Some Failed Biblical Prophecies by huxley(m): 10:49pm On Dec 22, 2008
Just wanted to find out if there are/were any biblical prophecies that have recently come true.  As a reminder, here are some that have failed to actualise.

Ezekiel predicted Babylon would conquer Egypt and was wrong.

Ezekiel predicts that Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon will conquer Egypt utterly destroying it, slaying and scattering it’s people, and that it will stay uninhabited for 40 years.

In 568 BCE Nebuchadrezzar tried to conquer Egypt and Egypt survived with no apparent damage.

Aahmes ruled for another generation over a prosperous Egypt and lived to see Nebuchadrezzar die. No Egyptians were scattered or dispersed.

(Ezek 29:10 NRSV) therefore, I am against you, and against your channels, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Ethiopia.

(Ezek 29:11 NRSV) No human foot shall pass through it, and no animal foot shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years.

(Ezek 29:12 NRSV) I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among desolated countries; and her cities shall be a desolation forty years among cities that are laid waste. I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them among the countries.

(Ezek 30:10 NRSV) Thus says the Lord GOD: I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt, by the hand of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon.

(Ezek 30:11 NRSV) He and his people with him, the most terrible of the nations, shall be brought in to destroy the land; and they shall draw their swords against Egypt, and fill the
land with the slain.

————————————————————————-

Ezekiel predicts the destruction of Tyre (Tyrus) by Nebuchadrezzar and is wrong again.

Ezekiel incorrectly predicts that the island of Tyre (Tyrus) will be utterly destroyed and "made a bare rock" which will "never be rebuilt".

At the time of the prediction, it seemed like to be a sure thing, but 13 years of seige later Nebuchadrezzar gives up. The Island of Tyre is not destroyed or even conquered. It is not made
"a bare rock" that will "never be rebuilt".

Ezekiel admits his error in Ezek 29:17

(Here the conquest of Trye looks like a sure thing so Ezekiel makes his prediction)

(Ezek 26:1 NRSV) In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

(Ezek 26:7 NRSV) For thus says the Lord GOD: I will bring against Tyre from the north King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, king of kings, together with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a great
and powerful army.

(Ezek 26:14 NRSV) I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for spreading nets. You shall never again be rebuilt, for I the LORD have spoken, says the Lord GOD.

(Ezek 27:32 NRSV) In their wailing they raise a lamentation for you, and lament over you: "Who was ever destroyed like Tyre in the midst of the sea?

(13 years of futile effort by Nebuchadrezzar later…)

(Ezek 29:17 NRSV) In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

(Here Ezekiel admits he was wrong)

(Ezek 29:18 NRSV) Mortal, King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre; every head was made bald and every shoulder was rubbed bare; yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had expended against it.

(So he then predicts that God decides to give Egypt to him instead, another Ezekiel prophecy that completely failed)

————————————————————————-

Micah predicts the destruction of Jerusalem (which at the time was about to be invaded by Sennacherib and seemed inevitable) blaming the destruction on the corruption of the priesthood of Judah.

Jerusalem was sieged, but the destruction didn’t happen.

A century later Jeremiah quotes Micah and tries to excuse the failed prophecy by saying that "the Lord changed his mind" about that destruction.

(Micah 3:12 NRSV) Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.

(~100 years and no destruction later…)

(Jer 26:18 NRSV) "Micah of Moresheth, who prophesied during the days of King Hezekiah of Judah, said to all the people of Judah: ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.’

(Jer 26:19 NRSV) Did King Hezekiah of Judah and all Judah actually put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and entreat the favor of the LORD, and did not the LORD change his mind about the disaster that he had pronounced against them? …

————————————————————————-

The prophet Daniel incorrectly states that in the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim, Nebuchadnezzar will conquer Judah.

The third year of Jehoiakim’s reign was 606 BCE, at which time Nebuchadnezzar was not yet king of Babylon. It was in 597 BCE that Nebuchadnezzar takes Jerusalem, by then Jehoiakim had died.

(Dan 1:1 NRSV) In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

(Dan 1:2 NRSV) The Lord let King Jehoiakim of Judah fall into his power, as well as some of the vessels of the house of God. These he brought to the land of Shinar, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his gods.

————————————————————————-

Jeremiah incorrectly predicts 70 years for the Babylonian exiles but they only lasted 59 years.

