The Christian Association of Nigeria and the
Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria have remained
quiet over an allegation that some pastors have
collected N6bn to campaign against the All
Progressives Congress presidential candidate,
Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)
As of press time, both CAN and its affiliate, PFN,
had yet to issue any statement on the allegation.
When our correspondent visited CAN’s website
on Thursday, there was no reference or press
release on the allegation that has started
generating controversy.
The most recent press statement by CAN, posted
on July 5, 2012, was a call on the Federal
Government to neutralise the attack on its
members in the North or lose the cooperation of
the Christian community in the fight against
Boko Haram.
The website of the national chapter of PFN was
not accessible. And there was no statement in
the mainstream media that was credited to its
executive to the effect that the body was aware
of the indictment.
The Lagos State Chapter of PFN, whose
webpage was functional, said nothing neither.
The information the site operator described as
recent was a statement that was posted on July
17, 2013.
CAN and PFN might not be active on social
media. Yet, a number of accounts on Facebook
are operated by the youth wings and campus
chapters of the bodies. None of such pages that
were visited made a statement on the allegation.
Though social media users have expressed
divergent views on the allegation, the majority
called on CAN to seek further information,
including names of pastors that were involved.
Otherwise, they urged the religious body to
publicly clear itself if the allegation was actually
false.
Posting on Facebook, Agbonna Emma challenged
CAN to take action on the matter before it was
too late. He said the allegation could taint the
image of the Christian community if swept under
the carpet.
Rivers State Governor and Director General of the
Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation,
Rotimi Amaechi, had alleged that the Peoples
Democratic Party had given unnamed pastors
N6bn to campaign against the APC.
Responding to the allegation, the General
Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of
God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, warned anybody
who collected such money to return it in order to
avoid the wrath of God.
Many other church leaders have yet to mention
the controversial issue on their pages.
The controversy has brought with it a
condemnation of what many consider as
excessive politicisation of religion and hypocrisy
among the clerics.
Handlers of the campaign of President Goodluck
Jonathan, the PDP presidential candidate, have
responded differently. They dismissed the
allegation as a fabrication.
On his Twitter page, Femi Fani-Kayode described
the allegation as a “dirty lie.
“Amaechi has alleged that pastors were paid
N6bn to campaign against Buhari? What a dirty
lie. He has sold his soul to the devil,” he twitted.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and
Public, Dr. Reuben Abati, also dismissed it,
regretting that Amaechi had not changed.
Amid the controversy on Thursday, Buhari urged
Nigerians to get ready for their appointment with
“change” on February 14.
He said on his Twitter handle that the PDP
members were desperate in their efforts to retain
power in the face of overwhelming
disappointment with their leadership.
Tweeting photos of campaign rallies in different
parts of the country, Buhari said Nigerians were
desirous of a departure from the past and that
he was determined to give them the change they
needed. www.punchng.com/i-punch/can-pfn-quiet-over-n6bn-bribery-scandal/

Everybody was having their ears widely opened just like a satellite dish just to hear what would be said that they said. Now they are silent and it has become an issue.

Silence is not always golden.....they have a moral obligation to publicly address the allegation and if their hands are clean, God would certainly vindicate them!

That's one reason I love Pastor Adeboye for....... He deny it that same day with message that anyone that took the money should return it or he is going to face the wrath of God
