While not many are aware of it, good oral habits have more benefits that meets the eye. Apart from being able to flash an envy-worthy smile, taking care of your dental health can help keep you away from serious medical issues like Alzheimer’s, heart disease and even infertility.
While there are numerous ways to take care of your pearly whites, below are some of the basics.

1. Pay your dentist a regular visit:
A regular visit to the dentist or hygienist at least twice a year will not only keep your teeth and gums in excellent condition but will also help guarantee likely dental problems are remedied before they escalate.
Apart from oral prophylaxis, a dental professional can effortlessly assess your overall dental condition so cancers, as well as gum and other likely teeth problems are diagnosed at an early stage.

2. Brush at least twice a day:
Undoubtedly, brushing your teeth after every meal can help dramatically reduce the likely build-up of plaque that can cause tooth decay.
In line with this, it is recommended to use a toothbrush with a small head so brushing your back teeth will be much easier.
Also, thoroughly brushing for 2 to 3 minutes is deemed ideal. Moreover, refrain from using a hard bristle brush as it can wear down the enamel and expose the sensitive root area. Plus, it can also lacerate your gingival tissues.

3. Use fluoridated toothpaste:
Fluoride plays an important role in keeping your teeth healthy. In fact, most dentists would recommend using toothpaste and mouth washes that contain fluoride as it is known to help strengthen the enamel and minimize the likelihood of developing cavities.
As for young children, fluoride should not be given in excess as too much can result to white spots on the teeth.

4. Floss at least once a day:
Contrary to popular belief, brushing alone is often not enough. Understandably, there are areas in the mouth that your toothbrush alone cannot reach.

This is where flossing comes in. Keep in mind that plaque that accumulates will eventually harden and develop into tartar. In line with this, ensure to at least floss thoroughly before going to bed if flossing
after every meal would be too much trouble for you.

In addition, keep in mind that as you sleep, the production of saliva in your mouth tends to diminish thereby reducing the ability to combat bacteria so it pays to be meticulous about your oral hygiene at all times.
