RESUMPTION OF ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES The Students Union Government (SUG) had in a letter to the Vice Chancellor dated 11th November 2014 and copied external bodies sought to dialogue with the University Management on or before 17th November, 2014 to discuss eleven (11) demands. This letter was received by the Vice Chancellor on the 18th November, 2014. Prior to this, the Dean of Students had drawn their attention to some procedural irregularities and advised that the irregularities be corrected and re-submitted for onward transmission to the Vice Chancellor. This, they agreed to do so. Despite the above mentioned procedural irregularities, the Dean of Students, the Vice Chancellor, Management and other stakeholders (the Staff Unions) interacted with the SUG EXCO at various meetings with a view to resolving the issues but they remained adamant. The SUG EXCO mobilized students to stage a protest on the 24th November 2014 which turned violent on 25th November 2014 as a result of which University properties were damaged. The Vice Chancellor on behalf of Senate set up an Investigative Committee to investigate the causes of the demonstration and to make appropriate recommendations to avert future recurrence. The Committee was given three weeks to submit its report. The Committee requested for an extension of three weeks which was granted. The Committee submitted its report to the Vice Chancellor who forwarded it to Senate for consideration. Senate met on the 5th February 2015 and deliberated extensively on the report and directed as follows: 1.That the University properties were extensively damaged by students during the students’ unrest and they should therefore be surcharged for the damages and other costs incurred by the University and not captured in the Report of the Investigative Committee. 2.All returning students should sign an undertaking under Oath to be of good behavior during their remaining period as student of the University. 3.That all returning students must pay the sum of Twelve thousand Naira (N12,000.00) each online using the students payment system (https://mis.unijos.edu/fees)and select “Students’ Surcharges” fee item to cover cost of damages and other costs and expenses incurred by the University as a result of the demonstration. 4.That the University should reopen for academic activities on Monday 23rd February 2015. The Second Semester Examinations which was disrupted by the students’ demonstration will commence on Monday 23rd February 2015. The Hostels and Hall of residence will be opened on Saturday, February 21, 2015 for only those who have complied 5.For a student to be eligible to sit for the Second Semester Examination, he or she must present a duly completed letter of undertaking stamped by the Commissioner of Oath to be of good behavior and evidence of payment of the sum of Twelve thousand Naira (N12,000.00). 6.That a case of gross misconduct had been established against the SUG EXCO and therefore, they should appear before Senate Students Disciplinary Committee to explain their role in the students’ unrest of 24th and 25th November 2014. The Students Union Government has been dissolved and a Caretaker Committee appointed. Please download and complete the letter of undertaking format from our website www.unijos.edu.ng, and get it stamped by the court. The Oath should be submitted to your respective Faculty Officer. Once more, the School reopens February 21, 2015 and the suspended Second Semester Examinations will commence on Monday 23rd February 2015. Thank you for your strict compliance, please. 1.