The 1rst exile started in 597 BCE when Nebuchadnezzar first takes Jerusalem and appoints Zedekiah king (Judah’s last king). Nebuchadnezzar has temple equipment taken away.

The start of the 2nd exile was in 586 BCE when Nebuchadnezzar takes Jerusalem a second time putting down a rebellion and destroys the temple.

The end comes in 538 BCE when Cyrus takes Babylon and ends the Babylonian kingdom. Jews are then allowed to return to Judah.

(Jer 29:10 NRSV) For thus says the LORD: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.

The following is taken from a Christian website called gracethrufaith.com. It is quite instructive. See their response about the prophecy of the destruction of Syria, highlighted in blue below. Note the date that comment was made and their take for when the prophecy would be fulfilled.

The following question came into my in box a few days ago and seemed to merit a more detailed answer that I usually have room for in our “Ask A Bible Teacher” column. Here it is.

Q. What is your opinion on the alleged ‘failed prophecies’ of the Bible listed below?

Q. What is your opinion on the alleged ‘failed prophecies’ of the Bible listed below?

A. First of all, let me say that this is what comes of letting unbelievers interpret Scriptures for us. Paul warned us that the man without the Spirit cannot accept the things of God. They’re foolishness to him, he can’t understand them because they’re spiritually discerned. (1 Cor. 2:14) I read the responses to a similar question posted on a secular site recently and had Paul’s warning confirmed once again. For people who’ve probably never studied the Book, some of the respondents certainly act like they know a lot about it.

I noticed that unbelievers often think that if something is in the Old Testament, it has to be written about our past, as if there’s no future fulfillment to Old Testament prophecy. This causes them to reject our view that there are only two kinds of prophecy, the kind that has been fulfilled and the kind that will be.

God Himself said, “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times what is still to come. What I have said, that will I bring about, what I have planned, that will I do.” (Isaiah 46:10-11). But unbelievers think it’s a cop out when we tell them a “failed” prophecy is for the future, even though most Biblical prophecy speaks about a time still future to us.

I also found that they give more credence to man’s word than to God’s. In other words, they read the Bible and then look for something man has written for confirmation. If they don’t find it they assume the Bible is wrong. It’s the reverse of the way believers approach things. We know that if man’s history differs from the Bible then man’s history is either wrong or incomplete.

With that, let’s have a look at the five “failed” prophecies that have been cited and see what the real story is.

1. Deut. 7:1, God Will Give Israel 7 Nations. Joshua 15:63, He Is Unable To Drive Some Out.
Joshua 15:63 specifically refers to the Jebusites of Jerusalem, one of the 7 nations mentioned in Deut. 7:1. It says that the Tribe of Judah was unable to dislodge the Jebusites from Jerusalem. But Judges 1:8 says, “The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.”

As per their agreement, the Tribe of Judah then went with the tribe of Simeon to capture the rest of their two allotments instead of remaining in Jerusalem and in their absence, the Jebusites returned. They also had difficulty with the Philistines in the southern coastal areas. And other tribes experienced problems with the people in their areas as well. All this happened after the major conquest had ended, “the land had rest from war” (Josh. 11:23) and the tribes went into their own allotted lands.

In Judges 2:1-4 we learn that previous to that the Angel of the Lord had criticized them for their lack of faith in completing the conquest of the Land, and withdrew His supernatural assistance. He had promised them victory over every enemy they chose to engage, (Josh 10:25) but they lacked the faith to make it so. (This is something unbelievers don’t understand. It wasn’t that God lacked the ability, but that His people lacked the faith. Of course they don’t understand this because they don’t understand faith.)

That being the case, He said, in effect, “Fine. If you want them living among you, so be it. But they’ll be thorns in your sides and their gods a snare to you.” (Judges 2:1-3) It wasn’t until the time of King David, a warrior of supernatural faith, that the Israelites finally possessed all the land that God had promised them. The prophecy did not fail.

2. Isaiah 17:1 Damascus Will Be Destroyed
Every scholar who takes the Bible literally agrees. This prophecy is in our future. Many believe it’ll likely be fulfilled as early as the summer of this year (2007). As evidence of this, here’s an excerpt from a report from the Jerusalem Newswire that I received this week. (June 24, 2007)

“Syria is making concrete preparations for war with Israel, and is anticipating such a conflict this coming summer.

