nkoso:

all that nigerians argue about is how big the country(economy) is, mentioning cities like lagos, abuja and all that. but not all nigerians leave in lagos - which is congested anyway! even if you leave in lagos, chances are that u are poor. very few are rich. ghana has less congested cities that are peaceful with stable electricity and a whole lot. if nigeria is as mighty as we have been misleading ourselves, why is it that every US president visits ghana instead of nigeria. lets stop lying to ourselves. i know it is hard to criticise your country when it is compared to a geographically small country like ghana but nigerians who have been to ghana know the difference. life is easier in ghana than nigeria.

And why is it that folks like you are insufferable self-haters who constantly ignore facts in consistently talking down your own nation? This thread , even if mischievous IMO, is really very simple to dissect. OP ask "is Nigeria really the richest Country in West Africa? "  Well , the facts , for those who care to be guided by facts rather than emotions, show that Nigeria , using many indices , is by far the richest Nation in West Africa. We are talking about national wealth here so I dont know why sentiments has to be introduced to the extent that some of you , including the very ignorant OP , talk about Ghana. Below is an article showing that 44 of the top 50 Companies in West Africa are based in Nigerian . Folks , there has to be an extent to which self-hatred blinds us from the truth on the ground  . Haba !!!! We are the richest nation in West Africa without doubt and the fact is that , with decent leadership , we have the potentials to be the richest nation in Africa .

West Africa: Nigeria rules sub-region.(Africa's Top 200 companies)(Survey)

After last year's survey of the top African companies, it would scarcely have been credible for Nigeria to further entrench its domination of West Africa's listed companies. Out of the top 50 companies in the region, an incredible 40 were based in Nigeria, with six in Ghana and four in Cote d'Ivoire.

Yet another year of strong growth in Nigeria has seen the West African giant extend its lead, taking 44 out of the top 50 slots in this year's survey, leaving just three for Ghana and two for Cote d'Ivoire.

First Bank of Nigeria is the biggest company in West Africa in this year survey. The rise in its market capitalisation from $2.2bn last year to $2.6bn in this year's survey has enabled it to overtake Nigerian Breweries. The latter suffered a small fall in value but hangs on to second spot ahead of telecoms company Sonatel of Senegal and a host of Nigerian banks.

Seven of the top 12 listed companies in West Africa are Nigerian banks: First Bank of Nigeria, Zenith Bank International, Union Bank of Nigeria, United Bank for Africa, Intercontinental Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank and Oceanic Bank.

All of the top 12 companies have market capitalisation in excess of $1bn, up from just four firms last year, indicating that the body of substantial Nigerian companies, particularly in the banking sector, is growing strongly.

Oceanic Bank is worthy of particular mention for the rapid rise in its market capitalisation from $463m last year to $1bn just 12 months on.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, the eighth most populous country in the world, and the most populous country in the world in which the majority of the population is black. It is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies, and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The economy of Nigeria is one of the fastest growing in the world, with the International Monetary Fund projecting a growth of 9% in 2008 and 8.3% in 2009.[7][8][9][10] International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also announced that Nigeria is the third fastest growing economy in the world after China and India, as a result of the growth of the nation’s economy from 6.9 per cent in 2009 to 7.4 per cent this year.[11] It is the third largest economy in Africa, it is also the largest exporter of oil in Africa[12] and is a regional power that is also the hegemon in West Africa.

At the time the op started this topic (2006) Ghana was the rishest; GDP per capita, while Nigeria is rishest; GDP purchasing power parity In West Africa. But now Nigeria is the rishest in any which way. LOL

Too many people here r talk rubbish.

It's only an ignorant person dt will dt will argue or try to balance d size of d Nigerian economy against Ghana. Ghanaian economy size can at best b compared to a state's in Nigeria. D whole Nigeria may rate low on HDI scale but subtitute it with lagos, anambra, delta or rivers state and see how it will rate probably among top 4 in Africa. But does dt make it richer or larger dn d nigerian economy? On d reverse, replace it with yobe, kebbi, ebonyi or ekiti and see how it drops to last five probably.

It's show of ignorance to take some facts as absolute where in real fact r relative. Please know it that d nigerian economy albeit bedeviled by a lot of factors, it remains one of d largest against any African nation or regional economic bloc.

