Chapter 40

*********************

Bola walked down the newly tarred road on a new estate off the outer ring road. She had chattered a taxi from the hospital, but the road was open only to pedestrians because of the construction work. She knew the address she was looking for; she had been there twice with Charles.

Approaching the building, she noticed that the big black gate was locked from inside.

"Ko ko ko." She knocked on the gate.

Silence.

She opened her bag and brought out the address again, even though she had been there before. She nodded. She was in the right place.

"Ko ko ko" she knocked even harder, this time using a big gravel she picked near her feet.

A stern looking hefty man strolled to the gate from the house. He wore a pair of khaki shorts and a green sleeveless top. He looked like he has been in the gym lifting weight for sometime.

"What do you want?" He asked in a husky voice

Bola became scared. With shaky voice, she managed to answer him, "em, this is my house, I mean, my husband, Mr Charles Adesuwa is in charge"

"Charles? I don't know any Charles. I'm here on Chief Mrs Williams' instructions."

"Chief Mrs Will-----"

"Please, go to her. Leave this place before I get angry." He raised his top slightly, showing the butt of a silver pistol."

Bola shook violently. Her first time of seeing a gun. She allowed tears to flow freely from her eyes as she turned her back and started walking back to the main road. She dared not argue with the man with the gun.

Everything that has been happening since she left Oshogbo had been disastrous. First, she couldn't reach Charles on phone. His house was deserted, Tade caught her red handed, seized her car, he fainted, Wande had been rude to her at the hospital...the worst thing was that she was running low on cash.

She pulled out her sleek android phone and dialed Charles' numbers again. No luck. She dialed Sade's number, she picked on second ring.

"Hello, sis" Sade said on the other end

"Sade, how are you?"

"I'm fine o," she yawned loudly into the phone. "How is uncle Tade?"

"I left him at the hospital, his bitchy wife was there and I had to leave to avoid trouble"

"So, where are you now?"

"I'm stranded. I'm just leaving my house at-------" she narrated what just happened to her, tears straining her voice.

"Chief Mrs Williams? That's uncle Tade's mother-in-law"

"I know." Bola answered and wiped her face. She was just like 20 meters from the main road. "I'm on my way to your house."

Silent.

"Are you still there?" She asked after a few seconds

"I'm...I'm here sis. You can come." With that, she hung up.

"Orita" bola flagged down the first bike she saw.

"N200" the bike man told her. There were so many potential passengers by that time of the day.

Without any arguments, she jumped on the bike. She looked back at the estate. "There must be a mistake somewhere" she said, loud enough, but the breeze and noise from the bike drowned her voice.

Chapter 41

Segun drove slowly, to the annoyance of other motorists. He needed to think over his discussion with Wande a few minutes ago. He checked his watch; 18:09. An angry motorist that had been honking for ages managed to overtake him.

"Go and get a driver" the man shouted at him. Segun smiled and continued at his snail's speed. Wande's answer to his declaration of love kept coming back to him.

He pulled up in front of his parents' Agodi mansion. The gate opened wide before him. He drove inside. His mum waited for him on the porch with a tray of home made pies. "When will she realise I'm no longer a baby?" He muttered to himself.

"Mum" he hugged her as he got out of the car. He took a pie from the tray and took a bite. It was nice, as usual. He smiled and allowed her to lead him in.

"You look tired dear" she said as they entered their private living room.

"Hello, dad" he greeted his dad.

"Hello, son" his law guru dad answered him. He dropped the copy of law journal he was reading, slid his bifocal glasses down his nose. "How was your day?"

Segun sat down next to him and dropped the huge folder he carried on the table before answering. "Not bad, dad. We are through with the senator's papers, all set for court. The Offors agreed to settle out of court...." He flipped through the files in the folder, briefing his dad on each case.

His father smiled. He never regretted asking or rather forcing his bright lawyer son to come down to Nigeria. At 65, he was ready to retire and allow him to run things. Segun had proved himself to be a good advocate, an administrator and a wonderful human manager.

Tolani, their live in maid dropped a packet of sugar free juice before him. His mother walked in behind her.

"Oluwasegun, what are you doing about Sade?" She asked suddenly

"Madam!" Her husband said angrily

"Mum, I've laid out my conditions regarding Sade. Dna or no child support. I can't support her pregnancy"

His mother sighed. "Segun, what if the child is yours after starving the mother of fund?"