According to reports carried in the Arab media Friday, the Assad government has already ordered, and carried out, the removal of the Government Archives and State Archives from Damascus to other locations.

Reports have circulated during the past two months that Syria is preparing its SCUD missile arsenal for war, including the VX gas warheads it has been working on producing for several years. It is widely believed that any attempt by Syria to introduce non-conventional warheads into a conflict with Israel will be met by an Israeli response that will destroy Damascus.” (www.jnewswire.com/article/1969)

3. Isaiah 19:5 The Nile Will Dry Up.
Many view the fulfillment of this prophecy in the construction of the Aswan Dam by the Soviets in the early 1960’s. When it became operational in 1965, it forever changed the economy of Egypt for the worse. For millennia, Egyptians had relied on the Nile’s annual flooding to renew the land and enrich the waters of the southern Mediterranean. It had been the most important event regulating the fertility of the region. The dam stopped all that.

In addition to forever changing Egypt’s agricultural industry, the decrease in fertility of the southeastern Mediterranean waters caused by the dam has had a catastrophic effect on marine fisheries. In spite of the dam’s benefits, such as cheap electricity, some have said that the best way to restore Egypt’s economy would be to blow up the Aswan Dam. A comparison of the economic and environmental effects of the Aswan Dam and the prophecy of Isaiah 19:5-10 clearly show that the prophecy did not fail.

4. Jeremiah 50:39 Babylon will be uninhabited.
For many years prophecy scholars believed this prophecy to have been fulfilled. And then came the first Gulf War. People were astonished to see Babylon standing there on the Banks of the Euphrates, rebuilt by Saddam Hussein. While there’s no comparison to the great city of Nebuchadnezzar, it does exist, and though it’s population had dwindled to as low as a few thousand when the Greeks built Baghdad to become the major river port city of the region, Babylon has not yet become uninhabited. But 6 chapters of the Bible are devoted to its destruction, Isaiah 13-14, Jeremiah 50-51, and Revelation 17-18. It’s clearly a prophecy yet future to us.

5. Ezekiel 29:10-13 Egypt Will Be Uninhabited For Forty Years (after being destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, Ezekiel 29:19)
I believe that this is a case of misunderstood context. There is no reason to connect the prophecy of Egypt’s 40 year desolation, given by Ezekiel on January 7, 587BC, with his prophecy of Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest of the Egyptians which was given on April 26, 571BC. The two are completely different utterances, spoken 16 years apart, and in reverse order of the “failed” prophecy claim. Nebuchadnezzar did defeat the Egyptian Army at the Battle of Carchemesh in 606BC and subsequently carried off the wealth of Egypt, as Ezekiel’s 2nd prophecy says, but the land of Egypt has not yet lain desolate for 40 years. (I guess you can say that when it does, it will have happened after Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest.) The prophecy has not failed.

Some of you may be asking, “What’s the big deal if a few of the thousands of prophecies of the Bible didn’t come true?” Well, the big deal is this. If God couldn’t deliver on His promise to the men of Judah, or to Nebuchadnezzar, how can you be sure that He’ll able to deliver for you?

You’ve staked your eternity on the belief that He can perform on His promises. By the time you know for sure that your faith was justified, it’ll be too late. You’ll be dead.

None of us has ever seen Him. All we have is His word that He’ll come back for us and save us from judgment. He knows we have to trust Him for this, so He gave us an unblemished record to justify our faith. It’s called prophecy. I guarantee you that in just a few short years, there won’t be anyone left who still believes that God doesn’t do what He says He’ll do. But then, instead of ridiculing Him for not doing what He said, they’ll be cursing Him for doing it. (Rev. 16:10-11)

46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

A failed prophecy was that the Death of Jesus will wash away all sins from the world?

So if Jesus died for christians sins then why are people still sinning?

Why are there wars and innocent children dying? Whose God is responible for all the Natural disaster's that take place?

@Kola Oloye: Jesus will come back, for sure. I agree with you on this matter. He will come back, of course not as a Prophet, or messenger of any kind. There is no new Messeage or prophesy from him. There was never essentially any new Message, in the first place, any way.

When he comes back, not as a christian, which is a strange thing to him anyway, and not as a Temple or Synagogue going Jew any way. He will be back as a follower, of whom? Muhammad bin Abdallah (AS)! He will be part of the Muslim ummah, bowing his face to One True God. That is true submission.

