Archeologists think they have found the site of
the trial of Jesus under an abandoned building in
Jerusalem’s Old City.

The find was made near the Tower of David
Museum, which began expansion plans 15 years
ago.

Careful excavation work at the site of a former
prison uncovered what is believe to be the
remains of the Herod’s palace, where Pontius
Pilate sentenced Jesus to death.

The site has been opened to tours.

Jesus' trial site has been a point of debate
among Christian scholars.
“There is, of course, no inscription stating it
happened here, but everything —archaeological,
historical and gospel accounts — all falls into
place and makes sense,”

Shimon Gibson, an archaeology professor at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, told The
Washington Post .

The Rev. David Pileggi, minister of Christ Church
told the Post that he didn’t expect the discovery
to change the route of the Via Dolorosa, which
takes visitors on a trek from where it was
believed Pontius Pilate held the trial to where
Jesus was eventually crucified and buried. The
route has change several times.

Joel Baden, professor of Hebrew Bible at Yale
University, wrote for CNN that it is likely that two
trial sites will co-exist .

“The timing of the announcement is linked
entirely to the potential for tourist dollars, rather
than to the remarkable historical and religious
significance of the discovery on its Own terms,”
Baden wrote.