"And what if the child is not mine?"

"I've interviewed her, the child is yours I'm sure. In fact, I think you should marry her once the dna confirms you are the father"

"Hahaha" Segun laughed really hard, holding his side. "Mum, don't even go there again! Sade is a liar, a prostitute. besides, I'm in love with someone else"

"With a married woman, abi?" She asked angrily.

"Woman, don't you ever get tired of this argument? Let the boy be!" His dad cut her short.

"Thanks, dad." He picked his car key and headed upstairs, leaving his parents to argue it all out as usual. After all, they have both studied law, even though his mum had not practiced law in over fifteen years.

Chapter 42

Back at the guest house, Tade set his plans in motion. First, he dialed shadow's number. Shadow was his PA/ body guard.

"Hello, boss" Shadow answerd his phone

"Check the fuel in that car, if it's much, drain it. I'm selling it"

"The fuel or the car?" Shadow asked stupidly

Tade sighed. "The car."

"Ha, ok sir!"

He dialed his mechanic and his car dealer and informed them. Then he dialed bola's number. It rang to cut twice. She picked on his third attempt.

"Bola" he said

She was shocked to hear his voice. "Tade! How are you?"

"Yea, I'm fine." He answered

"I'm sorry about everything----"

"Don't be, Bola. Too late to feel sorry."

"Please, can I have my car back?" She asked.

"Oops, no. The car was bought in my name, I still have the original documents. I'm selling it"

"Tade, please!" She pleaded after a long silence

He ended the call without answering her.

He scrolled down to his missed calls and dialed Anna's number. Wande's call came through before he was able to connect to Anna.

"What do you want, Wande Williams?" He asked in annoyance

"Wande Williams?" She asked, her voice breaking. She had been crying. "I'm still Wande Johnson."

He laughed. "Call yourself whatever name you like. What do you want, woman?"

"Your forgiveness." She managed to say as the tears threatened to break again.

Not moved by her tears, he said "Ok, I forgive you, is that all?"

"Baby, please! I want you back in our lives. The twins-------"

He hung up without giving her a chance to talk.

He hissed and dialed Anna's number again.

"Ha, uncle Tade! I've been calling your numbers without luck! How is your body now? Your wife told me you were hospitalized"

"Yea, but I'm back on my feet now. Saw your calls"

"Yes. Charles is still behind bars. Your MIL refused to allow him bail. I've called my dad's lawyer and he is sending a junior lawyer down tomorrow"

Charles behind bars? That was a new one. He had considered getting in between Anna's legs in revenge, but Anna looked tough, date raping her wouldn't give him the kind of satisfaction he wanted, besides, her father was a big man and could use his influence to cause trouble for him.

He just found a better opportunity.

"Wow, I didn't know. It was his girlfriend, Bola...oops...I'm sorry..."

"His girlfriend?" Anna's voice sounded raised

"Anna, I'm sorry you are hearing this from me. It was a slip of tongue" He heard Anna's sob over the line. He apologized and smiled, mission accomplished.

Anna was the best thing that ever happened to Charles in their growing years. For the first time, he had met a woman from a very rich family, a woman who was willing to give him anything, one who opened her arms to his son, loved him dearly.

Yes, no better way to punish Charles than to make his joy short lived.

Anna checked the time on the Quartz wall clock, it was 7:30pm. Too late to go back to iyaganku. She decided to go in the morning. Daniel sat quietly, holding his toy robot tightly to his chest. He had barely said a word since they got back home. She stood up and walked to the innocent boy who flinched at her touch.

"Baby, what's going on with you? You didn't even touch your noodles!" She scooped a spoon full of the well spiced noodles and raised it to Daniel's lips.

Reluctantly, he opened his mouth and took the noodles without chewing. He took a sip from his glass of juice and waved anna's second spoon away.

"I'm ok, mum"

Anna felt relieved when he said mum. he seemed to be getting better.

"Baby, are you upset because daddy is not here with us?" She asked

He nodded.

"Dad is busy with work, ok? He'll be back tomorrow or monday" she assured him

Daniel turned and faced her, "but why did that policeman hold a gun? I think he wants to kill daddy" he suddenly started crying. Anna rocked the vulnerable boy, all too emotional herself.

