Nigerian Universities Likely To Be NO.1 In January 2015 Webometrics Ranking by Xcely: 6:07pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
The past three years of the Webometric Rankings have seen fierce movements of Top Nigerian Universities' ranks up and down the lists. The only exception would be Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), which has remained unmoved on the list, occupying the number 1 spot for almost two years. Nevertheless, we have seen very interesting surprises (such as Covenant University's rise to 2nd place for the first time ever, even displacing University of Ibadan and University of Lagos) which has prompted my release of "Most likely Universities for No. 1 rank on the January edition of the 2015 Webometrics Ranking". I know there are a lot of other people keenly looking forward to that ranking, but here are my top 5 picks (In no particular order) based on past performance on the rankings and current developments in these schools. - University of Ibadan (UI) Nigeria's Premier University has remained (unshaken) in the Top 3 for many years running and its last ranking of 3rd place behind Covenant University, is certainly a very strategic point to make a dramatic comeback for No.1. We should certainly not forget that it remains Nigeria's "PREMIER" University. - University of Lagos (UNILAG) With a tendency to spring surprises every now and then, we should not underestimate the might of one of Nigeria's most competitive schools. UNILAG has achieved the N0.1 feat before and can do it again. - University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) This school is certainly no stranger to "Firsts". Known mostly for its "No ASUU strike" policy, the school operates one of Nigeria's fastest Federal University calenders. The school has very strong ICT initiatives and is a major Favorite for No. 1 in this coming edition. It's interesting to note that the school also occupies No. 1 on another respected Webometric ranking. - Covenant University (CU) Highly reputed as Nigeria's best private University, Covenant University has been giving top Federal Schools a run for their money on recent rankings. With its latest ranking of 2nd place (only ousted by OAU), which is also its best so far, a lot is expected from the subsequent webometrics editions. The university which also stands as Africa's 2nd best private university, has risen dramatically to the top 10 over the last 2 years. It's latest feat is only an indication of what to expect in the future. - Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Undoubtedly, OAU has proved its worth across different spheres of assessments. Having maintained the No. 1 spot on the Webometric ranking for 2 years running, there's every possibility OAU is coming back for No. 1. What's however unclear is if the distorted academic session the school experienced last year can in anyway affect its viability for the No. 1 spot on January's ranking. So there it goes, our contenders for the January Edition of The 2015 Webometric rankings! Success! Ranking for Subharan Africa 2014: http://www.webometrics.info/en/Ranking_africa/Sub_saharan_Africa |

obiZEAL: UNIJOS is a great school, but relative to these schools, it hasnt fared well enough on Webometrics to be on this list. Remember this list is based on "Webometrics". UNIJOS comes tops when other criteria are used. About Webometrics, see this exhibit from Wikipedia. The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, also known as Ranking Web of World Universities, is a ranking system for the world's universities based on a composite indicator that takes into account both the volume of the Web contents (number of web pages and files) and the visibility and impact of these web publications according to the number of external inlinks (site citations) they received. The ranking is published by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) located in Madrid. The aim of the Ranking is to improve the presence of the academic and research institutions on the Web and to promote the open access publication of scientific results.[1] The ranking started in 2004 and is updated every January and July. Today it provides Web indicators for more than 12,000 universities worldwide. 1 Like |
