First Arik is notorious for not paying Salaries ,why is the Minister not talking about this. nobody is talking about hungry engineers and pilots .the fuel which is almost the same as your regular Kerosene is sold to Market women who troop to the Airport either late in the night or very early in the Morning (most from Ikeja Police Barrack )
No Pilot would depart with less than required fuel on board also because operational flight plans are prepared at least one hour to the flight the issue of missing fuel causing crash can not arise I BEG !!! Also if the Guage reading is in doubt there are drip sticks on the wings and belly (center tank)?where the fuel volume in the wings can be verified ..this is why Pilots report to the flight deck one hour to departure to verify all is okay
How do you siphon this fuel ? Like some one mentioned already the lowest point of the Tanks in the wings has a probe to collect settled water if this probe is left open fuel would flow
Siphoning fuel is more of an economics issue than a Safety issue for the Airline

An airliner's gauge cannot measure 6 jerry cans of fuel.

The funny thing is that 6 jerry cans of JET-A1 cannot even move a plane off the tarmac. Jet engines guzzle gallons of fuel per minute.

I'm really not bothered about guys siphoning aviation fuel from a plane. What I'm curious to know is who they sell these jerrycans to.

Does it mean some airlines could actually just buy off jet fuel from any tout at the airport and use a funnel to pour it into a plane?

I would have expected a very stringent procurement procedure for things like jet fuel considering the dangers of running an aircraft with poor quality or adulterated fuel.

1. It's not possible to sell the fuel to an airline because of the many safety on fuel contamination. Checks are been carried on every fuel used by airplanes from the source and to the end users(airline operators) and these are documented for further reference.

2. Jet A1 fuel could also be used as a kerosene. I remember back in the years, these fuel is been shared among lower staff.. mind you, the fuel shared is usually gotten from the drained fuel used for checks and since you can't return it back to the aircraft, you just share it among lower staffs.

3. I'm not partisan, But I tell you the truth, for people to stay awake untill 2:55 am(Midnight) just to siphon a couple of jerry cans of kerosene(Jet A1), I really think poverty is the drive here.

If the subsidy on kerosene is been gotten by all, no one will b a Jet A1 fuel in place of normal Kerosene..

First and foremost, I encourage not theft but can't help when I see a lot of misinformation. Now being a person who has worked with aircrafts and at the airside fuelling aircrafts I know a thing or 2. Now op your source got their aircraft registration wrong, its 5N-MJD and not MID arik has no MID in her fleet. Now the only reason these guys were caught is because they didn't play ball with Avsec and airforce team on duty, now to the people that feel airlines can buy fuel from touts, its a big nooo, there's a lot involved in jet a1 or jetfuel that most people don't know, I am confidentialy not at liberty to discuss that cos I have signed documents that means I can't say anything to that extent. Do you know jet fuel cud be used as anoda fuel we nigerians crave for? Hence ask yourself why jerricans? Trust me he wasn't stealing to fuel anoda aircraft! Cos 6 jerricas are negligible compared to what an aircraft needs to fly, they take fuel in thousands tens of thousands and some times hundred of thousands depending on destination. Ehen pls its not possible for a pilot to take an aircraft without fuel cos he has to balance his aircraft fuel load with passengers weight and luggage.

This is One of the most useless Tread on NL I have ever read what has 6 Gallons of Aviation fuel got to do with the performance of an airline
Its a normal std procedure to leak this fuel at the end of each days operation and probably this guys are taking it to there depot.
Though its a close substitute to Kerosene which can be used for domestic cooking.

Now this is exactly what i would have expected, that the siphoned fuel is sold as kerosene on the streets.... but for the aviation minister to actually day these stolen fuel is sold to 'other airlines,' that is very very disturbing.

It is either the minister is a dunce or it could be that he knows exactly what he's talking about (nothing is too strange to happen in this our Nigeria). I just hope the former is the case though.
