As a friend of Nigeria I become saddened when I hear others talk about how corrupt it is. How you simply can't trust Nigerians because they're always looking for a way to get over on you.

One news station I watch in the morning even had a whole broadcast special on watching out for the scam artists from Nigeria who send phony emails.

I would like to change the mostly negative outlook on Nigeria and Nigerians.

What would you change?

I agree with you. It would be really nice if the rest of the world could see that there's more to Nigeria than corruption. it would be nice if the 419 stigma could stop being a problem for Nigerian businessmen who want to use the internet to run legitimate businesses. It would be even better if the problem of corruption in our government and police force could be radically reduced.

However, the one thing I'd like to change about Nigeria is the NEPA problem (sorry, PHCN). If I could change one thing about Nigeria, it would be to make constant, cheap, public electricity available to every Nigerian!

one thing i would love in the Gods african own country is the the damn currency man,can you believe it a pound£ is equivalent to 255naira,men that is shit....

The relative denomination of the currency is not important (it is very easy for our government to come up with a new currency called 'NairaPlus' which is equal to 1000 Naira). What is important is the day-to-day stability of the currency, and I think we have that now.

What i think should be done is for US to change (i mean the youth). Cos no abortion after the baby has been born but there still more to do to the one inside. You can teach your baby right from the womb, so i think if the youth could change then all will change. We have tomorow, if we are corrupt then it will last Eternity.

The best way to change the whole is to change yourself (that is your thinking). It will be a strenous task try to change some1 else.

If we can change then inevitably our community will be affected.

I would make philosophy a mandatory subject in all education systems, so all people are fully aware of the laws of causation, to the point where it completely influences their every decision.

There is indeed a very pressing need to teach people proper logical thinking skills. An introduction to the scientific method (not the results of science) would go a long way as well and of course some basic knowledge of probability would help as well

This would people help to make informed decisions about every aspect of their life., instead of them relying on hearsay, fear, witchcraft and other [b]magical [/b]thinking

Recently a professor was arrested over corruption. hun? Didnt this man educated enough? I think he should know all laws or science and the likes. But he failed morally.

If we can improve our moral standard... change our think and our personality will change... because he makes up the entity. So, as I said earlier... personal development matters... what I will offer is personal development to help as much as possibile to help people develop their thinking and believe in themselves.

Education as such is not sufficient to develop a sense of critical thinking. There are several scholary subjects though that lend themselves better to develop these techniques. And yes, science does not equal morality. Science only explains the world, it does not provide meaning or purpose in itself, but it is the best possible foundation to start from.

Humans are social animals and morality arises from their interactions. The system, together with socialisation and inate abilities determine the outcome, change one of the elements and you will have a different result. The unbalanced political and social system in Nigeria is the problem and that's where you should work on. In a population, there is always undesired behavior. The proportion of undesired behavior is mostly determined by the system (e.g. you'll always have sociopathic killers, but during wartime and lawlessness, these behaviors are no longer surpressed and come out in full

Working on your personal morality is laudable, but on a societal scale it is futile. Change conditions to encourage desirable behavior, that's the key

To have discussed this issue means that there will surely be a solution to this problem. So we all have a stake lets start little by little..(well its started already) and Nigeria will be good!

I'd like to change the way the skool system is set up. Seriously, the workload is insane. No wonder I didn't like most of my classes. And the beating doesn't help at all. Now I ain't saying students shouldn't be punished but lets keep it on the low low! 10 strokes for chewing gum is crazy. How do you expect students to want to come to school and have a positive attitude if they're going to get beaten for every little mistake? It's ok to make mistake but getting criticized for every little one ain't cool!

I'm with you. We need to learn to motivate our younger ones by promoting positive values instead of just beating and beating.

Infrastructure: Lotsa Nigerians on the reg don't have the basic necessities of life: Food Shelter and Clothing. Nigeria is a Country that's richly blessed by abundant resources but its citizens have little or nothing to show for it. In Nigeria, the rich get richer and the poor die hungry.

Our roads are so bad, there is no healthcare facility for citizens who can't afford it, Electricity is at Zero level (every1 must have a generator or else.........) There's little or no clean drinking water, there are few or no jobs and our Universities graduate Thousands of people each year........There's no security of lives and property and we do not know if the Police are our friends as they say...............
There's so much to change in Nigeria. I believe we should just start with ourselves and make the change.

Sorry, I would change 3 things not one. The Police, PHCN (NEPA) and The Leadership. These 3 things would inspire growth in Nigeria. First, I would move Dora Akinyuli to head the Police Force, or send a good incorruptible General down there and set a target for him to turn the Police around within a specified period of time. Then, I would revamp and decentralize power generation, and open it up for all and sundry. Finally, I would reorder the entry-qualification to becoming a leader. All persons seeking leadership would have to undergo psychological and logic tests before they are cleared to contest. That way, we could know who is greedy among them. If these three institutions are changed, every other things else would follow. I take my inspiration and example from Calabar here, where I live. * years ago, while I was a student here, nothing worked in this town. Then, I dreamt of the day I'd finish my course and get out of the town. I returned last year to see that so much has happened within so short a time. Now, I aspire to spend the rest of my life here. The government, which is practically doing everything humanly possible to give the place a face-lift has shown that in Nigeria, things can still work. We are not as bad as we sometimes tell ourselves. With proper leadership, we can be inspired to dream big and honest. This I believe.

I have changed my mind in the two years since I posted that. NEPA should be broken up and privatized.
