Certificate or competence and performance? The greatest tragedy that has befallen our country is the celebration of certificates at the expense of competence and performance. Because of the misplaced values, lots of people do anything just to acquire certificates which have no impact on human lives. People buy, forge and manipulate just to possess a certificate. Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a first degree holder managed Nigeria's economy as minister of finance during the war period and there was no oil to generate revenue to the extent that the country didn't borrow money to finance the economy or the war which lasted for about 3 years. But today, a Ph.D holder Dr. Okonjo Iweala is in charge of the economy in peace time and oil dollar rain, yet the economy is in tatters and the government is borrowing from left, right, centre and behind to fund its activities and it is even unable to pay workers salaries for months. My people, shine your eyes and lets focus on the direction where there is light rather than celebrating persons whose academic qualifications deserves to be scrutinized and withdrawn for impacting negatively on society.