Did you get it, ~Lady~? Or you think he will be back as Christian, which he was never, anyway?

Now Huxley, can you find any failed Prophesy of Muhammad (AS)? I will tell you; none.

I dont write finnish. Evidently, you can read english. If you can, you would have seen where I throw out a challenge about talking shoes. Or you can read, but you are playing possum. Again, open your eyes. Take up the challenge. And instead of just trying to be funny, try to be real.

. . Let’s see what the Koran (76:12-21) promises the righteous:

garments of silk
reclining on raised thrones
neutral weather, days won’t be hot, nights won’t be cold
bunches of fruit
silver plates and crystal glasses
a cup of wine mixed (with) zanjabil (ginger)
youth of perpetual freshness in green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade
bracelets of silver
a drink of wine

The word “silk” is “hariyrin” in Arabic and means, “dressed silk, wholly composed of silk.” Silk is animal fiber produced by certain insects as building material for cocoons and webs. This insect is called the silkworm which is a caterpillar of of the silkmoth, and the cocoon is the shell it constructs to protect itself during its growth from a caterpillar to a moth.

Because an emerging moth would break the cocoon filament, the larva is killed in the cocoon by steam or hot air so that the thread is preserved intact for commercial use which is made of one continuous white or yellow silken thread, averaging 1,000 yards

So now Muslims rejoice in the fact that they will be wearing silk garments that will be provided for them in paradise; however, at the expense of the homes and lives of one of Allah’s creations. Not only that, about 3,000 years ago the silkworm eggs were smuggled to Persia from which has become one of the largest producers of raw silk along with Red China, India, and South Korea. So, if silk is produced and manufactured in the Far East, the the silk that is mentioned in the Koran, which is mentioned many times in reference to paradise, is something that came from the home of an insect that lives and breeds here on Earth at a geographical point that is.

Good question. Imagine if one of your friends comes in and says his shoes just told him some important info about himself! Will you not just say na lie or thinks that he is cockle? Thats even your lonestar state of today.

Now take a throw back to over 1400 years ago of any place. Now specify it to Madina. How would you have taking it then? Today NIKE has produced a digitally talking shoe. He tells the wearer many things about what he has done concerning exercise, which is the reason he wore it anyway. Oh boy, eat your heart out. You better drop the fronting and come to Islam.

Kunle, thank you. But failed in one place, the silk on earth will not be the same in Paradise. Silk, because it is apriced clothing, and just like brocade is also better tha polyester, are what are expeceted as reward in Mercy in Paradise. You want polyester? Wear polyester. In my days of ignorance, I used to wear suit in heavy silk. I love its movement and how it breath. When the wind blows, lightly, its a beautiful thing to see how the opulent wear exagerate my movement.

You did not however touched up on the wine that will not intosticate ad will not bring up a headache for those who drink! Thats wine is also different what gives you a drunk a banging headache on earth. What about the foods. Similitude of what is the best on earth, yet not exactly the same.

Do you eat man and wear clothing? Know that those things that keep you alive and what prevnt us from calling you a nude or samelessly naked man thereby saying that you are crazy, are from God. You deprive the Cow or fish or chicken, etc and fruits and vegetables and grains and tubers, etc you eat of their lives. Or are you a carion or scavenger?

Kunle, you are a funny man.

Take this one for size; what about the talking shoe? It came about, you know. Watch the Nike talking shoe on youtube.

LMBO!!!!!! WHEN U CAN REASON AND LEARN WHAT CHRISTIAN IS U CAN ATTEMPT TO HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH ME.

@Olabowale

You saying you believe you are going to get all the listed items when you get to heaven?
garments of silk
reclining on raised thrones
neutral weather, days won’t be hot, nights won’t be cold
bunches of fruit
silver plates and crystal glasses
a cup of wine mixed (with) zanjabil (ginger)
youth of perpetual freshness in green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade
bracelets of silver
a drink of wine

If heaven is a spiritual place, why would you need of these items in heaven?

This must be a physical heaven refered to here would you say bearing in mind all these items are physical items?

I wonder if it is going to be heaven for the seven damsels?  wink

So this is the kind of ignorance these people are going on with saying they will get bunches of fruit and a drink of wine in heaven?
