"I'm listening." Segun repeated, patiently. The intruder looked down at his feet in shame for a while, then summoned up courage to shift his gaze to Segun.

"My name is Korede, we met earlier at the retirement party.

"Korede is ...ma ma my chil child hoo hood friend..." Sade stammered

Segun smiled. He leaned further on the sofa, and feigned rapt attention. He'd had enough of their game. He remembered korede from the party. He was introduced to him as her first cousin. He stretched out his hand towards Korede. Korede took his hand in his limp hands.

"Sade and mr Korede, enjoy the rest of the evening." He turned towards Sade then said, "Sade, it's been nice meeting you." With that, he put his hands in his pant pockets and walked out without looking back.

Sade ran after him and pleaded with him to hear her out. He chose not to look back and betray his feelings. His eyes were clouded with unshed tears. His hope of marrying a beautiful, elegant lady crushed in his face. Sade and the security guards watched in awe as he tore out the 'happy birthday' ribbons he had tied so carefully on the car earlier. Korede watched from the living room.

He got inside the car and reversed into the street. Sweat beads hung on his brows inspite of the AC. As he hit the streets, he allowed his mind to dwell on the relationship he had with Sade.

Two weeks into his relationship, she had informed him the Ambassador and his wife were just her godparents. She had introduced Korede to him briefly as a first cousin and his name then had been Kunle! Now he remembered going through her phone on a chilly December night when she had left it in his car. He had read so many messages from 'Korede' and so many other guys.

How he drove from the students' hostel, through the heavy Dugbe traffic, he couldn't remember . He kept playing the scene at Sade's place over and over in his head. All he knew was, twenty five minutes later, the 'gift car' screeched to a halt in front of Wande's gate. He looked at the iphone in his glove compartment and decided to go through the motion of dialing Wande's number before hitting the security buzzer.

"Hello, Segun." Wande's sweet voice came on the line. "Are you there?"

His head was spinning. In a fog, he must not have said a word into the receiver.

"I'm outside your gate." He finally managed to say.

She knew it the minute Segun was ushered into the living room. She saw it in his face. He didn't have to say a word.

"Sade?" She asked solemnly

Segun nodded somberly. "It's all over."

She stood up from her single sofa and walked up to him on the couch. Tade was away on his usual weekend trips and she was alone with Ngozi and the twins. She sat on the arm of the couch and held him by the shoulders.

"I'll go get dressed and we'll go and talk about this." Wande said to him. He merely nodded his response. He watched her walk elegantly upstairs. He didn't quite understand, but it cheered him up. A smile suddenly broke in his face.

Wande quickly put on a pair of jeans and a nike tshirt. She put on light makeup, shook out her hair and checked herself in the mirror. satisfied, she checked her watch, it was 7:27pm. She checked on the twins,they were fast asleep. She left instructions with Ngozi before joining Segun downstairs.

A couple of hours later, they sat in his car, outside her gate. Everywhere was quiet. The two hours with Wande had lifted his damp spirit. He even managed to laugh at a few jokes cracked by the comedian at the 'joint'.

Without thinking twice, he took her hand in his. She wanted to hold back, but a soft voice inside her nudged her on. She gave in and let him hold her hands, then let head rest on his shoulder.

"To tell thee truth," Segun tod her, "I'm glad I came by. It's been a beautiful evening."

"Me, too."

Then she felt him hold her close. A tingle raced down Wande's spine. Their arms brushed. A nervous apprehension tingled between them. Suddenly, they were all over each other.; kissing, touching.

As suddenly as they started, she pulled back. Her eyes were filled with tears. She had almost forgotten how good it was to be held, to be desired by somebody. But she was a married woman, she reminded herself.

"I'm sorry." She apologized

"For what?" He asked nervously. He had enjoyed every bit of their outing, the touch. He had not felt like this about a woman in a long time.

"For leading you on." She said as she adjusted her T-shirt, over her shoulder.

"We can't deny the chemistry between us, Wande." He told her gently.

"No, we can't. That's the problem." She answered. "You have just broken up with a girl, I'm enduring a rough marriage...we are not a good match"

He sighed and held her hands limply. "This is not a coincidence, Wande. It's meant to happen."

Without answering him, she clutched her purse and opened the door. Without looking back, she scurried towards the entrance. Tears welled up in her eyes as she wiped the memory of that one kiss off her lips.

Segun watched in awe, as she disappeared into the well lit compound.
He brought the engine to life and made his way out of the quiet estate.

