Police in Ebonyi State yesterday foiled an attempt to bomb the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat and the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abakaliki, the state capital by suspected miscreants.

It was gathered that the timely intervention of the police bomb disposal squad that detonated the suspected devise saved the situation.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Chris Anyanwu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) while confirming the incident, said the miscreants placed a fabricated incendiary device that looked like Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the two offices but they were safely detonated by the police bomb squad.

The PPRO said: “I want to inform you that the Ebonyi State Police Command have observed with dismay that mischief-makers with the intension of heating up the polity, have resorted to acts capable of causing panic among the public. Such mischievous individuals fabricate what we call incendiary devices in form of IED and go about hauling them into some targeted premises. Two of such incidents were recorded at the APC party secretariat at Kpirikiri and INEC headquarters in the state over the weekend.

“However, the timely intervention of the police bomb disposal squad in the command salvaged the situation as no explosive was recorded. The police command, therefore, warns such miscreants to desist from such antics or meet their waterloo, while all law abiding Ebonyians are enjoined to go about their legitimate duties without fear of harm or molestation as police in the state have taken further measures to stem the tide of this ugly development.”

It was gathered that the APC office along Kipirikpiri Road, which also served as the campaign office of the governorship candidate of the party, Senator Julius Ucha, was attacked by unknown persons with an object suspected to be explosive.
One of the aides to Senator Ucha, John Ekeh said the incident occurred on Sunday night when they heard a loud sound at the back of the building at about 10. 45pm.

Meanwhile, Senator Ucha has expressed concern over increasing plots by some political parties in the state to cause violence and loss of lives and property. He described the failed attempt to bomb his campaign office as one of the negative signs of what some political parties were planning to do in the state during and after the elections.
