Yes. I do have food alergies from time to time. I must take septrin anytime I drink garri,to avoid bad breath and sore throat/itchy throat and ears. Eba makes me stool and causes me stomach trouble. Groundnut, walnut, coconut, etc gives me same alergic reactions like I get when I drink garri. Any food not properly made and prepared hygienically, has a way of affecting me. Sometimes,it could come out as rashes on my skin. That's why I hardly open my mouth to eat outside my house. When hungry,I do more of snacks. vikel2104: |

NoToPile: what's an allergy? Allergy - a definition . Allergy occurs when a person's immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless for most people. These substances are known as allergens and are found in house dust mites, pets, pollen, insects, moulds, foods and some medicines. if you a food and it make you vomit, I mean every time you eat that particular food.......what do you call that..lemme guess "food poisoning" 1 Like |

The problem is that most Africans don't eat varieties for them to know they have allergies. We eat a lot of carbohydrates. The truth now is that allergies are present among all races and colors. |

Our problem in this part of the world is that we don't document at all. I'm allergic to peanuts and okra soup (they cause serious rashes). It took many years before it was discovered. Moreover, I'm also allergic to a common drug. The allergic reaction could kill in 2 days. Hence, be careful. It could be disastrous to blindly conclude that Nigerians don't react because our immunity is strong and because these cases are hardly reported. 1 Like |

Yes many Nigerians have allergies but ignorance and lack of quality medical facilities make us attribute the effects to other causes. In fact, many disorders of respiratory and digestive system arise are as a result of allergy. This reminds me of a man suffering from GIT problems, after visiting the local clinic several times and he couldn't find solution, he also sought traditional solutions all to know avail. He subsequently went to stay with his daughter in Lagos and surprisingly all his symptoms disappeared within a short period of time. It was later discovered that his predicaments was as a result of peanut he regularly eats in the village, mind you, he has been eating peanuts for most part of his life without experiencing any problem. 1 Like |