Cool breeze blew in her face as she walked through the driveway. What a roller coaster night, she thought. She had almost let down her guards! With Segun, she knew control over her emotions was never going to be easy again, not after tonight.

"Welcome ma." The guard greeted her as she passed the security house

She noticed the light in the guests room was on, it wasn't when she left with Segun two hours earlier. "Thanks, Major. Do we have a guest?"

"Yes ma. Oga's mum and sister came immediately you went out ma."

She was shocked. "Really?"

She quickly made her way to the house without waiting for Major's answer.

As she stepped into the livingroom, she noticed mama's figure. She sat on a single sofa, wrapped in a quilt, apparently from cold. Lying on the couch was Titi, Tade's saucy younger sister. They were both watching a yoruba movie on African magic channel.

"Good evening, mama, aunty." She knelt down on one knee, showing courtesy.

Mama hissed, titi didn't shift her gaze from the TV.

Mama lifted her eyes to the wall clock and pointed out the time to Wande. It was 9;49pm. She had looked at the time every ten minutes since they entered the house and discovered she wasn't around.


"Mama, have you eaten?"

"Eat ke? We were waiting for you. We didn't know you have started going up and down anyhow in your husband's absence." Mama hissed again and rolled her eyes in reproach.

Wande moved closer and sat down next to mama. "Mama, I'm sorry. For one, I didn't know you were coming. Two, I stepped out about two hours ago..."

"Shut up jare!" Titi said for the first time. "Married slut." She threw the remote control violently on the glass table, scattering the batteries in the process. She was definitely ready to fight Wande. Wande took a cue. She rose to her feet and quietly walked towards her room.

She heard a rustling behind her. It was Titi. She pulled her back and faced her. "Where do you think you are going? Ngozi told us you went out with a man."

Let this go, I'm tired. She begged inside. She continued climbing the stairs but Titi would have none of it. She pulled her back one more time, this time holding the neck of her T-shirt. "Gbos." She slapped Wande hard across her tender face.

Shock registered on Wande's face, even as tears cascaded doWn her soft cheeks. "Wh...a...t?" She asked, facing her assailant, hand rubbing her smarting cheek.

"Are you cheating on my brother, you hoe?" Titi asked, ready for more.

"She is o, leaving two kids at home to go and be with a man!" Mama nudged her daughter on.

"I only went out with a friend who..." She tried explaining in between sobs.

"Gbos," another slap hit her, this time on her right cheek.

With the agility of a cat, she swung, without thinking. She gave Titi three hard slaps successively before she could control herself. She'd earned it, wande thought. For almost a minute, nothing moved, no sounds, even the TV seemed to join the silent night. Only the whirring of the air conditioners could be heard.

She walked briskly to her room. Without changing into her night dress, she removed her jeans and laid under the cover, wrapping herself to the cheek. She wet her pillow with her tears. The night had ended badly. She checked the time, it was quarter past eleven. Sleep eluded her. Her body shook violently with as she sobbed.

Downstairs, Titi held both cheeks in her hands. She stood rooted to the spot even after Wande had gone upstairs. She had always boasted of having wande at the tip of her fingers. She had never been more surprised.

"Pele, oko mi." Mama managed to pull her back to the couch. They heard a scurry of feet as Ngozi scampered back to her room. She had enjoyed the free show in silence, she had enough and more to dish out to the guards tomorrow.

"Mama, she slapped me!" Titi managed to say.

"Em, you should have stopped at the first slap, Titi. You equally over did it." Mama responded.

Titi picked mama's phone and scrolled to Tade's name. Not minding the time, she dialed his number. It rand incessantly but he didn't pick it. Then she tried again. This time he picked it.

"Hello, maami." Tade's gruff voice came on the line.

"Brother Tade, it's me o," she sobbed loudly into the phone. "Your wife beat me up and even slapped mama in the process, all because we complained she went out with a man." She broke her sobs with sniffs. Mama gave her a thumb up, she acted the part well.

Tade was shocked. Wande had always been a pun in their hands. Could she reAlly have had the nerve to carry out such act? He wondered.

"I'll be coming home first thing tomorrow. Let me speak with mama."

She handed the phone to mama who sounded so frail on the phone.
"My son, come quickly o." Was all she managed to say before breaking down in tears. Through the fake tears, mama and titi exchanged looks, even smile.

"Goodness me! I'll be with you first thing tomorrow morning." He hung up and turned his back on Bola who was fast asleep. He couldn't imagine what came over his meek wife.
