More stories and pics after the cut... 17-year-old student of Bowen University, Opeyemi Odusanya was killed by some cult members in Lagos on Feburary 3, 2014. She was stabbed to death for allegedly rejecting sexual advances from some youths in the area and also as she was insinuated “being too proud.” According to reports, the deceased went to buy airtime for her phone, as she was returning, a group of boys trailed and entered the house with her. Opeyemi was alone at home when the boys attacked her, they instructed her to turn on the generator (obviously to douse every intent to call for help or scream.) It was believed that they wanted to rape the girl, and she must have put up a severe struggle as the whole house was scattered. The guys subsequently stabbed her in the stomach several times and ripped out her intestines. After killing her, they took her phone and the keys to her parents’ SUV and made away with it. Opeyemi’s phone to send a text message to her mother, explaining why she had been killed. The text read “Your child has been proud. We have been toasting her, but she has refused to accept. We have killed her to teach a lesson. We have also driven your car away, if you want your car back, come to Lakas Hotel or Cele Bus Stop around Mile 2 to pick it up. If we see policemen around, we will kill everybody.” After she read the text, she returned home to meet her daughter’s lifeless body, By all indications, the girl was not raped because her clothes were intact, “the weapon of murder had been recovered,” said the police but the suspect are still at-large.

Former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and ex minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili, died on June 7, 2014 in an India hospital where she was receiving treatment for cancer. Akunyili took her medical check-ups abroad seriously as she was given an all well result most often. Early 2013 she was energetic and looked robust, even took up another government job as the Minister of Information and Communications. On July 13, 2013 something strange happened to her; she was preparing to travel to the United States to receive an award, (the following day was her 59 birthday.) Then she fell ill, became physically weak and had severe pains. She decided to go ahead with her trip and attend to her health in the United States. She did have a check, cancer was detected. Ofcourse, that was no good news but confirmed the 1998 diagnosis was correct even though at the point of surgery was considered false. Afterwards, everything changed because cancer seems to have known end. She became seriously ill, and was in the hospital for months and returned to Nigeria this year, and her last public appearance was at the National Conference in Abuja. Soon pictures of a frail-looking Akumyili went viral on the internet. The Cable could not ascertain the type of cancer, but there were several reports pinpointing to cervical cancer, although they were other claims that it was ovarian. Globally, cervical cancer is the second most common and the fifth deadliest cancer in women according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). She died at age 59.

Multiple award-winning gospel singer, Kefee Don Momoh died on Friday 13 August, 2014. She passed on in the early hours, after being in coma for weeks in an undisclosed American hospital. The singer, who was reportedly pregnant, fell into a coma while on a flight to Chicago, in the United States of America. The plane had to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles so she could receive medical attention. Watch her video a day before she fell into coma ‘So sad, this has got to be one of the saddest moments in my life. There should be some corrections though. She was on a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago, but she collapsed and was taken to a hospital in Las Vegas. She died in Vegas but she didn’t die of pregnancy complications. I was with her the day before she collapsed. She had been in Los Angeles already. She performed at Gospel Faith Mission House of Testimony on Sunday. The next day, Monday, she was shooting a music video in Hollywood, CA. I was one of her camera guys. She seemed fine that day, and I could see nothing wrong with her at all. She was happy, smiling, dancing, laughing and enjoying herself.

The long standing Nollywood actor Clems Onyeka was killed by over 8 suspected armed robbers who stormed Asaba in a commando-style on 14th October, 2014. They reportedly trailed a bullion van from the Benin/Asaba Express way through the Summit road and intercepted it along the DBS road before U&I Foundation, where they engaged the police escort team in a fierce gun battle. This is Claims Onyeka’s message to someone 2 weeks before the incident: “My brother, I enjoy your column so much but nothing has ever been done on me yet, or are you waiting until I am dead before you write about me?” he queried and got replied, “Clems give me something good to write about you and I will do it”.

Joan Rivers was a regular panelist on E!’s Fashion Police and co-starred in a reality series with her daughter Melissa on WE, called Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? A prolific stand-up comic, she is perhaps most widely known for her acerbic (and occasionally controversial) red carpet interviews and talking heads stints for TV Guide and E!, often accompanied by Melissa. Rivers’ breakout role was as a guest on The Tonight Show in 1965. Rivers was briefly placed into a medically-induced coma in late August following complications from vocal cord surgery, when she stopped breathing. After being brought of the coma, she was placed on life support. She was treated at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital and was taken out of intensive care and moved to a private room Sept. 3. According to a New York State agency, doctors who performed the procedure that ultimately led to the death of Joan Rivers messed up by not following the proper procedure before administering a huge amount of the anaesthetic Propofol. Propofol is a strong anaesthetic that’s used for surgery which is given by IV and should only be administered by a medical professional trained in its use. It takes effect in a matter of seconds. Meanwhile a computer at the clinic has it recorded that the late comedienne was administered a huge dose, and a staff member admitted that she made a mistake entering the dosage, and input more than double the amount that should have been given to Joan. It’s so sad that Joan’s death could have been avoided; she died on 4th September, 2014, at age 81.

Inspirational singer and the second half of Oshadipe Twins died at 6:30 am on Friday, October 3, 2014, following complaints of chest and heart pains. Insiders claimed that ever since she had a baby boy in July 2013, she had often complained of chest and heart pains – but doctors couldn’t detect exactly what the problem was. Series of tests, home and abroad, failed to diagnose the ailment. A few days back the pain worsened, and she was hospitalized, and eventually discharged with no conclusive solution to her illness. In the early hours of Friday, she started complaining of same chest pains and while she was being rushed back to the hospital…she died! 1 Share
