What is wrong with us in this Country? The worst thing is that some people actually like this comment.

I will not insult this guy (even though i think he would deserve it) because it is against my principle. Also he might genuinely be a young person who needs enlightenment.

dharay99 please note that even though Boko haram does not exist in the sea, over 90% of our national earnings come from oil in the sea. This oil is currently not properly safeguarded because the Navy does not have enough vessels to police them 247. Also kidnapping and piracy on our high seas have exceeded what it used to be on the Somalian coast. Therefore we absolutely need vessels such as these.

Politics aside, if other leaders had shown this sort of foresight, we would not be in the situation we find ourselves in the North East. Moreover bear in mind that you might ultimately thank GEJ if general Buhari wins. This is because you might just need these vessels to check mate the Ijaw boys when they rise up.

I hope this clarifies things to you.

Mumu ppl+mumu president, instead of commissioning war machines & equipment for those soldiers combating boko haram up north... Na sea equipment una dey release.

Now some mor0ns will come here praising Gej.... sad angry like boko haram now operates on d sea huh.?? undecided

SHARUPPP!!! are this warships to your eyes?...abeg go wash your eyes...

nigeria can build this typ of boots...
jonathan dont trust nigerian industries a tall.....

or else he would have buy a real WARSHIP...

everybody knows what is a warship...

then he should not call them warships.

Sorry to burst your bubble but a vessel similar to this was built in nigeria by nigerians: NNS Andoni. Right now another one is being built at the naval dockyard VI by Dormanlong Engineering, a 38m long and 7m wide vessel. Take it from a military contractor.

I was at Naval Dockyard in VI yesterday. I am aware of the commissioning of the ships. Also, I got information about the ships from a site as recorded below;

The Nigerian Navy is set to commission four newly acquired warships at the Naval Dockyard Ltd, Victoria Island, Lagos, on 19 February.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will preside over the commissioning of NNS Centenary, NNS Okpabana, NNS Prosperity and NNS Sagbama.

A statement posted on the Nigerian Navy's website read: "The acquisition is a landmark achievement for the Nigerian Navy and the federal government.

"The occasion is unique because this is the first time in the history of the Nigerian Navy that four capital warships will be commissioned at once."

The ships will enhance ongoing efforts to improve security in the nation's maritime environment and help Nigeria meet security challenges.
"This is the first time in the history of the Nigerian Navy that four capital warships will be commissioned at once."

NNS Centenary was acquired from China as part of a contract awarded by the Nigerian Navy in April 2012. A P-18N offshore patrol vessel (OPV), it was launched in Wuhan, China, in January 2014, Navy Recognition reported.

NNS Okpabana is a former US Coast Guard Hamilton-class high endurance cutter and was transferred to Nigeria in May 2014 to help combat illicit maritime activities in Nigerian waters and the Gulf of Guinea.

The third warship, NNS Prosperity, is an ex-Irish Naval Force OPV, while NNS Sagbama is a 38m-long domestically built patrol craft.

Now why is the commissioning coming at this period? for political reason or just to show how they spent the oil money. Despite increasing oil prices for so many years, Nigeria external debt increases in order to have more money in the foreign reserve to blind fold people. If you do simple arithmetic of subtracting the external debt from foreign reserve you will now know the extent of financial recklessness of the administration. IBB used increase in oil price to build roads and industries. OBJ paid debt, started most restructuring of the economy ( Petroleum, Railway, Power, Financial, etc) and left $50 billion dollar foreign reserve in addition to billion of dollar as operational/working capital for the next government from $5.5 billion foreign reserve in 1999 and huge debt which Nigeria used her money to service the interest through debt servicing yearly. Debt servicing takes some percentage of Nigeria's yearly budget until the issue of the debt was resolved.

Now, coming back to Naval ships commissioning, this is my constituency. There are classes of ships; some are Aircraft carriers, Destroyers, Frigates, Patrol craft, Mine layers etc. Nigeria has the NNS Thunder (F90) as the largest, followed by NNS Aradu (F89) I would not know the situation of Aradu for now. These are frigates. It is when I now the class of ships being commissioned that I can determine if the publicity worths it or it is just another political campaign.

The procurement of these War machines is an add to the NN. GEJ decoding and counter-attacking before the BH make their move....Have you ever asked yourself whether the BH won't start operating on H2O soon as their next plan?
Re: Commissioning Of 4 Nigerian Navy Warships By President Jonathan by Nobody: 1:33pm On Feb 19, 2015
BH can never operate at sea. That is not a familiar terrain. The sea belongs to Pirates and Niger Delta Militants for now. The Navy needs more vessels for patrol

i concur with u mr learned.wen did d oil price start fallin and wen did gej decide to make d reduction? did u find out d percentage of d global price fall compared to gej reduction in pump price? are u also aware dat gej bought one new train and commissioned it in two different states namely gombe and lagos? did u also know dat d whole aquisition process of d war ships was completed in less than four months? pls dnt make it look like it takes years to get ships but rather it is our presidents raport wit militants dat is makin it dificult for d armed forces to b armed. if u r content wit mediocrity am not.

For those of you who have been screaming about these vessels being fishing boats, consider this!!!

1. How many Navies in Africa field those larger vessels you are depicting? i.e. Frigates, Destroyers, cruisers or Aircraft carriers

2. For example, a cutting edge destroyer e.g. the US Arleigh Burke variant will set you back --- At least N400b about 50% of last year's total military budget. The new CGX cruisers planned by the US Navy would cost you about N640b each.

3. This does not consider the fact that you would then need to maintain them.

4. In deed the total budget for defence which we love to scream about i.e. about N1b last year includes Salaries, building and equipment maintenance, fueling of vehicles and assets, other over heads plus any new equipment. These salaries and other overheads make up close to 50% of the total budget.

So actually what you have left to buy equipment for the Army, Navy and Airforce is just about N500b in all. If you shared it equally, the Navy actually has only about N160b for any new equipment it wants to buy, from new uniforms, to new barracks to new ships!!!

Do you still want an aircraft carrier? Guys PLEASE lets try and be serious in our discussions!!!

Tompolo's war fleet increases by four ships.

Yes, I mean Tompolo, the Commander in charge of our maritime security.

I hope he knows how to handle these things, so he's not shooting towards Lagos when he's supposed to be firing at oil thieves on the atlantic.

Oh I forgot, the man in charge of maritime security is also in charge of syphoning the oil.
