Plus...I daresay facilities for mental treatment in his locality were limited....so it was the Police station that had to be his hospital (A sad state of affairs in most American cities).And police men are not trained mental health professionals. Plus...he did attack three of them....and sadly the police had to act as policemen (Unless you want them to magically become medics).

Racism exists in America....I am not naive...but this has plenty to do with the way mental health in the US is....good in some spots...bad in others. And this is not the first time something like this has happened.

Obviously, someone with mental issues shouldn't be kept in police custody in the first place, once that has been certified. But since you said they don't have facilities for folks with mental health in America, they should've just left him alone in isolation, without excessive force.

He's a victim of police brutality, and that's what the case should be about. Hence there's a cover-up about what led to his death, and also the reason why his parents are fighting for him. In policing, there's something called "measured force." And once they've ascertained that he had mental health problems (vulnerable cos in every society - minors, seniors, and folks with mental health problems are the most vulnerable people), they should have put him in a cell by himself, without troubling him. But they killed this guy - the same way they killed Eric Garner - and it's unacceptable.

A junior in secondary school...... Know him to his home here in Lagos. He was a good kid, very much into arts, I remember a year he came back to nigeria with his elder bro who happened to be my classmate n good friend. We all had fun, no violence, no police hitches. Behind the Savannah Police Dept story, we are waiting for that missing piece, they still don't wanna admit their wrongs!!, for a boy without any past criminal/violent record even in the US. I hope the autopsy tells us all.

Body system defers man...Bcus it works for Mr A those it mean it will work for Mr B......I think that same reason the officers wouldn't easy confirm he was having a strong negative effect on d drugs he took. Some Bipolar Patient might not react same extreme violent way he reacted.

On that profile any patient with a severe medical record is automatically flagged

I'm pretty sure his college has his medical record too , ask around you'll see its true

I beleive that America has limited facilities for mentally ill people....as such, oftentimes it is the police who have to act as mental health professionals....which they are not. And this is not the first time such a disaster has happened.

Decades ago...he would have been confined. However...the trend in America for several decades has been towards community centric care for mentally ill people. As a result....he was taking the drugs on his own. And once he loses insight....ie thinks he does not need the drugs again (a common problem among mentally ill people)...disaster happens.

I don't follow , do you think the police would have had access to his medical records and would have called in the appropriate medical/ health department after he was arrested / detained or even before they arrive on scene could they have checked his records ?

Criminal record is in police database, private medical record is not.