Nigeria is the richest country in West Africa. We have one of the largest GDP in the entire continent, second only to South Africa. Soon, Nigeria will be the largest economy in all of Africa. How can anyone say Ghana is wealthier than Nigeria?  grin  Nigeria has the population and larger oil reserves. Making it a wealthy country and a leader amongst the emerging markets in all of Africa. The only reason Ghana is getting noticed is, because of their good governances, not their economy. People need to stop mixing up the two. Economies are different from the political arena.

I am sure you don't understand. A person tries to post on these threads freely and then you try to associate him with another person. What kind of sense does that make? Let Ezeuche speak for himself, and allow me  to write freely. I have no time to entertain such foolish shananigans and the tribal games that many of you play on Nairaland. It is not my cup of tea to say the least. I am here on Nairaland to discuss serious topics. Not to battle you people.

Re: Is Nigeria Really The Richest Country In West Africa? by Nobody: 6:53pm On May 05, 2011
no real democarcy, no human rights
at the beginning of last year (2010) when yar adua was in saudi so many people said a lot of rubbish about him
they even went further to insult the mans personality and no one was jailed, beaten up, killed or persecuted in any way. isnt that human right expressed in freedom of press, a phenomenon which you cannot find in mid-east, north africa, kenya, uganda, malawi, rwanda, drc, south africa. lets leave africa, russia, eastern europe, north korea, etc

under the pressure mounted on the house of assembly by so many civil society organisation, executive powers were transfered to jonathan. this is government by the people! and government by the people is an important part of the definition of democracy. that means, remove government by the people there is no democracy
as regards elections, we just had a free and fair election, forget about the aftermarth. even the previous once we have had that were seen as free and fair, those results have been challenged in court and opposition declared winner. for that to happen, it means that the judiciary were independent and not even the so-called power of incumbency was able to have an effect on the out come of the court rule

nigeria is a democracy! all of my arguments above are based on facts that we not only can attest to but are facts that we withnessed. it is not a distant history at all.
but it is so sad that most nigerians argue on sentimental and emotional grounds that they cannot see the truth

ROSSIKE: emeka, thanks for that official data you posted above. It shows that Indians, Pakistanis, Kenyans, Ghanaians, Banglageshis etc have it much worse than Nigerians, but you'll rarely find any of those people dismissing their country the way some idiots who call themselves Nigerians do.

And I'm really getting sick of people going on about ''how well Ghana is doing''. Look, if you visit Ghana, all they have is Accra. Finish. Drive out of Accra the capital and you'll be wondering just what it is that people are talking about. It's like stopping off in Abuja and returning to say Nigeria is now eldorado.

Please please please, there is no basis for comparing Ghana to Nigeria. The Annual GDP of Lagos State alone is $33 billion.

The annual GDP of Ghana is $22 billion.

Says it all right there.

No basis for comparison.
Lagos State does not represent the whole of Nigeria. If so then Guateng in S.A is a representative of S.A then S.A is among the richest nations on earth.Same to the Nile Delta in Egypt or Nairobi Kenya or Sao Paulo Brazil.
Re: Is Nigeria Really The Richest Country In West Africa? by Olaolufred(m): 3:22pm On Apr 10, 2012
The Human head carries the Brain.
The brain is the Human's central processing unit(CPU).
Nigeria is bereaved of Head. So the body is almost dead.
Going by this logic, Nigeria is poor.
That is why you can see majority in abject poverty even though we posts figures in Trillion.
GDP is high, but where is the PCI?
We decieve ourselves with figures while we have an acute ailment ravaging us.
POVERTY OF THE MIND. THE MIND IS THE CENTRE OF THOUGHT, IT IS SAME AS BRAIN, BUT HOUSED BY THE HEAD.
THAT IS THE EXACT PLACE WHERE OUR POVERTY LIES.

GHANA gdp 90 billion$ as of 2013. With a population 25 million. Gdp per person aproximately 4000$. Nigeria 400+billion$ with a population 170 million. Gdp per persoo aproximately 3000$. World fact book. Nigeria is the 3 richest in africa and ghana 10. Unemployment in nigeria 50 percent ghana is 11 percent. People living poverty line, nigeria 60% ghana 28% of the population. So ghana is not much beter than nigeria so do nigerai not better than ghan
