Take a critical look at the guy in the photo below, then be honest, how does
he look to you? I said be honest. Okay, now that's more like it. If you have
never heard about Bashiru Lawrence 'Bash' Ali, then you must be below
fifteen, or you've never really lived in Nigeria. This man has been a
professional boxer- sorry , I meant international heavyweight boxer, who has
represented Nigeria on different platforms.


He had a plan, or should we say , has plans of grabbing a Guinness World
Book of Records for the oldest boxer to win a title fight. The problem now is
that he has no funds with which to host the fight (he wants it in Nigeria), and
no government either state or federal is making serious attempts to help him
achieve his goals. Last year, the news said that President GEJ actually
promised to help him secure funds for the event, while giving him a national
award in Abuja.


According to Linda Ikeji (who I think is being too humorous about this whole
issue), Bash Ali went to the bank where he was supposed to get the bills, but
slept in a police cell at the end of the day. The problem was that he caused
nuisance, but he defended himself by saying that the bank manager wanted
him to dash him money before he would release the funds GEJ promised him.


As for me, this is personal theory on why Bash Ali has not gotten the
sponsorship he craves for, might not get it, and might end up spending the
year in a cell:

#1. Bash Ali is old. Jeez , the man is 58! I seriously doubt he can take a
serious punch to his head without fainting like our beloved Samuel Peters. The
oldest man to have won a title fight is Bernard Humphrey Hopkins Jr, he was
49, and that was last year. Before Hopkins Jr won that, he had been active in
international boxing fights even at his age. Really, who can remember the last
time Bash Ali fought in a standard ring? He should take like six more years to
train for his purported fight sha, then maybe he'll be prepared.

#2. All this while, I've been typing funds, bills, sponsorship, without actually
calling the exact amount wanted. Our dear Bash Ali just wants the sum of
$30,000,000. That is, thirty million dollars, only . Please, is that not just too
much? Thirty million dollars for a boxing bout might not really be bad, but
really not now when oil prices are dropping.

#3. Even if the president actually promised Bash Ali $30,000,000, then
someone must have put extra ice on top his origin . Bash will wait for a long
time to get that cash, by the time he gets it, he would be too old to chew, talk
less of box.


Anyways, please, our police friends should help us release Bash Ali o. A
hungry man is an angry man.

Bash Ali's not too old to take a punch neither is he the oldest competitor ever.
However, if he wins he'd make it into the record books as the 'oldest boxer to win a title fight'.

In the '50s and '60s alot of boxers even older than Ali's current age were called back to pass the torch onto(or silence) the next generation of boxers at the time.

Him winning or losing a potentially boring match would mean nothing to me or average nigerians who have better things to do with their time.
