SEVEN WAYS JESUS WOULD VOTE

Elections have significant implications for the future of Nigeria and Christians.  In every election, the effects of our vote will be felt by our children and generations after.

First, we need to ask the Holy Spirit to guide our thinking, and pray for wisdom in our voting decisions. We also need to intercede for those running in positions for or against the values we hold closely as believers (1 Tim. 2:1).

How do you think Christ will vote if He were here today? And practically speaking too – guaranteed that He would do all these under the leading of the Holy Spirit.

1. He would vote as led by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1: 23 -26)

2. He will vote by knowledge - Hosea 4:6a:  “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. “ I believe that He would be informed and vote for candidates and issues which will to the best degree possible uphold God’s purposes for Government upon the heart. What are these purposes?
- Ability to protect law-abiding citizens and punish law-breakers (1 Pet. 2:14, Romans 13:4)
- Ability to promote peace and order in society (1 Tim. 2:1-2)
- Accountability to God and submission to His spiritual authorities on earth (Dan. 4:17, 25, 32. 34 - 37; 5:21, John 19:11; 2 Kings 22:2)

3. He would vote based on the plans and commitment of the candidates in the areas of helping the needy, caring for widows and orphans, taxes, the economy, freedom of religion, tribalism, education, marriage, family, homosexuality, the nation of Israel and peace for Jerusalem, war, national defense, and more.

4. He would vote based on the qualification of the candidates. If He has qualifications for bishop and deacons (1 Tim 3:1; Acts 6:3), He has for kings, rulers and leaders.

5. He would vote a candidate who is chosen from among his own people (Deut. 17: 15), who will not multiply horses (i.e. power and influence) to himself (v. 16), would not multiply wives to himself (v. 17a), will not greatly multiple silver and gold for himself (v. 17b), and who shall make a copy of the law for himself and read it regularly (v. 18 -20).

6. He would vote based on the integrity of their words and consider their past record. Proverbs 12:19 - The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

7. He would vote based in their association. Proverbs 13:20: He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. Proverbs 14:7:  Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

We must remember we are not voting for perfect people, but certainly some people are better than others and the Holy Spirit can give us spiritual insight as to who these men and women might be.