"Nobody will kill daddy, ok? The gun is meant to protect daddy from bad people"

Anna wasn't really sure of what was going on with Charles. The policemen had told her about him owing Mama Williams, but she just couldn't find the connection. For one, he never worked for her. Wande and Tade had failed to shed any light on the issue, yet both have refused to step up for their friend. She was really confused. Tade's call and the mention of Bola made it even worse. She had seen some hidden messages about Bola on his phone archive when they first started dating.

She stood up and paced the room up and down. She ran her right index finger through her wedding band. A mistake jumping into marriage with Charles despite his parents' warning?

"Mum, will the police man protect my daddy like super man?" Daniel's voice jolted her back from her thoughts.

She smiled and placed her hand on his shoulder, "he will, my dear." She answered, as she wiped a lone tear off her cheek.

Chapter 44

6:45am, sunday morning. Tade had woken up at the first sound of the muslim call to prayer at a near by mosque. Dressed in a faded levis and a grey round neck, he was set for his journey. He locked the room and went downstairs, jingling his car key.

He had considered his plans, weighed his options and was convinced he was doing the right thing. He got in the car and started his engine. The engine came to life just fine. He always left his cars in good condition.

"Morning sir" the guard on duty saluted him as he drove through the guest house gate, into the deserted street, towards iwo road. The street lights were still on, some traders were already setting up their wares and the sky was near clearing.

The road was free by that time of the day, which was part of his plans to get to his destination faster. There was every need to get to Oshogbo before Bola. Iwo road was already bubbling with activities by the time he got there. A heavy traffic jam was already forming under the bridge. By 7:05 am, he was back at top speed and cruising his way to Oshogbo.

At Gbongan junction, he picked his phone and scrolled to a number.

"Hello," the sleepy voice at the other end answered

"Mr Femi?" He asked

"Yes, sir. Are you in Oshogbo already?"

"Almost. Just get ready."

"Ok sir, call me at Abere."

"I will." He ended the call and connected his phone back to the car charger, shaking his head to the tune of Dorobuci blasting from his CD player.

He pulled up his car not too far from a grey DAF truck parked conspicuously in front of Bola's house. He killed his engine and got out. He walked towards the truck, avoiding the muddy water in the pot holes made worse by the torrential rain. By the time he got to the DAF truck, his pant had gathered its fair share of mud.

"Mr Femi" he tapped the driver's side to call his attention.

"Yes, sir" the tap jolted Mr Femi back to life. He was already sleeping behind the steering. Two of his loaders jumped down from the back of the truck and said hello to Tade.

"Let's get to work" tade instructed them. The gate was already unlocked but still shut. He prayed it was the neighbors that had left for church and not Hope and the children. It was already 9:24am. One of Mr Femi's boys opened the gate. He parked, back to the entrance of the apartment.

Hope opened the door in surprise. She had the 'what's going on here' look on her face as she wiped her hands on her black skirt.

"Good morning sir"

"Morning Hope. How are the kids?"

"They are eating sir. Where is Aunty?"

"She's driving down. We have completed our own house and we are moving there this morning."

Hope was stunned. Nobody told her anything about moving so soon, or about any house. But then, that's their problem. After all, Tade had suddenly brought the same truck to their dada estate house one day to surprise them with his plan to move them to the duplex. Besides, he owned everything.

She shrugged her shoulders and opened the door, inviting them all in against her batter judgment.

"Daddy!!!" The children were happy to see him. They jumped on him, abandoning their food. He was overwhelmed with emotion.

"How are my darlings doing?" He asked as he picked Mary up and gave Dele a hi5. He dropped Mary who was already getting big.

Hope dialed Bola's number but when she couldn't reach her at the second ring, she followed them in and helped them with the packing.

They packed only the furniture, electronics, washing machine, industrial cooker and other expensive gadgets, leaving only plates and clothes.

"Get the children's clothes in the big boxes, please" he told Hope. Still wondering what's going on, she packed their clothes and shoes as instructed. Tade threw their games and toys in and zipped the boxes.

"What of me sir?" She asked

"You wait for madam. I'm also coming back after dropping this first set. This is a surprise."

"Shey we don't need to wash the place ni?" Hope asked.

Tade smiled, "Naa, I supervised the washing myself on friday."

She shrugged her shoulders as she watched the truck disappear down the narrow street. Tade got inside the car, Dele and Mary smiling, relaxed at the back. He started the engine and waved at Hope, flashing a smile as he headed out through the gate and down the street.
