But the massacre of innocent unarmed human beings at Asana by Col. Murtala Mohammed and Major Taiwo (as they then were) was uncalled for and one too much. Ironically both died on same day, same spot from same incident. Unfortunately they took many other 'wartime heroes' after the Asaba 'wartime innocents'. RIP to all departed. |

logica: How many were killed when Murtala came to power in 1975? He was not a part of the coup directly. He only agreedbto save their necks (cos he knows the price one pays for failed coup attempt) if they failed . But he entered office through a coup and left office through a coup. One person was killed. Ask any Army General what would happen if a coup attempt goes wrong ESP if the leader removed has very loyal officers behind him. Coup are ussualy bloody. Even Murtala had blood in his hands. He it was if I am not mistaken was a strong influence in Northern soldiers killing igbo soldiers before the biafra war. |

One of the many aides of the late Biafran leader, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, resigned angrily in August 1968 after accusing him of frustrating international efforts to get food aid across to civilians caught on the wrong side of the civil war.
Robert S. Goldstein, an American and Public Relations Representative of Biafra in the USA, accused the late Ojukwu of using ‘ starving hordes as hostages to negotiate a victory in the war.
His letter of resignation, which was first published by the defunct Morning Post on August 17, 1968, resurfaced in the wake of Prof. Chinua Achebe’s damning condemnation of the role of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo during the war, especially the blockage of food to the rebels.
Goldstein, in the letter, recalled various efforts he made to swing public opinion in Europe and the USA in favour of the defunct Biafra and the subsequent recognition of such countries like Gabon,Tanzania, Zambia, Ivory Coast and Haiti until Ojukwu began to undermine those achievements by “hoping to use these unfortunates with world sympathy on their side as a tool to further your ambition to achieve war concessions at the upcoming peace talks in Addis Ababa.”
(See full letter on page 60)
He said: “Urgent telex messages were received from ‘Biafra’ telling of tens of thousands of people starving in the refugee camps, the villages, the bush country – stating if something weren’t done in the next few months over a million women, children and aged would be starved to death. I immediately contacted the Press, urgently petitioned the State Department for action on their part.
“ Food, medicine and milk were sent to the only available ports open for immediate shipment to ‘Biafra’ via land routes through Federal and Biafra territory, under the auspices of world organisations such as the International Red Cross among others.
“Then came the incredible answer from ‘Biafra’ that land corridors could not be acceptable until there was a complete ceasefire, and that an airlift was the only solution to feed the starving.
“You then appeared before the various Heads of State and representatives of the OAU at Niamey in Niger. I fully expected you to at least accept the world help that was offered your starving throngs. However, you delayed, hoping to use these unfortunates with world sympathy on their side as a tool to further your ambition to achieve war concessions at the upcoming peace talks in Addis Ababa. Thus, innocent victims continue to perish needlessly of starvation, the most agonising death that can befall any living creature.
“I cannot in all conscience serve you any longer. Nor can I be a party to suppressing the fact that your starving thousands have the food, medicine and milk available to them…..it can and is ready to be delivered through international organisations to you. Only your constant refusal has stopped its delivery.” " Gowon did not honour the Aburi Accord. austino3050: Do Know What Happened On Feb 13th 1976?
Friday the 13th, particularly when it occurs in February, is deemed a very unlucky day in Western superstition. For certain, a lot of people in the Europe and America have come to believe the day holds a lot of ill luck. Hollywood has even produced horror film franchises based on the theme. The superstition like many others, have been strengthened by individual claims of some ill event like a sack, divorce or accident happening to them either on a February 13th or a Friday the 13th. The word, friggatriskaidekaphobia, meaning, the fear of Friday the 13th derived its origins in Norse mythology.
Despite insufficient proof to support the ill-fated day, Friday, 13 February 1976 sticks out in Nigeria’s history as a day that brought a string of bad fortune to many in Nigeria. Nigeria’s Head of State was brutally assassinated on his way to his office on that fateful day. His unescorted Mercedes Benz car was riddled with bullets killing all four passengers including General Murtala Mohammed.
Luck also ran out on the perpetrators of the coup as it was botched by troops loyal to Mohammed’s regime. Buka Dimka, his sponsors and accomplices were summarily rounded up and shot in a firing squad weeks after the coup.
The most tragic tale from this Friday the 13th saga was the erroneous arrest and execution of one Col. A.D.S Wya for complicity in the coup. At the time of his arrest, Colonel Wya had been the Commander of the Corps of the Artillery and an accomplished wartime hero. His story is most unfortunate because his British wife had sought even the assistance of her home government to prove her husband’s innocence to no avail. In the end, Wya was executed. Col. Wya among a host of other officers and men were later exonerated from plotting and participating in the Dimka coup. But it was now too late. Having lost all hope and sensibility, Mrs. Wya drove into a train in Kaduna killing herself and her four children. Col. Way’s disconsolate younger brother equally committed suicide at the demise of his brother.
Indeed Friday, February 13th 1976 should never be forgotten in Nigeria
Col Wya was well served! He was such a tribalist and an ingrate. Rtd General Alexander Madiebo gave him his place in a high profile Artillery course in England just before the coup that overthrew Ironsi. Madiebo also secured accelerated promotion for him so he could cater for his British wife but he still organised an assassination squad for his loving and caring commander who had a miraculous escape. During the July 29th, 1966 coup his devilish exploits together with Major Abba Kyari where they massacred their fellow officers are well documented. So you see, he got paid back by the very evil North he served and worshipped! Case closed! |

They didn't charge at Murtala with guns, they came with drums and musical instruments for Christ sake and that blood thirsty man ordered their deaths. This history is well documented. The survivors are still alive. Someone on twitter twitted how his Father saved by his senior brother who died there. Bishop Chukwuma told the story of how his Senior brother was killed in Oputa panel. Now these people were mainly teenagers, kids when Murtala committed this genocide.
