Good job Prof. Ojah. For those who would like to switch to something oil-related; you can get your masters in geology with a concentration in paleontology. Several great geologists have a botany background.
True. I once hrd a geology lecturer telling his students that botanists are takin dia place in d oil sector

Yes, Boss of all the bosses have spoken.... I pay homage sir.!..

Guys, If you really wanna know much about Geology-Paleontology-paleobotany.. We got a great boss in the house,. He's also making it big abroad(according to a researched-statistical data grin). He's a great Geologist/Paleontologist.. Boss, I hail once again sir!!..

My application at ETSU in Msc Biology (Paleontology concentration) got denied cos of my low GRE 290 (below 300).. I knew already but I was just expecting God's miracle.. Though I could have re-written the exam but I felt I might not meet up with deadline.. Anyways, its how God wants it, for every disappointment is always a blessing in disguise.. Still waiting for other decisions tho, but I wish my first choice course had clicked..
Wat is GRE

Ohh lanscapping, Establishment of lawns, creation of gardens? (That's Horticulture).. Horticulturist should also have a diverse knowledge in ecology,.because the ecology/vegetation of plants/flowers and where best they thrive must be known, The environmental conditions that affect them positively/negatively must also be known. As you have said you have a zeal for horticulture, even when you being an artist is an added advantage, you just have to work well on the line,. I have so many friends from UNILAG, who are environmentalist/horticulturist, and they are hitting it now, getting contracts from Lagos state government, Oyo state govt, Ondo state govt, and Delta state govt on Landscaping, beautification and maintenance. I also had my IT in a well-known horticultural company in Lagos. Here, I can vividly tell you I gained alot, ranging from tree-planting exercise/campaign organised by Gov fashola, to Creation & Beautification of lawns/gardens..

Also going for PhD doesn't make one to fully venture into lecturing,. So many PhD holders out there not lecturing. Well, To me, I prefer lecturing than any other jobs. And most foreign country (e.g USA, Canada) offers fundings in form of assistantships to almost every (if not every)of their PhD students PROVIDED their requirements (Transcript with required cgpa, TEST score , recommendation letter, SOP, etc) are met.
thanks a lot bro. You're like the course adviser/mentor that my department never seriously had.

Hi all..
Let's talk about the specialties and career opportunities in botany...This plant science field is so broad and there are many specialization... Botanist interested in ecology study interaction of plants with other organisms and the environment, . other filed botanists search to find new species or perform experiments to discover how plant grow under different condition. Some botanist study the structure of plants, they may work in the field, concentrating on the pattern of the whole plant. Others use microscope to study the most detailed fine structure of individual cells..Many botanist conduct experiments to determine how plant convert simple chemical compounds into more complex chemicals...They also study how genetic information in DNA controls plant development and the process that occur on a time scale ranging from fractions of a second in individual cell to those that unfold over eons of the evolutionary time

The results of botanical research increase and improve our supply of medicine, foods, fibre, building materials and other plant products..
*Conservationist use botanical knowledge to help manage parks, forest, rangelands and wilderness area
*Public health and environmental protection professionals depend on their understanding of plant science to help solve solution problems.

So one of the most significant aspects of botany is the number of different specialties and career opportunities from which one can choose...(phycology, mycology, ecology, systematics, paleobotany, palynology, taxonomy, biotechnology, pathology, horticulture, physiology to molecular biology-DNA barcording)...
Among careers available to a person who enjoys the outdoors are positioned as an ecologist , taxonomist, cconservationist, forester or plant explorer. A person with a mathematical background might find biophysics, developmental botany, genetics, modelling or system ecology to be exciting field..someone with interest in chemistry might become a plant physiologist, plant biochemist, molecular biologist or a chemotaxonomist...A botanist with a passion for investigation would find forensic botany quite rewarding.

*Employment opportunities usually depend on educational training and experience. Job positions in botany are expected to increase from time to time because of the unique role of palnts in human affairs.
Educational institutions which employ botanists range from secondary school, colleges of education, polytechnic to universities. Teaching botany is a very challenging and rewarding career..
Federal and state govt need botanists in many different field e.g ministries of agriculture , environment , education, petroleum resources, science and technology , water resources & rural developmnt , national planning, custom service , justice(as forensic expert) and many dept , agencies and parastatals..

