First iPhone announcement made 8 years ago Friday

Eight years ago, an announcement was made that changed the world. On January 9, 2007, while presenting at the Mac World Expo, Steve Jobs stood on a stage and introduced the first ever iPhone.

Then, the phone combined touch controls with internet searching and browsing on a 3.5 inch screen. It weighs 4.8 ounces, had a 2-megapixel camera and ran on iOS 1. Buyers could choose from either a 4 GB version or an 8 GB version for $499 and $599

During its opening weekend, Apple sold 270,000 i Phones; however, the smart phone was not released until June 29, 2007.

People check out the new iPhone on display at Mac World on January 10, 2007 in San Francisco, California. The device which is controlled by a touch screen is set to launch in June 2007. It will play music, surf the Internet and deliver voice mail and e-mail. After rising 6 percent on Tuesday, Apple shares gained 4.79 percent, to close at $97 on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Wednesday.
