ve longed for and focused on material things they wish they had while their business screams for expansion or change. They couldn’t control their envy and so they turned themselves into wistful spenders, buying better things than their supposedly rivals.

Many will embrace pride immediately they perceived success and everything goes over their head. They are unable to control themselves and they talk anyhow, act anyhow, think anyhow, transact anyhow and every other things done as they deemed fit. They become uncontrollable and unruly. They are no more in control of their actions, and they will start picking up behaviours that are detrimental not only to their business, but also, to their health.

Self-control is very necessary in our everyday living, as this, itself is business. It is an art that could be learnt and mastered. We should be able to wield it to our own advantage for our survival in the business world.
