Most first class and average 2.1 candiates are bunch of crammers...the companies discovered that of-recent...there are difrrent between school work and office work....back then in school, the first and second class upper have there way.....buh in the labour market, they hide.

I graduated with a 2.2 and I'm now working with a federal agency now. It's not all about your class of degree,it's being at the right place at the right time.

I think i need to type something because my testimony may encourage someone in the house.

just try your best and be prayerful. I gained admission after 10yrs l left sec sch. I read like mad dog during my undergraduate days and still came out with 2.2. Not only that I was above 30yrs. Please read Micah 4:5.
No connection, nothing. My parent are retired teachers but God have mercy on me. It was during my part 4 industrial training I was privileged to work with a company that pays pea nut and later the company sent me for training in abroad. God changed my profile. I don't know what to say but to say your time will surely come. The race is not for the ........Always try your best. Nobody has a road map to success if it is good, it is God and if it is God, it is good

Classes of degree are overrated.Remember it's just a fine line between 3.49 and 3.50.
Anyway my case is interesting. Had BSc. in Applied Geophysics with a 2.2 and later had my Masters in Exploration Geophysics.
Of course I couldn't find a job in Oil company and I was basically searching and searching for any job (not necessarily oil and gas) in the streets of Lagos. For good 3 years, I was without a job. I basically lived in 5 different places during these period squatting while trying my hands on menial jobs. That was 2 years and 10 months ago from today. I don't think anyone has printed CVs or sent CVs online more than I did.
Na wa ooo, Hadiza even left me then.Sincerely it was painful but quite understandable. Babes these days wouldn't want to persevere with a struggling guy.

To cut it short, I got a job with a global research company, though not in line with my discipline. In the space of 2 and half years, I got promoted twice and as I type this, I am in another country in africa where I was transferred to manage one of the company departments in our branch there till Dec 2016. Trust me, a whole lot has changed. Company-paid two bedroom apartment, official car and all other added benefits, good pay as well.
A couple of people on NL know me one on one, so they can attest to this. Why not, I don be member since 2008 smiley
Before i travelled, I cant but stop along CMD road, stare and smile. For those who know CMD road Magodo, there's this new school beside phcn office, called honeyland, believe it or not, I drilled the borehole in that school with some guys I hired. Manual drilling till we got water, under the harsh sun, all for how much. Now it's just a story.
Hard work pays.
Please guys don't start quoting bible or religion, I don't believe in all that. So don't say it was the work of mr A or B. Just take the story as it is. Thank you.

Abeg, you guys should just stop all these degree and class of degree talk already. It's annoying! After putting all effort to graduate well and be distinguished, up till now 2.1 has not fetched any good job.

Bact then, I have this female friend from another dept., on the verge of 3rd class. I had to start studying with her so she could be motivated. She finally graduated with a low 2.2 and now she is working. Her uncle is a minister, and now "she dey hardly pick my call again sef".

I know of another mate who graduated with a 3rd class, but now working with a big oil company(I dunno know her position sha).

No by 2.1 or 1st class o(but then whatever that is worth doing at all is worth doing well - one of my mantras).

I made a decision not to "struggle" for job again after I almost lost my life last year, when going for an aptitude test in Lagos from Abuja(EY).

Robbers and other people with bad intentions go on a mission and come back successfully, why should my life be endanger when I had not evil intention, but was only trying to take advantage of an opportunity that would better my life.

I have always gone an extra mile just to be outstanding in all that I do. Right now, I think it's high time God should please proove himself. I have surrendered on to him because, right now, it seems my strength can't help me no more.
Here comes the BIG QUESTION. . . How did you get that 2.1 of yours?

[quote
author=FriedPlantain post=30671778]Well my boss is a 2.2 graduate
from Unilag, she currently heads the finance department of an oil and
gas company filled with first class and 2.1 graduates. To make things
more interesting, she didn't even study anything related to finance in
school, she studied Estate management but she didn't let that deter her.
she has worked in a couple of multinational companies at the top level
with her so called "2.2" certificate and she is still in her thirties.
smiley

So OP stop looking down on yourself because you didn't make a 2.1 or
first class, there are thousand more 2.2 graduates excelling in their
field. You just strive to be the best and give your 101% whenever you
are given the chance.

It isn't by class o...I'm a 2.1 graduate still hoping things will change even if it's to keep body and soul together, whereas there are so many graduates with lesser grades that are gainfully employed. God makes all things beautiful in His own time.

Mr. man, I typed what you quoted from my mobile phone. Though, I am not a big fan of typing, but I just decided to at least bare my mind for once. So please, pardon all my blunders. Hope you understood what I wrote shall.

Mind you, I can defend my degree any time, any day. Whether in my dream or when just waking up. But sadly, you are not in any position to question that.

@All, thanks for your encouragement.
Shalom!

Nairaland Business section has a lot of start up tutorial. Try to visit the section and read through the one your strength and knowledge will relate with easily.

@my Oga, Amen thanks and God Bless.

I have benefited immensely from that section especially from your niche, importation. God bless you and the likes of YMod, Thespecialone, Tutucious(who stood by me when I first made a bold step) and other big names. You guys should keep it up! You have touched many lives without knowing, especially some of who are not too fond of posting comments.