Finally, Botanists are also job creators and employers of labour . As a result of great diversity of plants and plant products, botanist initiate and sustain various small and medium scale industries based entirely on plants derivatives such as herbal shops, ornamental plant shop and wood carving(Lol, i knw most pple won't wanna go into this)

Bro.. I actually don't understand your question But I guess you meant "Your lecturer asked you to write the importance of clavicep to plant" and you also ask if they are smut fungi?? Right?...

First, Ignore whatever note/textbook you've been reading that says Clavicep purpurea is in family Teliomycetes(where did you see that from?, I'm sure its not from your lecturer). In Mycology, The hierarchy order starts with kingdom(fungi) - Division - SubDivision- Class (ends with Cetes)- Order (ends with ales) - Family (ends with aceae)- Genius - Species. Teliomycetes isn't a family BuT a Class, And its one of those classes in Basidiomycota. I think its only one Order under Teliomycetes that is smut fungi which is Ustilaginales (Ustilago sp) and the other is rust(I can really remember). But Clavicep purpurea is not even in the subdivision Basidiomycota talkless of being in Teliomycetes. Besides, Basidiomycota has. basidiospores while the spores in claviceps is ascospores, so its in Ascomycota under Family Clavicepitaceae. Though they both commonly attack the grasses family (poaceae). So bro, Claviceps pupurea isn't smut fungi. The smut are Ustilagos(Ustilago maydis, Ustilago avennae). You can research well on this by asking another mycology lecturer or reading thru any biological/pathological journals..

Also, i don't understand what you mean by importance of clavicep to plant.. What importance should it have again if not "causes disease".. Or you mean economic importance of fungi generally. If yes, you should have been taught that na OR you'll see numerous of that on Google.. Just check.

BTW which school is KSU?

God bless you Op and all that have conteibuted immensly concerning this course. I've just being offered admission thru DE to study Botany (though i chose Microbilogy), and I've been trying to get more knwledhe concerning botany as a carrear. I need more advice on this course sirs and also, hopefully when i want to enroll for Msc what course can i opt into. ( though thinking of going for Pharmacognosy for Msc).

What other course is advisable to go for in Msc judgin to the fact that employment opportunity in the country.

Looking forward to hearing ur response(s).

Going for pharmacognosy in your Msc isn't bad.. Its a very well-competitive course..You'd be taught so many perquisites such as Psychoactive drug plants, plants primary and secondary metabolites (plant biochemistry), Ethnobotany, forensic botany and many more..Pharmacognosy dept in UNILAG do accept graduates who are well grounded in these mentioned area above from any school provided you have the required CGPA. But I'd like to say Climb the ladder step after step, you just gained an admission, think of how you gonna blast with a good grade. Then Do as you think, come out in flying colors before thinking about this.. All the best bro..

I must say, im a little relieved concerning the course with the way i've been enlightened to see the prospect of it in a wider perspective than the course 'Botany' itself. At some point, i thought of declining the offer to study botany due to some reasons like it not good here in Nigeria job-wise coupled with the fact that i disliked Plant Pathology back then during my ND days not knowing i will eventually find my self in a branch of the course i disliked *lol*.

Thanks very much anyways.

There's no Msc Forensic Botany in both Nigeria and abroad, But forensic botany is always been taught in Msc courses like Forensic Science & Forensic Biology,. Some schools abroad do teaches it as Dendrochronology..

Bro you're very right.. I had that same orientation back then in 100level, and it affected my GPA likewise every other students who's felt the way as me.. But I found it interesting in 200level (2nd semester), where I had one of the best result, All A's and One B. How did I do this?. I sat myself down, and I had a deep think about life after school in Nigeria today, I made all the course friendly, I dedicated much of my time in studying which I never did in 100level.. Plant Pathology, mycology, Plant physiology, Plant Ecology, Phycology were so easy unlike how it was painted before we did those courses..

All I'm trying to say in excess is Much time need to be dedicated in your studies..Embrace those courses and make a good grade out of it.. You'd be where you wanna be

Forensic Botany hasn't gotten that strength to be taught alone as a course(Dept), but it can only taught as a course(subject~ BTN 00000). Its is fused sometimes with molecular biology under forensic science OR forensic Biology.. Polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and other PCR-based techniques which they make use of in molecular biology are also use in amplification of plants DNA, and these are helpful in providing a genuine evidence in a crime scene..
