now you are talking, if government can lead by example by being prudent and accountable, it will be easier for it to convince the people to pay tax, the people will readily oblige because they know the money tax paid will still come back to them in forms of service delivery and provision of basic infrastructures by the government

welfare package can never be every body, cos it can't be sustainable that way, the government will have to develop a scientific approach in determining who deserves it or not also who should be expunged, besides there should be a duration for a particular age bracket to benefit from it

mind you welfare package is a veritable tool for curbing crime

I get your point, but lets be true to ourselves, Nigerians want something for nothing, ALWAYS.

Even when they go to countries where there is a welfare state, many simply try to scam the government. If not that the gov takes tax from source, many Nigerians abroad will not pay it.

I have heard here on NL many times, Nigerians complain about the fact that you have to pay tax abroad and cite it as a positive for Nigeria, that they are not made to pay tax.

Yet they want the benefits of a welfare state.

The notion that welfare curbs crime, is untrue and unfounded. Otherwise countries that have a welfare state, would be crime free.

Besides, Nigerians will take the N5000 and still commit crime. We are talking about N5000 per family, which is how much in a family of four? N312.50 per week, per person.

I'm pretty sure, a job (even as a megard) pays more than that.

By the way, you did not address my question about whether Nigerians are ready to pay tax?

Nowhere in the world, does the citizen say that they will pay tax after the gov has provided a welfare state. A welfare state is funded by the citizen, the government designs systems and decides how the money is used.

The citizen mobilises the governmnt, and they have no choice but to pay tax. The gov gets the tax before they get their share of the money they actually worked for.

Its not just income tax, its council tax, road tax, water rates, property tax, inheritance tax, business rates/tax. This is a DIRECT transfer from the citizen to the governments coffers, which the gov then uses to provide social amenities, from unemployment welfare, tax credits (for those working), child benefit, road repairs, libraries, parks.......you name it, the taxpayer is paying for it before they get it.

Better to put it that way than say its not possible.. BTW, did GMB say job creation isn't part of his manifesto? I'm sure of one thing, Buhari can't be worse than Jonathan no matter what some people say.

ISpiksDaTroof:

I am talking about people who are working, not the poor that GMB is seeking to help with this welfare strategy.

The only people that I know for sure pay taxes are civil servants and other working directly for the gov. Others do, but there is no robust system of taxation that spans the whole country and covers all working people or businesses.

There is a tax threshold in all countries that have a welfare state. If you are below the threshold you don't pay tax. Even for those above it is calculated at different rates, depending on your salary/wage. People who are self employed pay taxes too.

Nigerans, will always, always, never agree that individuals should pay tax, yet with the same lips talk about welfare that they should experience.

Ofcourse they will cite western countries to agrue what they should get, but never what they should GIVE.

Okay, please give us the numbers. How 'rich' is Nigeria (especially now with the oil prices), and how much does it cost to create, run and deliver a welfare state?

You may be correct that one tenth of the money stolen could provide this for one year, but is that even the best use of that money?

Buhari has not got one tenth of the stolen money to use, either. I guess after that one year we will have 25 million people back to being poor? The ones coming after, will have just missed the train. thats not a system, thats just a token gesture.

How much is it going to cost anyway, to just do this one campaign promise? Just for one year?
Nigeria has been mismanaged, yes, but its a fallacy to believe that without money being stolen Nigera would be like UAE, its not true.

We would definately be in a better position, I agree.

Nigeria is not rich and never was, we could have become a much wealthier and developed country, but rich, just based on oil, nope.

It is not sustainable

But

Wiser if it is used to encourage proliferation of businesses that will employ them when they grow up and become investment pools for their money.

He never said "global".... He said he would stabilize "Oil prices".
Now, if you think that is an impossible statement, then l have no right even discussing with you!

You need to get a Dictionary and look up the difference between "Stabilize" and "Increase/Decrease".
You also need to get a good "general education", Economics in particular, to see how "Market Stabilization" is/can be achieved.

I dont like dolts jumping on a topic they know nothing about, just because they are "fuelled" by partisan politics laced with a huge dose of ignorance! wink wink

I am shocked that most people who dont like Buhari (out of fear, out of ignorance or just sheer hatred) are asking: WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

Maybe l should ask you guys: Where did the $20 Billion Dollars missing from NNPC come from?
Where did the $5Billion or so that Dimeji Bank-Ole stole, come from?
Where did the Billions being distributed to TAN come from?
Where did the #2Billion for "Aso Rock food" come from?
Where did the "Constituency Allowance of our useless Sin-nators come from?
Where does the Billions being stolen by the Subsidy Scammers come from?
Where did the $13Billion wasted on Electricity by OBJ (without results) come from?

I can go on forever, asking this question about "real money" that was stolen.

ALL WE NEED IS A LEADER THAT WOULD TAME LOOTING AND CORRUPTION AND YOU WILL SEE THAT WE ARE AWASH WITH SO MUCH MONEY THAT CAN BE USED FOR SUCH PROGRAM! We simply re-direct our stolen (now recovered or kept safe by Buhari) money to the program!

GEJ is certainly not that Leader, as we have seen in the last SIX YEARS of his being our President!

And those who are asking about "How the Program is going to be managed"?
I've heard people say the same thing when it comes to generating Electricity from Nuclear Power! (Nigerians are careless oOoo!)

Do you actually think Nigerians are so incapable of doing anything good? We just lack leadership, thats all. Go and see what Nigerians achieve abroad (despite all the odds they face), where they are provided with "leadership".

Please dont be so pessimistic.... we are a great people just unfortunate to be led by STUBBORN GOATS! grin grin

If the above is really true, then it will take more than myself to make you understand a very "cranially complicated" procedure!
It will be like trying to teach "Differential Mathematics" to a five year old. I would rather he learns A,B, C first before attempting that. wink wink
My point is, you need to get to grasp with the "basics" of Economics 101... then we can sit down and discuss the above.

As a parting shot: "Some things" led to the volatility of the Oil price viz-a-viz how it affects Nigeria in particular (which was Buhari's focus and what he intends to address).
